I think I have decided to get a SSD. Can someone recommend the best and fastest one with the largest size to run Windows 7 and maybe a game or two for less than $125?

Also, I recently bought a MSi 560ti to replace my 460 GTX. I have never SLi'ed two cards before, can I SLi these two? Any beginner guides to do it correctly out there? My PSU is 750w, is that good enough?
I'm currently using crucial m4 64gb with around 33-35 after window install + programs so thats prob best option for its price tag.

Only option you have with those is to use 460 as physx card.

@Saren is Bad: Disable Internal PLL in bios if you're not overclocked past 4.5ghz you shouldn't need it.

are any refreshes coming soon? should I go with a GTX 460 or is the jump to the 560 Ti worth that much extra change? btw, are the cards smaller than a 5850? I had to wedge that into my case when I had it
Q1 2012. Some are.

So I left my computer on to download Steam, come back like 6 hours later, and it went into a power save mode I guess. 600T here and the power light was flashing but no video output, and my Blackwidow wasn't lit. Mamba was on stand being charged though.

Moved the mouse and the computer lit up and started churning, but could never get a signal to output. Blackwidow stayed unlit unless I held down a key where it flashed. Finally just had to turn off the comp and turn it back on. Not a big deal by any means but would be nice to leave my computer on overnight or something without it going into this mode.

Specs are 580 SLI, 2600k, 128 SSD, 1200W PSU. Heard of hibernating issues with SSDs but I deleted hibernate so not sure on that.

Anyone know how to disable it? May be Windows or BIOS, not sure.
Disable ppl overvoltage in BIOS. Check your power save settings.

Thank you! I'm a total noob to SLi, maybe I will get a second 560ti soon and just do it then. How much benefit will making the 460 a PhysX card give?

That's a pretty good price for that SSD. I think I am going to order it.

It will only benefit you in PhysX games by not lowering your framerate. Unless you really care about I wouldn't keep it in as it just adds heat and uses power.

On every game I have bought from the Steam Sale this week (NFS Hot Pursuit, Lara Croft Guardian of Light, RIFT, Just Cause 2) and even The Witcher 2 back in May, I get 50-60FPS on the highest settings with just this 560ti alone. I think you might be right to not do it.. I am already paranoid about heat in my case while gaming.

Building newbie incoming:

If my GTX 460 has two slots for a connection to the power supply, I'm assuming both need to be used?

I ordered mostly parts from the OP's $600 build, but the CX430 psu only has one PCI-e port. I guess I'll need to find one with two of those? I should have done my research the first time :/

If that's the case, then the psu option for the cheap build should probably be changed...

edit: I just discovered the magic of the y-cable that came with my video card. Whew.

I must say, now that I've had my GTX 580 for a few days, downgrading from the 5970 was the best decision I made this generation. Every single game that I've tried I either got a performance boost and the games that apparently run at a lower framerate runs so much smoother. I was a little worried about my favourite lil' game ArmA 2 which did seem to utilize Crossfire - Even that runs so much smoother, no little hiccups when turning fast, no flickering shadows and no random dips in performance. Crossfire can, honestly, go to hell. I'm even getting more effects out of games I didn't even know were supposed to be there! The DoF / Heat Haze in Shogun 2 looks so much better now compared to the 5970 and performance is just as good, was even able to ramp up AA.

This post pleases me greatly considering I'm getting a 580 at the end of the month. Cheers Sethos.

Posting on behalf of my brother-

Current specs:

Case - GLI N226 Black Case (first case on google images, ie. not brilliant)
PSU - Silverstone Strider Plus 500W
MOBO - Gigabyte EP43-DS3L
CPU - Intel E8500
RAM - Corsair 2x1 Gb DDR2-800 XMS2 CL4
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512MB
HDD - 1 x 500Gb Seagate, 2 x 1Tb WD

I'm looking to upgrade my system, and would like advice on my PSU.

Firstly I'm going to be purchasing a new video card, and then waiting until the bulldozer to be released. I'll decide then whether to go with the i5 2500K or otherwise. 2x2Gb memory , a new mobo and psu will be bought then as well.

