Is it the stock AM3 cooler with the copper heatpipes?

Yeah it is.

As for installing it right, well, it's making direct contact with the chip, and I tried different patterns of dispersal for the goop. Tried a small dab, then tried kind of an 'X' pattern.

Is the fan running at full speed when the temps increase in the bios?

Check the setting in the bios to boost fan speed when temps hit ~50c.

Also if you're going to reapply paste, do a line down the middle method.

Okay, now I'm officially done with SLI / Crossfire. For the past few years, I owned all the heavy-hitters in Dual GPU Single Card throughout the years, 7950 GX2, 4870X2 and now 5970. I just loved that feeling of potential just waiting to be unlocked, a patch or a profile comes along and you get a nice performance boost.

As the years progress you just hit that famous derp wall so many times, you just have enough. With the GX2, I suffered through months of no SLI drivers for Vista and when they finally arrived, they were piss-poor. With the 4870X2 it was an endless stream of disabling CF to get games working without graphical artifacts, flashing lights and broken shadows, sitting around with your thumbs up the ass waiting for new CF profiles.

I still wasn't sick of it but now I'm playing some older games and it's exactly the same. Even newer games still aren't optimized for SLI / CF, terrible performance and I distinctly remember I couldn't play Shift 2 because either I had to suffer terrible performance or shadows going all disco. Just an endless stream of that.

Even my favourite game, Men of War, doesn't support CF which isn't too bad if the game didn't have an ATi "25 FPS" bug.

Now just to blow some random cash until the next big wave of upgrade-worthy cards arrive, I ordered a MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC, can't wait to get back on the nVidia wagon for a little while.

Sorry, this was just a rant, I have reached my breaking point - CF / SLI, won't miss ya'.

from what i've read, ATI cards have more issues with multi GPU setups than Nvidia.

profile and driver support isn't on the same level.

I was under this impression as well. I know there can be issues with multi GPU setups, but I thought it was less of one with Nvidia.

Also with Nvidia you really don't have a choice if you want to do a multi monitor gaming (unless you get a 590 and all 3 dvi's are on one card).

Few years. Max/very high at the start to medium later on. As an example I've had my GTX 260 since 2009 and am upgrading now. I'm looking for something like that.

I was looking at this. http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1170&products_id=17683

GTX 580 3GB. It's coming out on friday and $100 more than the 1.5GB.

I can't find the 2.5gb. This is the new one coming out here. It's not 2.5gb though... http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1177&products_id=17320

I'll probably get either the 2.5gb 570 or 3gb 580. Not sure which though.
Personally I'd get a single 570/6970 and upgrade to a new card in 6 months.
It should be a major step up in a lot of ways.

Otherwise go crazy and get a 3GB 3 slot GTX 580.

If AMD lanches the 7000 series this year, Nvidia could be in some trouble. Would be a repeat of the 400 series for Nvidia.
Sounds about right, both waiting for that new silicon. Don't see AMD getting a huge head start unless they really push it.
I was under the impression that they would both release super early Q1 anyway.

My PSU just died epicly. Loud bang, smell of smoke, me scrambling to unplug the PC for fear of explosion, heh.

What are the odds that it took CPU/GPU/RAM/Mobo etc with it? I don't have a spare PSU here to test anything.

Goddamnit. During the Steam sales, too!
Brand / Model?

Depends why it blew out. If it blew out because of some surge and the PSU sacrificed itself then everythign could be fine.
It might have had a faulty part and blown up causing some major voltage shocks when it went damaging your components.

Could be nothing, could be some.

I installed an older CPU into a new build today, Phenom II 955. Reapplied thermals, used same stock cooler. In the BIOS, it ramps up to like 55-56C.

Back on my old build, it'd idle at ~42C or so.

I reapplied TIM twice, cleaned chip and HSF with 99% Isopropyl alcohol as well. Does it just need to burn in?
BIOS temps aren't the best from my experience. Burn in is usually ~5C on older pastes, but it also needs time to be pressed and spread and fill in.

I think on most builds I've seen BIOS temps be +10C usually.

DAS S Keyboard (Cherry Blue or Brown) with student discount. $103 shipped.
You can get a Ducky from tankguys.com for about $110 as well.

Don't look at price, just parts.
Looks good to me. If you bump the SSD to 120GB you will get some increased speeds on it.

If you can use the student discount, get a Das Keyboard directly from them. If you can find a Rosewill RK-9000 that would be a solid choice too, but I don't know any place that has them in stock (and they aren't getting a refresh until September). I personally wouldn't buy a Black Widow, but I also hate left-side macro keys (not to mention I don't care for Razer much either). You also could scope eBay or even Geekhack classifieds for a Filco/Leopold/Das in that price range; Elite Keyboards will have new Leopolds in stock around the middle of the month but they're $110 before shipping (so probably ~$120 w/ shipping).

i don't live in NA but i can order from newegg or amazon ( and maybe elitekeyboards but i didn't try).
black widow is available in my country for a good price 90$. in case i want to buy another keyboard i have to buy it online and the shipping will depend on the weight of the keyboard :/
i would love daskeyboard though.

