"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Don't fix what's not broken. I'm using the 2009 edition and it works just dandy. No issues with it.
Is there a guide anywhere on how to use it to start OCing? I looked at the download site and couldn't really find anything to tell me step by step how to begin

Make sure your heatsink is properly seated, the processor might be going into protection mode so you don't fry it.

I recall it slipping in and clickin in properly, but you raise a good point. Will try remounting it. Thanks.

There's all kinds of guides for Rivatuner out there. With a simple google search you could've already had your graphics card OC'd :D

Still wasn't turning on. I made the mistake of buying that PSU and I think it was OEM. Dumb, dumb idea. I think this pretty much confirms my PSU was DOA. Gonna get a real one now. Fuck.

This look good?

If you have a Best Buy near you, or any PC store you might want to go and grab any compatible PSU, just to confirm that's the problem and then return it (Or if you can find a good one keep it)

Edit: That model is actually sold at Best Buy for $10 cheaper.

got my GTX460 and a Sony 32" screen

So I just installed an Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 5870 on my card. Computer never goes over 38ish dB now when gaming. loooving the silence.

Something I mean to laugh about when I got my newegg shipment, as I have never gotten such a large package from them...

Packing Peanuts? Really? You can't use those nice air bags?

Are those 4 fan controllers?
Goddam.

How well does the ATi 4870x2 stack up to the current batch of VC's? I haven't been in the game for two years.
Pretty good.

Did you try building it outside of the case yet?
Also no pics? And what brand model was the PSU?

Yea I tried everything. It was a sunbeam and OEM. Pure junk, bought the Corsair now.

ARghh, so frustrating.

The audio on my new PC stopped working after I plugged the output jack into an external receiver (was going to play some music).

I tried reinstalling the drivers and all the other troubleshooting techniques one would normally do, but to no avail.

Can doing something like this short circuit your audio device/chip?

I dunno. Do either of these help you?

Also I'd ask head-fi.org

hey guys my little brother just bought a GTX 460 but the rest of his comptuer is bottlenecking it pretty hard.

so now hes wanting to buy a new mobo + CPU + ram

anyone got a decent combo for around 300-400$ (little more if its really worth it) ? he lives in france so no need to link to good deals on newegg.com etc. just need a solid combo in that range

btw sorry for bumping old thread :[

well he'd be pretty much starting from scratch wouldn't he? He's basically got a GTX 460 and now he wants to build a computer around it (Motherboard+CPU+RAM)

anyway right now hes on

Motherboard: Asus P5QL Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q 8200 @ 2.33 Ghz
RAM: Kingston DDR2-800 2GB Memory
and the GTX 460

Has he tried seeing how much he can overclock that CPU? It seems like another 2GB of RAM and an overclock would do wonders for his current system.

I bit the bullet and bought a Gaming Laptop.

Never bought one before, but I'm going to be travelling soon and don't trust a PC in luggage, and really wanted a PC to game on as I haven't had one for 3-4 years (and even then it couldn't run anything very well).

I got the Asus G73JH, but I got the cheap refurb from Best Buy's refurb site. It's currently listed for $899($1299 on BB's website) so I couldn't pass it up.

http://www.cowboom.com/store/productDetails.cfm?contentID=713868

I'll post some pictures of it when it arrives and stuff like that. I also purchased an SSD which I'm going to use as the main drive, and put the HDD that comes with the computer in the secondary HDD slot and use it for storage. Will see how well conditioned the refurb comes in the mail as well.

it is overclocked, still doesn't run very good (which is strange to me, especially when it is Starcraft 2 on medium settings).. i also tried putting more RAM in it, but it won't boot up (tried all combinations)

Looks like fun, but I would remove each and every light possible out of that whole setup, and the window too. I hate those things to the max. Especially annoying when watching a movie in a dark room.

really? my next upgrade is to add some more red lights to the bottom :D

Aloha, looking to upgrade to a quad core, I will be doing 3D and 2D videowork. Including rendering. I'd like something that will perform well but isn't super cutting edge.

Any variety of good suggestions would be appreciated and then I'll let you know what sort of ballpark I'm in price wise. Currently on an Asus P5K-e wireless motherboard. 775 P35 chipset.

I have the same CPU and i think that 2.33 is the stock speed.

lovely looking setup but I wonder, are you running your screen in low res for any reason?

i think i put it at 3.00

Are you sure? You had the FSB upped from 333 to 429? That's a pretty hefty o/c. Especially for the RAM unless it's RAM that's built for overclocking.

I'm assuming the newegg info is correct and the multiplier on that chip maxes out at 7.

Asking 860 from 800 chips isn't asking that much imo.

Any suggestions on a different board? Preferably one that has built in wifi but still has the ability to run without a GPU. I'm also trying to cut my costs down to just over $500, so I could use some other suggestions as well. I'd need to get everything off of Newegg. Halp?
Didn't you ask for help like 2 months ago?

iirc I suggested a cheap AM3 mobo with onboard HDMI + an AMD x2 250
SSD super overkill, get a 500GB drive like a Samsung F3.
Only need 2GB of RAM, get the lowest speed you can
Can get a cheaper case

That's like $300 saved.

Maybe I've been out of the loop too long:) I always associate Kingston with the low rent sticks you see in Best Buy.
They are better than that for sure.

HDTV is my guess.

Going to be doing a modded MATX build for someone using a Coolermaster 342 case. Will have a 1055T, 4 gigs of ram, four HDD's in Raid 0, 5870 and various other goodies. Going to be a beast for a small machine. I will post a worklog when I start.

I think it was a few weeks ago but yeah. I don't want to go the AMD route though, just on personal preferences and past experiences.

Why? There's nothing wrong with AMD. And if you're looking to save money, you won't find it going the intel route.

Are there any good/trustworthy websites that will give you cash for an old laptop? I have an HP DV9910US laptop thats pretty much worthless to me now that I have a capable desktop and a smart phone. Its in a good condition other than a slightly warped keyboard because I dropped it once.

Is it worth it to to get an AMD II X4 Phenom instead of an AMD II X4 Athlon?

I'm trying to build a budget PC for more or less $600 and was wondering if the extra $40 would be worth it?

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/122?vs=80

I'm guessing you are talking about the 635 vs 940 or 945 instead of the 955 BE (Unlocked multi)
so I'd say no it isn't. Both will cap out at around 3.4-3.5Ghz on average. The BE can get a bit higher.

my GPU keeps going into 3D clocks while on the desktop/browser. Its usually like 5 seconds then back to 2D clocks for a good time but its slowly raising the heat.

Any idea what could cause it? It only seemed to start happening after the latest Nvidia drivers or shortly after.

I'm looking into building myself a gaming rig. (I haven't really had one since 2004) This is what I've got so far.

compparts.jpg

I'm hoping to cut costs where I can. I have an old case I'm hoping to fit it all into. Also I have some parts left over from my recently fried tower that I may be able to reuse. (I hope) Like a wireless card, dvd drive, and maybe my old hard drive.

^ ^ ^

Why go with such a old socket? seems like a waste of money, Also Triple channel. that board is only dual channel.

With what your spending you should do a i5 build.

Edit: You are essentially buying a outdated MB and CPU there when you can go down to 4 gigs of ram saving $50 and use that to pretty much have enough for an i5 and the MB needed.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215&cm_re=i5-_-19-115-215-_-Product

1156 socket MB's

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ESTMATCH&Description=Motherboard+1156&x=0&y=0

So what are the parts on the $600 build? Two of the combo deals are gone and they don't show up.

Have been out of the PC hardware loop for too long to go picking random parts, so need a guide for one at about $500-$600.