For the video card, I am tossing up between the GTX 560 Ti and HD 6950 1GB (or possibly 2GB) - heavily leaning towards the latter. However, using the newegg power calculator, it looks like my current PSU might be too weak for the 6950. Does anyone have any advice about that?

For when I do get a PSU, I am looking at getting an Antec NEO ECO 620C. My budget doesn't allow for anything too much more expensive than that.

Helppp,

Just build my first PC, all working ok. But it's not recognising/finding the graphics card, I put in the driver disc but it cant find the card?? Thanks

Get the drivers from the vendor site or from amd/nvidia directly.

Basic question: what do you guys think is a good future proof HDD partition size for C? I just bought a 1.5 TB Hitachi Deskstar HDD. I bought a bunch of games and I will build an entertainment library on it as well (not just games). I only need the C:/ part just for Windows 7 and other OS apps like Photoshop. I am worried that by time, not even 100 GB will be enough due to Windows updates, maybe Steam updates and Tool updates, etc.
I can't particion again as I need a massive external HDD to backup everything.
But I also don't want to designate too much for C as I want to leave enough space for all the huge PC games (6 of which are MMOs) and HD movie library. So how much is too much/enough?

Cheers.

Steam should be going to a drive other than C. Giving yourself 200GB should leave you tons of breathing room. 100GB would be more than enough, but you might have to be a tad more careful with installs and temp directories in that case.

Partitioning is a very good idea. It makes reformatting far less painful.

finally upgraded my cpu/mobo/ram (i5-2500k,gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3, 8gb)

pretty proud of my cable management
my antec 182b, still such a good case after all these years, it's a beast

Ain't gonna happen. For less than $125 your options are around in the 64gb range, and with windows 7 and with almost no programs installed to the hdd and no images or videos or downloads saved to it, you'll have about 5gb of free space. More if you delete hibernation I suppose. I've had this 64gb ssd for a while now and that's what I find. I have to manage my usage a lot because I frequently find I'm running out of space.

What you want is ideally like 128gb but you're looking at like $200-250

SSDs are not cheap.

Finished. So very very tired.

Build went really smooth, didn't run into an real difficulties. This was my first build on my own, aside from taking a my old mobo out to install a CPU backplate. Feels really good, man.

I'll get some better pics once my brother returns my camera.

As someone who recently upgraded from red team to a GTX 460 I'd have to say the same thing. I was naturally going to notice an increase coming from a 4830, but you can tell. Games run smoother, there are almost no issues at all. I liked my 4830, but if I need the green to get the best experience that's what I'll get I guess.

I just ran Furmark because I wanted to know how hot my gpu would get. After doing the burn in test for about 5 minutes I got 86 degrees Celsius, maybe it would have gone higher I dont know. Its the Asus DCUII, although I do have it an R3 it might be a bit crowded. Is this way too high or should I find another way to monitor the temperature?

Nope, that's fine. FURMark usually adds another 10C to regular loads. Also will suck a ton more power than usual.

Hey GAF I need help, I just got my ASUS P8P67 board and this RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB, when I turn on my PC the DRAM flashes red for like a second during POST then it turns off and everything boots/loads/performs just fine from what I can tell, after reading a while I find out that a red light means either a warning or that something is wrong, I tried to look up more info but I only find people whose red light doesn't turn off and can't boot at all.

What does this mean and how could I fix it? Any help is appreciated.

I think during the boot up everything lights up, the cpu/bootdevice/dram and gpu all flash red for a second to check it. If they stay on then there's a problem. I think

The lights are just the mb doing its self tests, long as they turn off you're fine.

Hey PC GAF.

I'm looking to buy a laptop, but I'm on a $700 budget, give or take. I want to use it to play PC games, but also for graphic design stuff. I'm eyeing Apple's offerings, but I'm worried by how expensive they are in relation to screen sizes, even as far as their refurbished stuff goes.

Where's the best place I can get the most bang for my buck, or what particular model from whatever company?

