"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Corky said:
guys I'm getting hardlocks because of bsods...

I've run memtest and it was green
I've run intelburntest and it was green
I've reinstalled my gpu drivers

What else could it be?

I'm thikning about reinstalling the motherboard driveres but do I have to uninstall the old one before I install the new one?

Or can I just reinstall it?
Run ORTHOS overnight (Since it tests CPU and RAM via Blend)
Run Memtest via CD for at least 2 hours.
Did you use driver sweeper when you reinstalled your video drivers?

And like kagete said do a quick run with HDTach and post the screen.
Also WD has a program that should diagnose and test your HDD. Should take ~30 minutes.

Can anyone help me with building a PC that costs around $600? it doesn't have to be top-end stuff, but to be able to run the newer games at decent framerate would be nice. I already have a 4870, so I need.. everything else :lol

Swap in budget parts as you see fit.

Probably x635, GB mobo, 4GB ram, Antec Sonata+500W, 500/1TB HDD, DVD.
Done.

Nightz

Which error code did you google? The 2nd line in my case?

Inkwell

I'm really delighted that you decided to help me by investigating, too bad you couldn't find anything :(. It is one mighty peculiar problem I'm having, as I mentioned earlier the pc hardlocked this morning when I turned it on after being off for atleast 12hours. Now I just turned off my pc after 4-5hours nonstop with DoW2 without a single hitch. Soo wierd.

Hazaro

Orthos ey? will check it out. Is there a difference between running memtest off cd or of usb? Because I ran it of my usb for 2h and the ram got a clean bill of health.
I did use driver sweeper when I reinstalled my gpu drivers ( I managed to remove some part of my mobo nforce drivers as well for some reason, had to partially reinstall the mobo chipset drivers ).

You need a quad for FF14 so get an i5-750
FF14 needs to be in fullscreen to make use of SLi, just so you know. Emu should be fine windowed on just 1 GTS 250
Get a 212+ or equivalent cooler from microcenter or amazon.
Get an antec sonata case w/ 500W instead of the OCZ.

Thanks for the response. I was contemplating the i5-750, but I thought the general consensus was higher clockspeeds were more important for wii/pcsx2 emulation so figured the dual core i5-661 would be a better choice, especially with turboboost...if you've heard otherwise, I'd definitely consider the 750. Also, I hate playing in windowed mode for games, so the fullscreen/windowed is a non-issue.

I've never had success with OCing beyond 10% of the CPU so I want to stay away from that if at all possible...

I actually have this case: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/product/chassis/fulltower/tai-chi/vb5000sna.asp and it doesn't look too bad beside my tv stand (almost perfect height match) so I cleaned it up last night and will be reusing it instead of an SFF or mid-tower case...just don't have a PSU to use on it atm.

You didn't mention that you had a case so I suggested that.
Overclocking is very dependent on CPU, if you had a pentium 4 or an old athlon you wouldn't clock very high.
Intel's Core series seems to all hit about 4Ghz+ so if you OC going dual or quad won't matter for clock speed. And when a dual core costs more than the quad... well, I'd get the quad.

This is exactly what my freezing was like. It was completely random. I could play a game for a couple of hours and have no problem, and then sometimes I would freeze within the first 5 minutes after turning on my pc. At least you're getting a bsod error though.

I'll try to help if I can, but for right now just test your system like other people have been saying. Make sure to double check the temperature of your video card(s) and cpu as well. From my pc and others that I have fixed, I do think it has something to do with the ram. Memory tests won't necessarily come up with errors if you have bad ram.

quick question,

my brother is moving to south korea in January, and he would like a desktop pc

i offered to work with him to build one, would it be a bad idea to build the computer here in the US and then ship it built to Korea, or would he be better off ordering the parts to his place in Korea once he moves there and building it himself?

any recommendations for the best way to ship a built computer to Korea if that's the route we choose? just lots of wrap and hope for the best??? :D

thanks!

great Job!! do you have the Antec 1200?

I have a corsair h50 too, did you sandwich two fans between the radiator too?

bubble wrap wont help by itself . make sure the box is bigger than the PC, if you can get something rigid like foam, use that. just something that will hold it in place, THEN, use bubble and packing peanuts. I've had an unfortunate incident. it wasn't too damaged but it was enough.

