That's far from saying that the x4 and x6's are bad. But, for what you are looking at the i5 does everything better.

As for Arma II, a beefy CPU and a beefier GPU. That games eats all the power you throw at it.

I would assume the X6 would be ideal for games like Civ5 which runs like absolute dog turd normally, but I can't find any benchmarks for it.
 
I never really notice the cases that these cards come in, usually its just a boring box with some oddball picture on it but, the case for the GTX460Amp actually looks nice and actually has some nice inner packaging. I was quite surprised and impressed for a total of 2 minutes. I also had no idea this card came with POP: The Forgotten Sands. Not a bad deal for $208. I suppose I could have just upgraded with ATI but, that damn Viewport 2.0 in Maya...

- Motherboard: I have searched up and down on Newegg and checked reviews, but from the looks of it, Mobo is the item in a computer that seems most complicated. Most of the boards I have seen are either ultra simple Mini-ATX boards, or just high performance overclocking crazy boards. I was looking at the Rampage III, but I dont understand half of that stuff.
I just need a standard ATX board in good quality, that is reliable and can house 2 big Nvidia GPUs(in SLI) and a sound card(PCI slot).

6 GB Sata, and USB 3 would be nice too! I guess I am limited 1366 Boards with my CPU! I understand they cost more, but so be it. I would like a newbie friendly one. I don't even know how/were to put in all the pins to LED, Reset and power.
But I would like one that is just solid, fast, but without being designed for the 1337 OC gamer!!!111111

- Ram: I find, finding Ram difficult as I dont know which Mobo to get, but I am hearing that its best now to get 6GB in Tri. So a Mobo with 3 Ram slots would be fine, but if it had 6, I could double up later to 12 GB ram and directly skip 8! And at what speed? If you have 2000 MHz ram do they need one of those crazy Ram coolers?





Lastly; What do you guys think? Could I put this together? I've been told that SLI is not as scary and difficult as it used to be! I am worried though. What's the Bridge thing? It looks like a little label of plastic you put between each card, to make a little spagetti bridge?
Also the CPU - Does it come with thermal paste for first use? Can I just put the cpu cooler on, without also buying grease and all that?

Also do you think the R3, since it's a midi tower, can cool all these components efficently? It comes with 2 coolers(review here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/2010/10/29/fractal-design-define-r3-review/1 ) and I am adding 5 more! It should be okay, shouldnt it? I mean, if I 6 intake coolers, with one rear as exhaust, it should be okay, since I am on Stock, right?


I really need your help guys on this one before I dive in, along with buying the Dell u2711... I estimate it will be around 4000 USD with the monitor! European, and Scandinavian prices are crazy compared to US. I am getting quite the deal on a lot of these components, like the 470's and the 950 i7!

Might want to consider switching to a single GTX 580 now its out and benchmarks well.

Judging by the card he linked, I think he now meant that each GTX 470 was $300, bringing the total to $600...more expensive than a GTX 580. I definitely wouldn't recommend that over a GTX 580. You do get more performance, but you also get a ton more power draw and heat, a long with possible SLI headaches.
 
Thanks for the case fan suggestions guys. I ended up going with 1 Noctua NF-P12 120 mm and 2 Noctua NF-R8 80 mm. Thank goodness I bothered to look elsewhere on pricing, after putting them in the Newegg cart. I ended up saving myself 20 bucks with lower prices and free shipping.

Take a look at the +12V rail, -5V rail, etc.. I have a hard time believing this is accurate considering my PC actually functions and doesn't seem flakey (unless I try to overclock the GTX460 at all, which admittedly could be a sign). I'm going to grab a multimeter tomorrow to check it outside of monitoring software, but that just seems too low to be true.

Checking the +12V rail voltage in the BIOS says it's around 12.23V, so that seems right, I can't imagine something is happening when I boot into Windows that would be pulling it down like that. Anyone have any experience with this? I just noticed it, so I can't be sure if it's been like this the whole month or so I've had the PC up and running.

HWM has some wonky readings sometimes and it doesn't play nice with certain components.

Looks like it's just reporting in the incorrect field. Try seeing what SpeedFan says.

I'm not sure if you remember some of my replies about that case/PSU/component combo. Have you searched online for reviews of the case, or the PSU itself?

A quick look reveals:
Allied SL-275TFX
Efficiency > = 65%

Not exactly confidence inspiring in this day and age and that's before you factor in a 1 year warranty.

Unless it's a really bad no name PSU, 275W is definitely enough for this kind of setup. CPU is like 125W under full load, GPU is ~20W, SSD ~5. So there is lots of room for anything the chipset etc. draw.

Edit: Oh well, apparently it is indeed bad ^^
 
275W is more than enough to push that system. That being said that PSU looks like garbage and I doubt you`d actually get 275W from it.

Or is it likely the PSU isn't removable from the case?

Edit: Or a case that looks similar (IE doors to cover where the disk drive would be. Very simple) and isn't really expensive :lol

All of this shit for my new rig is going to come today... Except for my GTX 460. I'm probably going to want to start playing today but I only have my old ATI 4670. Will putting my old videocard in for now cause any compatibility issues later when my GTX 460 eventually does come on Friday?

I plan on getting a Corsair 800d and A5's once I get a bigger desk. I also curretly use a 32 Sony HDTV as my monitor.