I'm having a slightly annoying problem and I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I just built my new PC (i5, p67, etc) and every once in awhile the computer wont boot. Like I press the power button and it tries to power up (blue fan lights kick in) and then immediately powers off. I'll open up the case and tighten the plugs or wiggle them around as needed, press the power button again and everything comes on just fine.

All the cords are tightened, all the plugs are triple checked... is there anything else that could be causing this? It hasn't happened to me again yet but when it does what should I be looking for. Is there anything I could be monitoring (voltage wise) right now to see if there is a problem? Any warning signs to look for?

Again, when it's running everything checks out fine. CPU, GPU, etc temps, speeds, etc all perfect.

FURMark is more stressful. I'd just minus 10C from it. Should be around right.
If that is the 3 slot ASUS that seems a bit hot, but the cards are fine to run that high.

Dumb question, but you have waited over 5 seconds for it to come on by itself after doing the fake startup right?

Set your RAM to its settings manually if you haven't yet.
Then swap power connectors on your DVD/HDD drives (Use a different one).
Could also be your HDD/DVD/some card is doing something weird with its startup power draw?

I'm just guessing. If it happens at least 10% of the time you could remove your DVD or HDD per test and just power on and power off.

Hey guys I'm planning on building my own desktop PC (mainly for gaming) for the first time! I'm outside the US and had to use Novatech instead of Newegg so I was wondering if this looks okay. I used the basic build in the OP as a base but had to change a few things here and there:

parts.png

Obviously I don't want to order stuff and find parts are incompatible with each other.

I've got an old lian-li pc65b case. Love the look of the thing, but i havent touched it in years or built a new pc since then. Is this case still compatible with todays motherboards or is there a new standard?

So I've about filled up my 500gb HD. Could anyone give me a recommendation on a harddrive, 1-2TBs? I would like to spend as little as possible, but also am willing to shell out a little more if the quality gap is huge.

Thanks!

So does this seem good? I can dial down the memory if people think it's not worth it. It's pretty much the 600 computer (with most of the increase coming from the installation process). This should run Deus Ex HR fine, right?

I decided on this build for my first time building a PC ,any comments or last minute advice?

my last PC was a 7/6 year old HP with Pentium 4 with 256MB intel integrated graphics card so I am very exited for a new PC.

Processor:Intel i5-2500K
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 LE LGA
Memory:Corsair Vengeance 8 GB( 2 x 4 GB)DDR3 ( or maybe save some $ and get 4G of ram?)
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650HX 650w HX
GPU: ASUS Radeon HD 6870 1GB
Sound Card: ASUS Sound Card Xonar DG
Hard drives: Samsung Desktop Class Spinpoint F3 1 TB
Case: Corsair 600T

can someone recommend a cooler for my build the case is a corsair 600T white or should I use the Intel stock cooler ?

There's a lot of people who will say "I will never buy brand X", but in reality, with a few exceptions (e.g. IBM Deskstar/Deathstar), their reliability are all about the same. Go for a fast 7200rpm drive like Samsung F3, WD Black, etc. if you're going to store and run programs on it; otherwise a lower rpm 2TB if you just want it for storage. I use the Samsung F3 1TB for my random games, a Seagate 1.5TB for dekstop storage, and 3 Samsung F4 2TBs for my file server, they all work fine, and I chose them based on price.

You forgot to add a case - get one with fans built in already if you're lazy.
edit:
This case is on sell:
http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=55447&promoid=1331&vpn=RC-370-KKN1&manufacture=COOLERMASTER

with the purchase of the case, you can get Antec Neo Eco 450C Power Supply for 39.99
(http://www.ncixus.com/products/60491/NEO-ECO450C/Antec/)

2)
That setup is more than enough for Deus EX HR.
If you want to save money, there are some cheaper components that you can swap for on their hotdeals page : http://www.ncixus.com/hotdeals/

(ex: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SE Fermi 760MHZ 1GB is $30 cheaper, etc.)

