hello pc gaf, i was wondering if you guys could give me some buying advice.
I'm currently running a core 2 duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz, GeForce 8800GT 512MB and 6 gigs of ram. I've been wanting to upgrade my video card especially now that I'm running a 1920x1200 monitor but I'm not sure what to get. I don't want to waste money getting a card that will end up being cpu limited. What should I get?

I'd take a look at the GTX460 1GB and the HD6850.

How do you like the FT02?

I'm in the process of choosing between that and the 650D which I was leaning towards initially but I've read that the front intake has pretty weak airflow (and the window is on the wrong side for my setup).

I regretted selling my 700D last year and I never really liked the looks of my Raven 2 case, so yesterday I finally picked up an 800D. Here's what the rig looks like at the moment:

wheresthewires.jpeg

specs:
Core i7 930 @ 4Ghz (20x200, 1.3v)
Noctua NH-D14
Asus Rampage 3 Extreme
6GB Corsair Dominator
EVGA GTX 580 w/ Backplate & High-Flow Bracket
Corsair HX 850w
Intel 320 Series 120GB SSD
250GB Seagate Barracuda
X-Fi Titanium HD

Today I'll order fans and a black x360 controller, then next weekend I'll buy another hdd to backup my data and I'll be set.

I looked at this for a minute before I realized how many components are already in there. That cable management is glorious.

I love the FT02. If anything, I wish there was maybe half an inch more behind the mobo tray for wiring and that the cutout behind the processor was bigger (or removable like the Corsair case).

That is a little high. My highest temp ever was about 82c and that was after about 8 runs of Uniengine which was maxing them close to 97% load on average. Most games dont cause the GPU's to be taxed that high, some do though...but for gaming, the highest temp I have had on my 580's is about 78c.

Do you have a custom fan profile setup yet?

I turned it off last night and gave it a rest. Booted back up and played some more Rift and the top GPU maxed at 82 and the bottom at 87, so a little better.

To answer your question though, I don't have a custom fan profile so any help there would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also not afraid to buy some new, better fans for my case if need be. Right now I'm running the default set up on a 600T SE.

That would be a serious downgrade in terms of air cooling. I'd only bother with the 800D if cooling wasn't an issue, or if I was doing watercooling.

I love giant cases that somehow make the NH-D14 look normal sized =]

What where you running before the 580? I got 2x EVGA 470s and was going to wait for the 600 series but due to the lack of news (and lack of 28nm wafers) on the 600 series, I was thinking about upgrading to 2x GTX 580s. Then build a new machine when ivy bridge is out with the newer GPUs

So I flashed my 6950's to 6970s and ran a 3D Mark 11 benchmark test and I actually achieved a LOWER score... lol!!

What that? I don't know what's up with that, but I'm going to try and work it out, something must be up... maybe I need to reboot or something because it's the first time I booted since I installed both cards since flashing them and things, but I'm overclocking them at the moment... will see how it all goes. They seem to be coping fairly well though - I'm just hoping that there actually is some sort of performance increase from all this mucking about haha!

Is that with the PowerTune option set to +20%?

Figured I'd post this question here.

So my friend wants to sell me his two (or so) year old gateway gaming PC that he paid $1000 for when purchased for $150. It has an i7 processor and a 4000 series AMD card. However, it somehow crashed and no longer has vista running on it. Additionally, he has had other weird issues with it. Is there a good way to test the hardware integrity of the computer before I decide if I want to buy it?

lol yeah, that's the only reason why I'm considering it. Haven't a love/hate relationship with the idea of WC

So I'm gonna do this in the next couple of weeks, any thoughts would be appreciated.

CPU: i5 2500K
Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H
RAM: G.Skill Sniper 8G
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212+ w/ Scythe Slipstream

Keeping
GPU: 5850
PSU: Corsair HX650
Sound Card: Asus Xonar ST
Optical Drive: Whatever it is
and my two HDDs

Stuck on a case, definitely don't want to put anything new in the one that I have now. Looking for something classy for about $200ish. Would love the FT02 but I sort of want that front USB 3.0

So my 580 SLI has been tearing through games but like I said, it's hot as fuck. Wasn't really bothering but I was keeping an eye on it.

