Get a 570 and cut your losses by selling the 4870x2

570 is only really for between 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 but you shouldn't get anything more for single monitor gaming.

I have some leftovers from my old PC (Phenom II X4 920 2.8, motherboard and RAM) and I'm thinking about building a second PC for LAN. It needs to run BF3 at 1360*768 on high-medium. What card (and PSU) should I buy?

GTX 560 Ti / 6950 with a decent ~500w PSU.

I probably wouldn't go higher than a GTX 460. A decent 400+ watt PSU should do, something like a Corsair CX430 would be fine.

Either a 560 ti or an HD6950 would be a good bump up in that price range. On sale, you should be able to find either around the $200 mark.

Make sure they fit in your case/your PSU has the proper connections, etc.

Thanks, just to give myself some breathing space I'm thinking of getting GTX460, it's a bit cheaper, probably less power-hungry.

Heh, I always recommend Corsair now just because of cable length.

I was surprised by just how short the cables on my Seasonic 620W M12 were. Is Seasonic equally cheap with the cables on their X series as well?

Pretty sure mine are fine. Don't remember trouble.

For a long time a lot of PSU makers had their mobo power reach by 2mm or something ridiculous.

Thought I'd share some pics of my build. I really like a 650 case. Lovely.

any suggestions as to why when I turn on my computer sometimes it immediately shuts down and then turns on by itself a second or two later and keeps going normally?

you got an asus p67 mobo?

I'm really trying to decide if I want build a completely new computer in November (after Black Friday sales) or if I should wait until Ivy Bridge.

Does anyone know if you'll need a new socket of motherboard to run ivy bridge-enabled CPUs? If not, will they not perform as well as newer motherboards designed with ivy bridge in mind? I understand you'd need a new one for PCI-E 3.0, but yeah.

I always freakin' find myself a generation behind in computer hardware, and I want that to stop, so I feel if I upgrade before ivy, I'll just be behind again...

Correct me if I'm wrong but can I still pair an nvidia card with my 6970 for physx enabled games like Alice and the new Batman game? If so, what's the most cost effective nvidia card to use so I can still get my games running at 60fps? I tried enabling physx with Arkham Asylum and the fps hit was horrible for a bunch of scattered paper lol

Also, when a dedicated card is being used for physx, does it draw less power as compared to when using the card as a GPU? Just wondering if my psu (HEC 700w) will be able to handle it if I needed a high end physx card (which hopefully isn't the case)

Does GAF have a miracle solution to this incessant problem I keep having?

What happens is that at any random time, my taskbar previews start flickering, as does my alt tab window. This means I have to use the task manager to switch between multiple windows in applications such as Firefox.

Another thing this does is mess up my music player, Foobar2000--if I click on anything at all it will change tracks, so playing music on it becomes impossible.

I've googled this multiple times and while others have had this issue, I have yet to find any clear way to solve it.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit, an MSI GTX 580 Lightning and have a Asus P8Z68-V PRO MB.

Just curious as to why I need another graphics card for PhysX if I get the GTX 570. What about max settings with AA?

Edit: Why do some people get graphics cards like the EVGA GeForce? Better cooling?

1. You wouldnt/dont need another Graphics card for PhysX with Batman AC.
A GTX 570 will run Batman AC on Max, with Tesselation and PhysX on high, dont bother with a PhysX deciated card, its a waste of money.....unless the dedicated card is another GTX570, which you can use in SLI for every other game that doesnt use PhysX.

If you use a dedicated card that is sufficiently weaker/slower than your primary card, you will actually see a decrease in performance as the dedi card struggles to push out the PhysX calculations quickly enough.

2. People have favorite brands for multiple reasons e.g Custom Coolers, Factory Overclocks, Golden Samples, Warranties, Better Fans/Waterblock, Goodies/Games...etc...etc

So what is best and cheapest nvidia card to use as a dedicated PhysX processor?

Edit: to work with GTX 570.

If you are running a GTX570 as your main card the cheapest truly beneficial card would be the GTS450 or GTX260, second hand GTX260s cost about the same as a brand new GTS450.
I personally wouldnt get a dedicated PhysX card (unless it was another GTX570) for the reasons stated above.

There are rumors about Ivy Bridge not working on current boards due to chipset or UEFI /BIOS issues. But it is possible for them to be resolved if the rumors are true because it will still use Socket 1155. Ivy Bridge won't be out for quite some time. You'll probably have to wait a year or so. Technology always moves fast, so you can never always be up to date with the latest stuff. I would suggest getting a Z68 board depending on your setup currently or you can always go with SB-E if you are willing to spend a great deal when it comes out.

I'm having problems finding a good monitor. I just bought a Dell Ultrasharp (U2412M) and while the monitor is awesome I've having some backlight bleeding from the four corners. Enough that it's a bit annoying (especially considering the price of it). Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for clearing that up.

By AA I meant Anti-Aliasing. I don't know much about it but I always had problems with AA on my laptop.

What about BF3? Will the GTX570 do a good job without a dedicated PhysX processor?