A good way to ship it is to just ship it in the box the case came in.
Ideally you'd also make sure everything is working, then uninstall the heatsink/GPU as they are heavy and can flex the board when its shipped.

In Korea the prices are probably pretty good and parts are same everywhere so that is fine too.

Finally convinced my eldest brother to get a pc/internet(only took me 10 years!:D ) and going to build him a pc.

He is eligible for the school kids discounted version of windows 7 but all the places that sell these ship as upgrades only.

Anyone know any uk website that do full versions?

Yeap, its the Antec 1200.. good eye :)

Yessir on the h50 too, I suggest anyone that has one do the same.. adding the second fan for a push/pull lowered my load temps about 5 degrees.

how did you drill in both fans? I had a hell of a lot of trouble.

Both sides of your reservoir are pre drilled, aren't they?

All I did was screw the 2nd fan on once I had the H50 mounted. Was pretty much cake.

You have your 1st fan between the case and the reservoir, right?

Okay I just installed an MSI GeForce 470GTX and performance is AWFUL. SF4 runs at like 10 FPS (which is way worse than my 8800). Splinter Cell crashes. And I'm not even sure if its running at the right clock speed. I did mess around with the clock speed settings on my previous card (8800) and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I did install the latest drivers after I plugged in the new card, but it originally had nvidia drivers installed for the 8800.

Heres some clock speed info while running SF4. Is this right?:

sf4470.jpg

edit: should I try the MSI disc's drivers?

Your GPU isn't running at max speed.

edit: I have no clue why that happens, cards tend to idle like that. I'd also like to know if you could turn it off.

Based on your post though, I'd just uninstall the drivers, run driver sweeper, then reinstall the newest drivers from nvidia.

When my GTX is overclocked way past what it can handle and starts to overheat it gets that half speed setting. Maybe you're overheating or you need to reinstall drivers and set the fan speed accordingly.

ok, so I've been here many times over the past few months and have asked about building a new desktop. well, I've decided to go with a laptop now ;x

checked out the new 11" Alienware and that looks nice, but I am well aware that they are overpriced. Does anyone have any good brands/websites that have good laptops built for gaming? I'm looking to play SC2 with high graphics settings as well as MW2.

Check the mainboard tab and see if it running at PCI-E x16.
If it isn't set your PCI-E MHz to 100 or 101 in the BIOS.

Says link width: x8, max supported: x16

I'll check the bios. Shouldn't it default to x16 or is this something that you usually have to change manually?

Okay, in terms of the power up issues, there were some screwed up settings in my bios. Thats been fixed.

But I'm still getting PXI-E showing up as 8x even when forcing it to 100/101 in the bios.

I think the card isn't going into the slot properly. The pci-e tab should push out but it doesn't. Its seated as flush as I can get it though. Any tips? This is frustrating.

Do you mean the plastic thing at the end of the pci e socket? Mine is a slider that youre able to easily slide in to lock if the card is pushed in correctly. Maybe yours isn't pushed all the way in? I still think its a heat or driver issue. Maybe your old nhancer/Afterburner/rivatuner install is trying to set your new card to some crazy high clockspeed.

I really hate to make a post for this, but I am having trouble with Fallout 3 on my computer. Previously I got 60 FPS all the time, but today the framerates were in the toilet (sub 30 even in enclosed areas). I haven't had any problems with any other game. Does anyone know where I'd begin troubleshooting? For reference, my system is a Core i5 750, 5850 and 4 gigs RAM.

I managed to get the tab to snap out. Still only 8x. Even if it was some sort of overclocking issue (I don't think so because its running at half the speed it should), the bus should still be running at 16x, no?

Oh, I had this problem quite often with an 8800GT and it recently happened with my new 460:
"Display driver nvlddmkm has stopped..." in Windows 7. I'm not sure what the issues are now, especially considering how cool the card runs.

Even at 8x your performance would should still be ok. 8 x PCI-E 2.0 is (16x)

I'd still set PCI-E to 100 or 101Mhz and see if that fixes it. If not reinstall drivers and use driver sweeper.