The bottom card was at 87 and the top card was 80, and I got a BSOD and reboot. I think the first line said something "DRIVER_" but didn't have didn't have that much time to read it. Going to take picture if it happens again and do some research on it

May not be able to handle teh SLI ;(

Which is the most likely the issue?
- PSU (850HX) can't hold a 580 SLI (playing Rift when it happend) and 4.5 Ghz i5 OC (never happened prior to SLI though)?
- Cards or system overall got too hot and shut down?
- Something else?

Do you guys recommend getting another fan for the other side of the heat sync on the Hyper212? Even on the installation book that comes with it, it shows to put a fan on the other side as well.

it can gain you a couple of degrees, but you'd have to get the same fan (and a PWM splitter so they both run at the same speed)

nice for the enthusiasts but not really necessary for the average user imho

Do ya'll bitches even KNOW how awesome pc-gaming is? Do you? HUH?!

I'm a still a lousy student right now but I'm telling you as soon as I get serious disposable income I'm taking this hobby to the next level.

I'm finding out now. Bought so many games it's crazy and I haven't even played half of them! Most recent purchases were Bad Company 2 yesterday for $8 and Alice so I can experience some sweet Physx.

I was a student up until last December when I graduated. I said the same thing as you. Got out in workforce and skys the limit now :). It's time that's an issue :p

Thanks, before the GTX 580 I had a GTX 480.

My case fan wire is touching the gpu chip,do you think that can harm it or is it fine?
What do you mean by GPU chip?

It's touching a heatsink without a fan?

If it gets too hot, it can melt, but I wouldn't worry about it. Try to avoid contact.

Just don't get a serious gf or wife :P

What is the word on the X78 mobos? Im wanting to upgrade to a vertex 3 but my current evga x58 has no sata3 ports. I may just use it as an excuse to sell my old guts and buy new cpu/mobo/gpu/ssd. My twin 480s just kill me during the summer in Texas. Swamp ass to the maximum in your own home is total fail.

Case: Thermaltake m-ATX Lanbox Lite
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K
Mobo: Asus micro-ATX P8P67-M
RAM: 8 GB (Corsair)
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212+ w/ Scythe Slipstream
GPU: xFx Radeon HD6850
PSU: Rosewill 500W (will eventually upgrade this but it works for basics so far)
Optical Drive: Sony BD Read/Write drive
HDD: 1.5 TB Hitachi (I know, its not the best option, but it will eventually get upgraded
OS: Windows 7 (OEM)

Despite having never built my own PC, this went extremely well and I am up and running!

Have a camping trip today and tomorrow, but next week I plan to run the rig through its paces and get some benchmarks as well as see if I can make S.T.A.K.L.E.R. - S.O.C. and Mafia II cry for mercy!

Thanks to GAF for the thread and the opinions and advice in it. Helped me inform myself a great deal throughout the process.

Opinions on the Steelseries 6GV2 keyboard? I'm still using a shitty Saitek Eclipse 2 lol.

edit - or other KB recommendations; having it backlit is a bonus since I usually don't have much lighting in my room at night aside from the monitor

Haha yeah this is also another caveat ;D

Could someone kindly quickly draw the hot/cool airflows directions within the case keeping in mind the cases' fans aswell.

Thanks in advance.

Wait, why do you have two heat syncs up top?

It's the noctua d-something-14 it's actually just "one" heatsink that leads out to two seperate ones.

Ok, having just built my new PC and got on Windows 7 for the first time, I'm finding something really strange.

I basically am running an Intel 320 120GB SSD with a WD Blue 1TB as a secondary storage drive. When I head into Windows Explorer and click on folders on the WD Blue (ie. the secondary drive), the folders would actually take 2 to 3 seconds to load before I can view the contents of the folder. I have never experienced this in Win XP before where everything would pop up instantly. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Can this have anything to do with indexing being disabled?