Samsung F4 2TB. Slightly cheaper is the 1TB F3.

Need a little tech help.

CPU: Intel Core i3 2100
Operating System: Vista Home Premium 32bit
Motherboard: Asus P8H61-M LX2 (Rev. 3)
Memory: 4.0GB Corsair DDR3 1600mhz XMS3 (2x 2GB)
Hard Drives: 500GB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s
Graphics card: Onboard Intel GMA4500

Via CPU-Z, the core speed seems to flip between 1.6 and 2.9...is it supposed to do this for both cores?

Also, the RAM is showing 600 odd, this seems a bit low considering the RAM I have installed...or is this right too?

4GB for now, add 4 if you run into problems. Unless you know you need 8.

The LE board can't BIOS overclock. I suggest you get the regular P8P67 or look at the MSI/ASRock in that price range. GD45/55 and Extreme 3/4

That's power saving. Normal.
RAM is x2 for double data rate, lines up right with your FSB.
I'd lock it at 100MHz in the BIOS instead of the 103 it is at now.
Some boards run it higher than normal to gain advantages in benchmarks and such. Not worth it imo.

Ah yes, a case that would most likely be important! lol

Regarding Deus Ex will I be able to get high level graphics? I know for Battlefield 3 I'm going to have to settle for Medium, though at least I can upgrade with this unit pretty easily for the first time in my computer owning experience.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Okay, I'll swap it back down to 4gb and for the 192, I have no idea I was trust trying to match what was in the OP, I might have picked the wrong one

Well I'll whip up a new cart picture later for final opinions.

Thanks!

EDIT: I missed the Battlefield 3 Specs, am I right or will I actually meet the recommend ones? Well if I upgrade to a Quad Core processor at least.

Man, you're mind is going to be blown going from a single core P4 to the quad core 2500k

Overall, looks good. A good, cheap cooler is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus. Although, it can be a pain in the ass to get on sometimes. Not sure about the 6870. I don't know much about this card, so maybe someone else will comment. I'd stick with 8GB, it really isn't that much more and personally, 4GB seems way too low nowadays. You might also want to throw in an SSD. They're one of the best performance upgrades you can do.

edit: Also, if you buy it on NewEgg. Be aggressive about finding combo deals that contain the parts you want. Mobo/ram, mobo/hdd, cpu/ram, etc are fairly common and can save you $10-30 each

Gah, I'm really torn here

based on the advice I got from this thread I came to the conclusion that I should get:

Code:
Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced Black
MSI P67A-GD65 B3, Socket-1155
Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
ASUS GeForce GTX 560Ti 1GB PhysX CUDA
Sony Optiarc DVD±RW Burner, AD-7260S
Corsair Vengeance™ DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9
Corsair TX V2 750W PSU
Western Digital Caviar® Blue 500GB
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
for a total of 9743 SEK

I went with the smaller hard drive because according to the stats it was more reliable and the GTX because it had more/better display ports.

But then I got the crazy idea to mess around with komplett's "Configure Ready-Made computer" function one last time, and found that I can get:

Code:
Same CPU
Same Motherboard
Same DVD
Same Hard Drive
Same RAM
Same OS
Cooler Master Elite 430 Midi Tower Black
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 560Ti 1GB AMP!
Corsair HX 750W PSU
Stock CPU Cooler that comes with the i5
for a total of 9340 SEK
AND they build it and install everything for me

What should I do, GAF? Is the ready-made setup a valid alternative, or is the CPU cooler that comes with the i5 crap? In the customer reviews one guy said the fan was quiet and another guy said it was moderately loud. Is this a problem for me? I use headphones, and the sound from my current computer doesn't bother me at all.

Getting my computer built for me is worth a lot to me, but I need just one more bit of advice before I can decide.
Is the alternative, ready-made setup a good choice or is there something that nerfs it badly?

I have chronic can't-decide syndrome

Any ideas on a cheap GPU for Football Manager 2011? Cousin wants a new system and FM is probably the most strenuous thing it will get to do. I know it wont take much but i have no idea.

Thanks
