Is it safe to set the timings below the RAM specifications?

I was installing Windows fine when I noticed that the motherboard's Auto settings set it to something like 7-8-7-1N when the Gskill Sniper's specifications are 9-9-9-2N. I manually set it to the latter just in case it's bad.

You will barely notice any speed difference by running ram faster than it's timing, but you could run into stability issues if you did. Thus, it's better to stick to the ram's specs.

Is there another way to test OC stability quicker than Prime95? Waiting for a crash to either up the voltage takes too long.
Do at least 20 passes of LinX, 50 if you want to be thorough. 20 should be plenty for a quick test. 30 min of LinX is usually enough, compared to 60 min for P95.

Hey guys, just have a quick question. My friend has a PC that he bought at a store. It's a regular PC nothing fancy, dedicated graphics. His power supply I think is only 300watts so I was wondering if there is a low end graphics card that he could get that would run on that and let him play some pc games, even if on the lowest settings. Anything better than integrated.
Radeon 6670 is the best solution for PCs with low power PSUs.

I'm looking into buying a new PC, mostly for gaming and picture/video editing (lightroom and premiere), so I need a little help as I know nothing about building PC's that will do good with modern stuff.

CPU: Intel i7 2600K
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67-M Pro
Memory: 1600Mhz 2x4GB G.Skill
HD: Samsung 1TB 7200RPM 32MB, SATA II HD103SJ
GPU: ASUS nVidia GTX570 DCII 1280MB
PSU: Chieftec 650W
Case: Thermaltake V4 + Thermaltake 230mm Blue LED Slient Fan AF0047

Should this run heavier stuff okay? what should I change or add?

Throw in a Hyper 212+.

Otherwise, you probably aren't looking into overclocking, so you can just drop the motherboard down to an H61/67.

Since you're doing gaming and video editing, you may want to consider going 2TB.

Actually, if he's going to be doing a lot of video editing/encoding related work shouldn't he be considering moving up to a Z board as opposed to dropping to the H?

What does it mean when once in a great while on cold startup, my computer makes like a long continuous beep sound that doesn't seem to end? Or maybe it's an electronic noise thing? It's low in pitch and doesn't sound like it normally does when it beeps for POST.

In fact I heard it beep once saying everything's fine for post while that long beep kept going and going...

Eventually it stopped but I have no idea what it was.

I forgot about QuickSync. Yeah, keep it at P67.

I've got a four year old PC that I'm thinking about either upgrading or replacing for Skyrim next month. Here are the specs:

E6750 Conroe Core2Duo 2.66GHz
ASUS P5K-E motherboard
MSI NX8800GT 512MB Nvidia video
4GB RAM
OCZ600SXS 600W power supply

I had it overclocked some but became unstable about half a year ago, so I brought it back down to default settings. It now has an issue where every great now and then it won't boot up properly, I get no video at all and the PC lets out 3 speaker beeps at boot up. Plus the occasional random lockup. I think the video card is acting up, but it happens very infrequently and when it does I just let it sit for awhile or play with powering up and down and eventually it boots up just fine. More of a random infrequent inconvenience than a serious problem I guess.

Other than that it's running Win7 with no problems at all. The newest games I play on it are Oblivion, Minecraft, Civ5, Microsoft FSX flight sim, and Starcraft II, and it runs all of them just fine. I can't max out SC2 but mid level graphics are good enough. FSX has to be dialed down of course, but it's acceptable.

But now with Skyrim coming finally, and Diablo III right around the corner, I'm wondering if my four year old system will be enough. I was thinking of doing one of two things:

1. Simply dropping a GTX560Ti 1GB card into it for about $220

or

2. Building a whole new I5 2500K Sandy Bridge PC with a GTX560Ti for about $800

Would a GTX560Ti even be worth it with an old E6750 processor, with Skyrim in mind? Or should I just bite the bullet and build a new PC?

You're probably riding the line for minimum requirements. If you have the money it would probably be worth it to just build the new PC. A Conroe CPU is definitely going to hold back a 560 Ti, but you should still see a very nice improvement over your 8800GT

Scythe Kama Flow 2, or Noiseblockers. What RPM you go for just depends how how quiet you want it.