Speaking of indexing, I followed the instructions in the OP to disable indexing but when i right click on my SSD in Windows Explorer and head into properties, the box which says "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed inaddition to file properties" is checked. What does this even mean?

I hate it. You're better off using a cheap rubber membrane keyboard if you like hard to press keys.

If you want a mechanical keyboard, consider one that uses Cherry MX Blues or Browns as opposed to Blacks.

Oh wow that's awesome. What is your CPU running at?!

Yeah it's quite great for a system running on air for sure. My cpu on the other hand isn't the best chip there is, I got lucky with my last cpu but this one not soo much. I can't really reach above 4.6-4.7 without voltages that are too high for me so I settled with 4.5@1.26v which I'm more than happy with.

Nice, are you running a 2500k? I'm still learning about overclocking so I'm not familiar with how much voltage is too much.

Hey now :D, it can always get better can't it :3? Give me some of that money and I'll buy a couple of SSDs and more goodness.

I'm running a 2600k but I wouldn't be suprised if they clock the same. I haven't read it anywhere but I'd be surprised if 2600k chips OCed better than 2500k chips in general.

ok, so I got i5-2500k. Are there any real perfomance gains if I try to overclock it? Never overclocked anything.

The HDD is probably goinginto sleep mode to save power. Disable it in power management.

If you o/c to ~4.5GHz, that's over 1Ghz increase which would be a huge performance increase.

Smokey, Corky...we all got our PC's built around the general same time and I am with you guys in that PC gaming is so fucking awesome. I have not really touched my consoles in a long time. Yesterday I used my PS3 to watch a movie, have not gamed on it for over 3 months...360 get's a little more use, but really have not gamed on it for more than 30 min at a time and maybe once a week.

I am so fucking backlogged cause of so many people posting the insane deals, my latest was Bulletstorm for $13.00. But my list and this is not complete is so out of control and backlogged:

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age Origins
Dragon Age Awakening
Two Worlds 2
Darksiders
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
StarCraft
Rift
The Witcher 2 **
Battle Field 2
Need for Speed Shift 2
Test Drive Unlimited
NBA 2k11
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (the new one)
Crysis 2
Crysis Warhead
Fable 3
Gears of War
Bulletstorm

All of these games were purchased in the last 4-6 months and have not had time to play alot of them. It's just some of the deals are so f'n good, it is hard to pass up on the deals. Both Mass Effects I got for about $12 each.

** The Witcher 2 is far and above the best PC game I have played. Visually, it is so f'n stunning and just an amazing game.

:p

I still use my consoles but really only for NBA2K11 GAF leagues. Other than that it's been my PC. I've had The Witcher 2 since day 1 and am still in prologue :/

Speaking of games I need some help. I just bought Alice and in the very very beginning of the game when you first take control of her, I'm seeing FPS in the low teens. I looked at Afterburner and it showed that my 580 maxed at 42% usage. I fired up Crysis 2 just to make sure something wasn't wrong with the card and it ran like normal.

Any idea of what's going on here?

I have the same mouse, I like it quite a bit. Good build over all. Do you have a monitor, speakers, and a mousepad?

What's a good mousepad? Maybe with a hard plastic or metal top?

Personally, the hard plastic tops never appealed to me. I've tried them, but it seems to be too "smooth" of a surface and I prefer a bit more resistance when sliding my mouse around. I've pretty much stuck to the classic soft cloth top and rubber bottom $4.99 mousepads.

Anyone occasionally get this annoying message in the middle of playing a game (in my case, BF:BC2)?

aero.png

My system is not slow. I have a i7-2600k with 8GB of RAM and an ASUS 6850. My Windows Experience score is 7.7. What could possibly be triggering this?

The only thing I can think of is because I'm running the game in Windowed mode occasionally so I can see teamspeak and other message windows on my other monitor.