Everything looks good, except for the videocard. Replace that with a similarly cheap GTX 460 768mb.
 
Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade my GPU this year, and what I've got now is a Phenom II X4 955 with an 8800GTS 512, and I'm eyeing both the HD6870 and maybe the GTX 470.

I game at a res. of 2048x1152 and I don't usually use AA except on older games. Which one would you recommend and which brand? eVGA for NVIDIA and Asus or Gigabyte for AMD?

I prefer Gigabyte and MSI for either brand, as long ad they have one of REIT custom coolers. Big improvement over the stock coolers. Lifetime warranty is not worth going evga, IMO, unless you plan on reselling the card.

6870 and GTX 470 are good choices. Make sure you get something better than stock cooling for the GTX 470.

Since I don't buy aftermarket coolers for my GPUs, and I won't wait for non-reference 6870s, I'll probably just get the Gigabyte HD6870.

Gigabyte and MSI have nice non reference coolers for the GTX 470 if you were still considering it. I'm not sure if the $300 price tag is warranted though.

Also, all the reviews I've read on the 68xx series has pretty much every synthetic and game score higher than a GTX 470. Only reason I was considering the green team was because I've had an NVIDIA card for quite a while, and the performance delta is fairly negligible. However. temps and noise are a 'groß' difference.

So I ordered a C300 SSD despite saying I didn't need one 2 weeks ago. I will be back to complain if I'm not pleased with the performance boost :lol

actually my expectations are pretty reasonable-- if character models load faster in FF14 I'll be happy

If faster load times in games is your sole motivation for the upgrade, you'll probably be disappointed. Games load faster, sure, but not enough to justify the price. The justification is in bootup/shutdown times, application launching, not needing to defrag and not having to hear your hard drive every time the head moves.

It really depends on how the game is coded. Some games load times are cut in half while other do not notice much difference at all. SSDs also have shown to improve framerate averages and minimums too. I wish I had enough wealth to justify buying a C300 but at the moment I'm a HDD schmuck.

You summed up the benefits of SSD perfectly. I just built an awesome computer for my cousin, and was shocked and annoyed at how loud his HDD was. I've really been enjoying the silence of my SSD.

A friend of mine bought a 128GB Corsair Sandforce SSD and is amazed at the boot times.

Yeah, i cannot stand 7200rpm drives anymore. Only SSDs and 5400rpm "Green" drives for me.

Hell I've got 4 WD Green drives in one of my machines in a RAID and they're still quieter than an average 7200rpm drive.
 
Has anyone ever had issues rebooting when a phone is connected to the computer (charging via usb). I rebooted my computer to finish installing something today and when it rebooted it didn't recognize my hard drive, saying to insert a cd to boot or something. I thought my HDD had died :D I ran the repair thing on the windows cd and it told me to unplug my phone, I did and it booted fine.

Is this normal?

BIOS could be set to boot from USB device for some reason. Go to BIOS and change the boot order to say C drive first.

Maybe you have boot from usb enabled in the bios and it was trying and failing to find something to boot from on there, then not falling back to other options (hdd etc)?

Some issues do happen when certain USB devices are connected, so its not uncommon.
 
What are the signs of a dying video gard? I have a MSI GTX 460 1gb


My video card was running fine for a week on the latest Nvidia drivers then all of sudden while surfing the web my desktop starts to artifact like crazy, lots of glitches, boxes, etc. I restarted and thought it went away but when I went to watch a video file or even a youtube vid, it bugged out again. Starcraft crashes as well.

I checked the MSI Afterburner tool and it said it was idling at 39c, which I assume to be within normal operating temps.

I'm going to open it up today to reseat it and check for dust and also try to install older drivers. Should I call it quits after that and RMA it?

I had similar issues with my GTX 460 (artifacting, game crashes) and it was a bad card. I had just buiilt the PC so I am RMAd it and the new card is working fine.

It could be the card, or it could be driver issues. Do a search on those drivers and artifacting. Revert to the old drivers and see if it fixes it.

Haha, I know a few UPS guys.
It's hell this time of year, regardless, but honestly, that box wouldn't be more than 30 pounds or so. Which is light.

Also, the 6870s are pretty awesome, hope you enjoy it. I know I'll enjoy my 6850, especially considering I'm upgrading from a 3100 (mobile).
 
Just got myself a Geforce GTX 460 1 GB today (EVGA) and overclocked it. It's screaming fast. My Geforce GT 250 1 GB had a fan start going bad (was making a grinding sound) and I didn't feel like disassembling it, so I decided to just buy a new card.

Also, I've got another 4 Gb of DDR3 on the way, so I'll be running 8 Gb here soon along with my AMD 955 Black Edition processor.

Computer is pretty beefy now.

I hear that there are some negatives with running RAM with all DIMMs filled. Not sure what it is, but it's what I heard. : /

It runs the NB a bit harder. Can slightly limit your overclock / need more voltage.

I actually need the extra RAM for work, and there's no real negatives that I've heard of other then that it's application specific where you'll see any actual "speed up".

The reason I upgraded my RAM was because my work involves me using a ticket system written in ajax and it is a fucking memory hog. I'll have tabs crashing in chrome because they're using 700 - 900 mb of memory EACH (and I'll sometimes have up to 5 tabs open).

So, 4 Gb really isn't enough to deal with this POS software I have to use.