I figured it out, my wifi card is in the other PCI-E slot and thats what was causing it to go down to 8x.

And yeah, everything seems to run fine whether at 8x or 16x, its just SF4 thats really messed up. For whatever reason the video card doesn't kick into the highest clock speeds on that one.

Half kidding since SFIV is obviously 3D, but rivatuner should have an option to disable (and so should eVGA Precision / MSI Afterburner)

I knew you were joking about that :lol

I don't see an option in Afterburner, but I had an issue earlier where the K&L dog days demo suddenly capped at 30 FPS. I couldn't check it in time, but I think the clocks went down to 2D. I've since uninstalled rivatuner, since some supposedly had issues with it.

Guys, I'm trying to isolate the cause of my bsods and what I'm going to do today is :

This freaking stupid 470GTX does keep stepping down to 2D clocks. Even StarCraft 2 has issues. fuuuck. I can force it all day long with afterburner but it keeps resetting to the stock 2D clocks too.

This is why I hate PC gaming.

I did get SF4 running fine when I dropped down to the 197s that are on MSIs website but SC2 performance still didn't seem that great, I upgraded to some 296's and SF4 is running shitty again and SC2 runs smooth for like 2-3 minutes before going shitty.

It will work, but why would you buy an x58 setup and then get dual channel... Doesn't make sense.

No question he should have bought triple channel memory..
Triple channel offers no real world benefits.
Dual channel is the way to go since most people don't need more than 4GB.
*Oh I saw he got 8GB instead of 4GB :lol, 4GB or 6GB in triple would have been fine.

**x58 is for SLi

I've been on 185.85 for a long time, most solid drivers since 169.something

Maybe double check your connection to motherboard and that the 6 pin in plugged in snuggly.
Also what is your power supply make and wattage?

He could have gotten the triple channel 6gb kit for less that he got that dual channel kit for..

Run SiSoft Sandra and you can see the perks of triple channel. Yes I'm aware that it's synthetic.. Also I'm aware that most users today won't see much of a real world difference, especially in games.. But why pay more for something that can't perform better.. Interesting to see what the future holds.

No reason to pay more to not take advantage of a feature of a X58 board.

Need some suggestions, got a buddy who looking to buy a gaming laptop for SC2/D3. I don't know a whole lot about mobile cards so what would be a good laptop for around $800-$900ish, thanks.

Uninstall the video drivers normally. I would uninstall the PhysX drivers as well. Next you need to restart in safe mode. There are two ways. You can press and hold F8 while your computer is booting. You can also type msconfig into windows search and use that. You go to the boot tab and check off safe. Restart the computer.

Once windows boots into safe mode, open driver sweeper. You should be able to just check off NVIDIA - Display and NVIDIA - PhysX. NVIDIA - Chipset is for your motherboard, so like you said you don't want to do that. Run Driver Sweeper, and then boot into normal windows. If you went into safe mode using msconfig, you need to go back into it and uncheck "safe" under the boot tab.

That's it. Just install the new drivers.

I'll double check the connections and I'll also check the PSU model as well.

Even if theres not enough power, shouldn't it just start TDRing/freezing the system instead of stepping down to 2D Desktop mode?

One thing I noticed in CPU-Z is that theres TWO sections for 3D Application mode and one is similar to 2D Desktop settings.

I think I'm going to ghost my HDD and install a fresh win 7. If it still is screwing up I'm going to have to consider getting either a Gigabyte 470 or 460 (if power really is the issue).

Can I overclock the GPU on my laptop? I have a Studio XPS 16 with a mobility 5730 1GB. If so, how would I go about doing it? I don't know how to properly overclock (programs/procedure)

Here's a noobish question. I've built and setup my PC and would like to know if everything is running fine temperature wise. I'm concerned about the thermal paste application and want to make sure all the temperatures are alright. I've already installed SpeedFan but what's the best way to test everything and make sure the PC is in working order? I want to run it on stock settings for the first week before I attempt to overclock anything.

You could just fire up OCCT and run a basic stability test. That will lay out your temps and everything.
