Can I push it to 4-4.3GHz with good fan?
Looks nice, just know that the mobo does not have SATA 6gbps on it. So if you get an SSD later you might not be getting all you can out of it for read speed.Soulstar said:Looking at a getting a new mobo and cpu and I stumbled on this combo

It's an i5-760 and Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 for $294 plus a 10% discount on top of that for the mobo.
What does PC-GAF think?

I bought my current laptop in June '09, It came with Vista HP x64 FR pre-installed, and a "Recovery DVD-ROM" with 11 "supported languages", including English, that "may only be used for backup and recovery of [my] computer system."
When October and W7 rolled around, I received a W7 HP x64 FR upgrade DVD, and then last June I got a W7 Pro x64 FR upgrade DVD (free through my school).
Unfortunately, my current HDD is dying, and I intend to switch it with an SSD this month, how am I supposed to go through installing Windows on this new drive? None of the DVDs I have are full Windows installs, they're either Recovery or Upgrade DVDs, is that enough?
With what I have, will it be possible to install W7 Pro in English? Can I install it in English this time around (ie, does the fact that English is a "supported language" for my Vista recovery disk mean I can install Vista in English, or that the recovery disk works with English versions of Vista?) ?
I'm a bit lost.. thanks for all the help you guys can give me =)
How does that pc handle other games? Pretty much what I will end up with next week.rexor0717 said:Is Civ 5 ridiculously graphically intensive? I can't even run something on high! I just built this computer yesterday. I have an i5 760 and a gtx460 but its still really laggy. Whats the deal?

Been hammering at my cpu OC now for a day. Been going to lower and lower voltages and on the other hand going higher on the baseclock.
currently it looks like :
20x 190mhz @ 3800mhz
vcore : 1.27 in bios, 1.2v showing in cpu-z during full load in prime95.
maxtemperatures across the cores are 67-65-64-65 C

The idea is that fan on the psu will bring in fresh air from outside the case, not the hot air from your graphics card.
Fairly common for bottom mounted PSU cases actually, but I have a feeling the one pictured is an Antec 300 which doesn't.valenti said:...Ever bought a case where there was a hole on the bottom?

Its been playing everything else quite nicely. I can run SC2 on ultra with a nice frame rate.Varna said:How does that pc handle other games? Pretty much what I will end up with next week.
Right now only the $150+ SSDs like the C300 can hit that 300MB/s readspeed, but that pricing should come down in time. SATA 3 performs just fine, just something to be aware of.Soulstar said:Thanks for the info.
I was wondering what I would lose for the SATA 6gbps... I don't really think I will be able to justify buying an SSD anytime soon so I think I will be okay. Definitely going to think about it for a bit before biting.
So first off I'm going to suggest budget cuts:Kaako said:Woohoo! For real? I was gonna go with this just to be safe:

Cause wanna overclock the hell out of it but do you think that's overkill?
Another option would be the Hydro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010
Edit: Also going with a HAF 932 case.
MSI Big Bang Motherboard.
Corsair 950TX. Contemplating if I should go with the 1000w cause the mobo has 2 8-pin cpu connectors that only the 1000w+ have. Then again, don't know if I really need it. Should be fine with one for 4GHz OC right?
I don't, but the Kingston value SSD's are great at the 30/32/40GB price points.MagniHarvald said:The SSD I'm looking at is the Corsair Force 40 Go, any of you guys had any experience with it? Worth the 130?
Yup, I was definitely thinking of SLI but perhaps not dual 480s. Instead I was gonna go with a pair of 460s for now or the 5850s/5870s if I can find a good deal. I'd be upgrading GPUs later down the line. When are they announcing/showing off the new GPUs again?Hazaro said:So first off I'm going to suggest budget cuts:
Hyper 212+, Vendetta II, Scythe Mugen II, N520 for cooler
i5, a nice $130 board, HAF 912/922.
That nets you 90% of the same power for $300 less. i7 right now is just not a great buy since Sandy Bridge and AM3+ are coming up. The premium associated with the socket needing full bandwidth on 3 PCI-E lanes, and all the extra just isn't worth it. I'm assuming if you are getting that kind of rig you want dual GTX480's or something?
THAT SAID if you still want to go for i7 then the parts themselves are fine.
That Corsair 950W is more than enough, not a bad price on it.
Not really.Kaako said:I still like the i7 over i5 for some reason. I just think I can get more out of the i7 in the overclocking/performance department, no?
460 newer, less power, smaller. Very similar speeds.kevm3 said:What is the difference between the 460 and the 465? And what is the best bang for the buck card at the $200 to $300 price range?

Anybody have experience with ASUS monitors?
Also, is HDMI input now the preferred way for monitor connections?
Hazaro said:Looks fine. I'm not a big monitor person so I usually check newegg review numbers, then type that model into a real review site.
Also check to see if that is the current updated model.
That ASUS looks fine, might be able to find a cheaper 23/4" though.
HDMI is same as DVI but can carry sound, I just like the smaller cable.
myself said:Oh WOW, I remember reading a review that the AC MX-2 was better than the popular AS5, but what's this about the MX-3 and MX-4?! They actually update their formula?n0n44m said:that's true but given the huge size of the Cell/GPU chips and the ease with which you can spread out AS5 anyone who isn't a Parkinson's patient should have no issue applying it properly
I used Arctic Cooling MX3 which is slightly better, but it's a total bitch to apply/spread ... for PS3 I'd recommend Arctic Cooling MX2 or the new MX4 both of which are much more easy to spread (AS5 is still absolutely fine if you have that lying around, no need to buy new paste!)
Know where I can buy this stuff and find reviews? NewEgg doesn't carry the 3 and 4.

Im currently looking to upgrade my PC. Im running a 9600GT overclocked, and a 2.8ghz AMD Athlon x2. Ive also got 4GB 800mhz ram in the thing.
Now, I want to eventually upgrade both the processor and the GPU, but right now I can only do one de to various financial constraints.
The choice is;
CPU - AMD Quad Core Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz @ approx £110.00
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/components/processors/amdphenomx4/amd/hdz955fbgmbox.html
OR
GPU - Novatech ATI Radeon 5770 1024MB GDDR5, also @ approx £110.00
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/components/atiradeongraphicscards/atihd5700series/novatech/57701gb.html
I understand that either way its going to be bottlenecked performance until I can get both sorted, but which does GAF think is going to give the best performance increase in the meantime?

I know the paste supplied with the 212 is solid (which I'll be getting), but I'd still rather get a 3rd party thermal paste that I know will be better at doing it's job for the cpu and gpu. I know the difference is small, but for the price, I'll be a little anal about it.n0n44m said:http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/main.php?cPath=39
MX-2 was slightly better than AS5 and is non-conductive
MX-3 improves on 2 but is a bitch to spread, so only put a drop on the cpu and use the heatsink to spread
MX-4 has just been introduced, basically MX-3 like performance with MX-2 like spreadability
I doubt you'll see more than 3 to 4 degrees improvement over AS5 though, but given the availability (in Europe) and the fact that it hardly needs any cure time (unlike AS5) I'd recommend MX-2 or MX-4 if you are purchasing new paste ...
for anyone in this thread who just wants to build a pc for their own, just use the paste supplied with the heatsink (Mugen2, Hyper212, whatever heatsinks are adviced here)

While we're on the topic of thermal paste, what's the best method for application for i7 chips? Some use the line (vertical or horizontal?), the dot in the middle, the spread, etc.