Hey guys, just have a quick question. My friend has a PC that he bought at a store. It's a regular PC nothing fancy, dedicated graphics. His power supply I think is only 300watts so I was wondering if there is a low end graphics card that he could get that would run on that and let him play some pc games, even if on the lowest settings. Anything better than integrated.

Well its gonna be my birthday soon and I got spare money to upgrade my PC with. I played the BF3 beta and was geting med-high on my PC with always higher than 30FPS and I wanna play it even better than that. This is what I have now:

AMD X4 955 BE (I'm not sure if upgrading this is really necessary)

4GB RAM DDR3 (want to upgrade to 6 gigs and I did diagnostic tests and found out that my memory was corrupted so I may need to replace some sticks)

MSI Cyclone GTX 460 1GB (strongly considering an upgrde to the gtx 570)

Also im planning to add an extra cooling system and an anti-dust filtration system (if those exist) in my desktop. Are these good upgrades? What PSU would I need to keep this stable? I think my current one is a 650W.

Also keep in mind that I dont' have an SLI capable motherboard so I can't SLI. :(

Your psu should be fine. I have a 620W psu, and 8 gigs of ram and a gtx 570

Your computer should be performing better than that - try new memory if you're saying that they fail diagnostics. RAM is cheap these days anyway.

if I was going to upgrade my 5850, what would be the next best logical jump?

GTX 570 or 6970 at a minimum. You also want to look at a GTX 580.

The 5850 is still a pretty fast card, and upgrading to something significantly better isn't all that cheap.

perfrel_1920.gif

Just to rate the cost effectiveness of each upgrade:

GTX 570: $315 for 29% performance increase -> $10.86 per percent

6970 : $310 for 31.5% performance increase -> $9.84 per percent

GTX 580 : $430 for 48.7% performance increase -> $8.82 per percent

The GTX 580 is your best buy. Also consider it comes with Arkham City. The one I linked also comes with an Accelero Xtreme Plus on it, which is a damned good cooler if you have a case with good airflow. If not, you'll want to look at a stock GTX 580.

Otherwise, hold on and wait for another generation of cards before you upgrade.

Okay guys, I'm looking to build a new PC within the next 2-3 weeks. I'm a heavy user of Photoshop, Painter, Zbrush and so on but I also enjoy games. I taddle in a bit of WoW, and I'm looking into Skyrim and BF3 on PC, also.

I once bought a PC to my specifications and modified it later but that is as far as my 'building' experience goes. I'm not so concerned about building the PC on my own as there are guides but I'm not sure about compatibility and voltages. So, GAF, please assist!

These are the specs I'm currently looking at, if there are any problems please let me know.

Overclock: Maybe

CPU: Intel i5 2500k
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V-LE
Memory: G.Skill 1600mhz 4GB*2 (8gb)
HD: WD Black 1TB
SSD: Intel 510 series 120gb
GPU: ASUS Nvidia GTX 580 Direct CU II
PSU: Corsair AX650 (is this enough? - I honestly have no idea about PSU's)
Case: Fractal Design Define R3 Black USB 3.0
Cooling options: Noctua NH-D14

Misc:
Monitor: ASUS VS248H 24"

Cheers GAF!

I have one and I probably won't upgrade until the 8000/9000 series depending on when they fall. Or the Nvidia equivalent, but they're skipping around on numbering so I don't know where they'll be then.

Can anybody tell me why my PC freezes randomly when I use google chrome? I even did a fresh OS install, and still the same shit.

There is another option as well. I can buy a new motherboard that has SLI (I think I made a big mistake buying a mobo without SLI) and then buy another GTX 460 1gb Cyclone and SLI them together. What sort of performance will that give me?

Your PC freezes or google chrome crashes? I had an issue with chrome just crashing on me for no reason. Try doing a memory diagnostic. For me it was faulty memory.

Well, first Chrome freeze, then my PC will freeze, but then unfreeze like a minute or two. Yea, I'm thinking my memory is crap.

I wouldn't buy a new mobo just to be able to SLI old cards personally.

One last question. How well would the $900 build do with Dolphin emulation? I've got a few Wii games I really want to play, but the lack of HD on the Wii makes them nearly unbearable to look at when playing Wii. My laptop is not nearly good enough good enough to play them (but it plays Gamecube games okay).

Theoretically perfectly.
Depending on the game 100% should be easy to achieve at 1080.

2700K is really unnecessary. Same amount of cache as 2600K, which already overclocks easily to 4.3 GHz on air, beyond 4.5 GHz on air with careful settings and ventilation.

I'm ready for Ivy bridge to be released, be underwhelming, so Intel can go ahead and prepare for their next tick cycle.

Very well if you overclock it (hell, Sandy Bridge is probably the best set of processors for Dolphin/PCSX2 at this point). You can hit ~4.5GHz easily with the cooler listed with the $900 build in the OP.

Okay, I need some help. My EVGA 8800 GT 512MB just died (artifacts all over the screen and computer freezes when loading windows). My processor an intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale that runs at 3.0GHz. I am wondering what is the best video card my CPU can handle?

I'd say something along the lines of a gtx 460 to AMD 6850.

Overclock that processor too if you can.

Everything looks fine. The Corsair power supply has enough to handle your system.