Not sure how the fans mount, but if you can use 140mm fans with 120mm mounts, the TY-140 is a nice choice.

I put two yate loon D12SL-12 fans I had kicking around on mine. Only 1350 RPM, but dead silent and keep my 4.4ghz 2500k under 50 degrees after running prime95 for hours. Look nice too (my system has a completely accidental red/black theme) and cost me maybe 5 bucks for both.

Mileage may vary due to case airflow though, I have a HAF X.

Inexpensive 120s with good airflow: Yate Loon, Nexus, Scythe Kama Flow II, Scythe S-Flex, Thermalright X-Silent, Enermax T.B. Silence, Zaward Golfs, Cougar CF-V12H/CF-V12HP

Good, but pricier 120s: Gentle Typhoon AP-14/AP-15 (or lower/higher rpm model depending on your noise tolerance), Noiseblocker M12-S1/M12-S2, or M12-PS/M12-P (latter pair are PWM), Be Quiet! Silent Wings (or newer Dark Wings), Noctua

High performance, but noisier 120s: NMB-MAT, San Ace, Delta (just about any model, especially the first two options)

I have a Logitech N315 Lapdesk for couch gaming, thing is it's small and the mouse extender is shit, I am looking for a better lapdesk with a wider mouse extender and more space for my hand..any recommendations?

If you are running a GTX570 as your main card the cheapest truly beneficial card would be the GTS450 or GTX260, second hand GTX260s cost about the same as a brand new GTS450.
I personally wouldnt get a dedicated PhysX card (unless it was another GTX570) for the reasons stated above.

:(

Thank you, I was looking for something super cheap like GT220 or something..oh well I am getting another 570 soon anyway.

Spot-check time.

I'm upgrading my PC and building a "new" PC out of my old parts for my dad. The build I ended up with is pretty much in line with Hazaro's enhanced build now that I checked. In any case, I figure it never hurts to have another pair (or hundred) eyes looking over it. Maybe you guys know something about these particular brands I don't, or a hot deal I missed.

mYz1a.png

For reference:
  • I play at 1080p on an HDTV.
  • I use an HTPC case (Antec Fusion)
  • Due to the above, larger GPUs tend to be impossible. My previous 5770 was a snug fit. The card I picked out is a bit longer (~1"), but it's a shade shorter, which is where I had the most problems.

Thanks for the help as always. All of the regulars here have always been a great resource whenever I'm building something for myself or someone else.

I am looking for a graphic card...
How is a 6790 card...
I am not able to find gtx 460 and gtx 560 is out of my range
so between gt550ti and 6790 which card will be better?

my rest of spec are:
intel q6600 @2.4
4 gb ddr2 800
500w cooler master power supply

GTX480 vs. 560 Ti vs. GTX460

Which one to pick? I read GTX480 is massive, however the price is more-or-less equal, and GTX480 performs way better than 560 Ti.

My specs:

C2Q Q9400
4GB RAM
GTX 260

Okay, how can a GTX480 outperform a GTX560Ti? Isn't the 560 a newer card with better specs?

Not really, the 400 and 500 series are based on the same design (Fermi). The 500 series is the "full" implementation. The 400 series was gimped by TSCM's manufacturing process.

480 is the high end GPU of the previous generation. 560 Ti is the upper midrange of the current generation.

So guys, fuelled by all the Battlefield 3 stuff at the moment and since I'll finally have enough money saved up by the 1st, I put together my system today. It's a bit pricier than expected, but I definitely don't want to miss on the SSD.

I mainly wanna do all my normal pc stuff like surfing and working, as well as some Wii emulation and playing all the cool recent PC stuff in 1080p with highish detail. Stable 30 fps is all I need.

Here is what I came up with, please let me know if I should change something/could save a few bucks on some parts:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K, 4x 3.30GHz,
Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Pro3, Z68
Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto DIMM Kit 8GB PC3-10667U
HD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1000GB, SATA II (HD103SJ)
SSD: Crucial m4 SSD 64GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s
PSU: be quiet! Straight Power E8 550W ATX 2.3
Case: Xigmatek Midgard
CPU fan: Thermalright HR-02 Macho
Optical drive: LG Electronics CH10LS20

Only thing I'm not sure about is the GPU. I wanted to get the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 Ti OC, 1GB GDDR5 since it's supposed to have a nice and quiet cooler but apparently a lot of people have some problems with the card. There are some good 6950 cards are they comparable to the 560Ti? Or does anyone know a good 560 Ti that isn't too expensive?

6950 faster, 2GB cards not much more. Depends how comfortable you are with something not eVGA and if you want Batman..

So my friend basically gave me his desktop because he just built an entirely new PC. So I was thinking I could potentially upgrade the old PC to turn it into a media PC for the living room.

Here's my desired uses:
a. Viewing all my video media using Windows Media Center, including M2TS files, ripped straight from my Blu Ray discs (I have my discs backed up)
b. Viewing HD MP4 files
c. Playing Starcraft II
d. General web browsing, picture viewing, etc.

Here's what the PC came with:
* Intel Pentium 4 processor - 2.93 GHz
* 2 GB RAM
* Integrated graphics
* Windows XP

My questions:
1. Is the processor just too slow? I was planning on upgrading the video card, of course, but will the processor just be too great of a bottleneck for my purposes?
2. Will I need to upgrade to Windows 7 (especially if I want to network my existing desktop and this one together?)
3. Does anything else jump out at you guys as being an issue? Is this even a viable idea?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Was it free? Because I'm guessing that's a PC out of 2005 or something. Wouldn't expect to run SC2 well at all, lowest settings maybe. Might be able to play the videos. Don't really know much about that.

Any caveats I need to know about coming from AMD that might hinder my setup?

Yup. It was free. The minimum requirement for SC2 seems to be a 2.6 GHz Pentium® IV. How much of a bottleneck is the processor, assuming an upgraded video card?

A pretty big one, since SCII is a pretty CPU intensive game. At least on higher settings, I have no idea how that scales on lower ones. But yeah, obviously it needs some sort of video card, but it might not be worth putting one in there. Need to see what kind of motherboard it is and what slots there are. Doubt it would have AGP, but it's possible. Probably has PCIe 1.1. I think cards are still compatible with that, but I'm not 100% sure.

Bottleneck will be huge though with any reasonably powerful card. Unless you're just using that PC temporarily, I wouldn't invest much at all in a video card for it.

Nope, although you will have to reactivate Windows due to the new motherboard. You'll probably have to call and have them switch your license over, it's an automated thing so you won't have to talk to a person unless something goes wrong.

Specifically about the GTS 240, will I be able to play back HD video without slowdown / hiccups?

Must be bad if you are mixing words up :)

For Blizzard games an Intel dual core and a GTX 460 will demolish anything with great FPS and graphics so it isn't a big deal.

Not sure how it would be. For instance, a ~1.8-2.4GHz Core 2 Duo will easily outperform that system. That CPU is a considerable bottleneck on anything that requires it to do some heavy lifting. Music, browsing, photo viewing, and similar tasks can be handled well enough, but you're HD media hopes will lay in hardware acceleration. Quality, smooth 1080p flash, and high bitrate mkv/mp4/mpeg-ts/etc. are a long shot.

If you have a spare GPU, it's worth a shot. Just don't get your hopes up too much.

I just got home and my girlfriend's computer is popping up on every reboot loads of errors about 'Delayed Write Failed' for all sorts of different system32/ files.

She tried system restore while I was gone adnd it comes back with a lot of hard drive failures:

Hard drive space less than technical limits
Hard drive rotational speed exceeds system limits and may cause a system failure
Disk drive C:/ is unreadable
Damaged hard drive clusters detected. Private data is at risk. Restore is required.
Hard drive does not correspond to system requests
Boot sector of the hard drive is damaged
RAM memory speed decreased significantly and may cuase a system failure.
Hard drive rotational speed decreased by 20%

She also is getting a W7 popup about: Hard drive clusters partially damaged

Obviously this indicates to me a hard drive failure, is there any reason I shouldn't get her files off that she wants (just some pictures that are less than a couple GB total) and rip out the drive and reinstall W7? It still runs fine, I turned it on to copy over all these errors she is getting before I just turned it off again.