Question;

Tonight i thought i should get my old 8800GT out and put it in my system. Problem is the GTX570 i have is so large that when i fit the 8800GT to its slot, it sits maybe 2mm from the 570. Is this a problem?

I noticed in pics of 2 & 3 card sli setups they sit the same so i figured this shouldnt cause the cad to overheatl so i figure this should be ok?

Of note, my case has a 120mm side fan, 80mm rear extractn fan and a 40mm fan front and top of the case, so it breathes pretty easy. Ok to stick my 8800gt in there as a physx card?

Alone, the GTX 570 is probably faster running game & physx. With 8800GT, it's going to limit the GTX570's framerate. You are going to need to faster card if you go that route.

You wouldn't be able to SLI or anything with the card, but I think you'd be ok with your PSU. Do you overclock your CPU/RAM etc?

Nah I don't overclock and never use SLI.

Sadly, I got this:
EVGA Australia were not currently intending to bring in any EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD 2560MB graphics cards as they did not expect there to be sufficient demand for such a card. I have forwarded your request onto our contact at EVGA and if they reverse their decision

Lame. Looks like it'll be the GTX580 3GB then.

Ok, after a few days playing around with the new rig you guys helped me to choose, I must say I'm really impressed.

On the day the PC arrived I was unfortunately diagnosed a bad eye problem, so atm my right eye see at about 40% of its capacity and I have a nasty "blurry 3d" effect on anything.
And... in spite of that it seems like I'm sitting in front of a real "next-gen" system right now, while the chat about the new consoles it's just starting.

The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Just Cause 2... are really blowing my few remaining hairs off. ^^
The level of detail that a game made with love can show on a good gaming PC it's outstanding.
Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it: my gaming time is gonna stay on the PC for a while. :-)

So that's it, just a line to say thank you for helping me out!

Only error, maybe: I've installed the Steam client and main games on the SSD, moving other games on the 2Tb F4 with SteamMover (or it's the other almost identical software? can't remember). This is forcing me to keep a lot of space free on the SSD in order to have the first download of all games made on said SSD, and only afterwards moving them on the F4.
Maybe I should have installed the Steam client on the F4 and had my main library there, moving the "priority 1" games on the SSD instead.

As a complete PC building noob, this makes me un-easy. I hope installing that 212 plus goes well for me.
Well first of all make sure you don't put the motherboard in the case before you attach the 212, because you need to screw a plate onto the back of the motherboard. This was the first irritating part as the screws are quite tricky to fit through the board and then the holes on the plate, but it's a simple enough job. The real tricky stuff comes with keeping the heat sink in line with the CPU as you insert and screw in the retention plate thing that straps the whole gizmo in place. You may want a pair of extra hands for this bit, it really helped for us.

It's not super hard, it's just the only part(besides the motherboard) that really required some fiddling rather than simply plugging in in some shape or form. This was my first PC build too though, so don't fear.

Not worth the hassle. My previous build was water-cooled. Looks sweet at first, but once you start adding/moving stuff around, it was a pain in the ass. And, water leakage was always a possible issue anytime. I wouldn't touch it unless you are a benchmark maniac, was once, going for max overclocking.

Gentlemen, I'm looking at getting a MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II/OC. Anyone have one of these? Experiences? Good?

Edit: In fact, have people been happy with their GTX 580's in general? Any games you can't max out properly?

Recent, very happy customer here (Gainward Phantom 580 1.5 Gb).

e.g. Crysis 2 and Witcher 2 maxed out (except ubersampling for W2) all very smooth.

Yeah, it's tempting just because I get to do something different and put things together. I'm not excited about all the things that come with it though, cleaning every few months, the constant worry about a leak.

It's nice being able to run JC2 at 100+ fps lol. I have to reinstall GTAIV and see how it runs with the proper mods as I was getting 55+ but that was probably because the mods weren't working properly.

Installed my brothers yesterday (Asus 580 1.5gb) and I maxed out Metro 2033 and played Crysis on high at a crisp resolution with what felt like above 60fps. Going to start flicking stuff to very high today.

I've not been a PC gamer for quite a few years but this card seems a beast, it's yet to hit anything that would make it stumble, although I've yet to try TW2 on it.

I think 750W might be an overkill for you, since it looks like you're going with a single 560. Sure, it leaves some room for upgrades if you plan on doing that. Other than that I don't see anything wrong with it after a quick look.

There are much worse mounting mechanisms out there. The 212 really isn't that complicated, but if you're uneasy about it, look at some installation vids on YouTube to guide you through the process.

The Antec Sonata Proto isn't worth $65 (it isn't a good match for a GTX 570, either). The OP recommendation will be changing soon. Just have to wait for certain replacements to be released between Q3 and Q4. As is, have a look at options like the Antec 300 (only if it's ~$50, or less), BitFenix Shinobi, Cooler Master HAF 912, NZXT Source 210 ($40) and 210 Elite ($50).

Any potential fan recommendations would depend on your budget, size and whether you end up needing one.

Thanks for the tip, I think I'll upgrade to the Fractal Design R3.

Twin Frozr is one of the best 580s out. I have a ASUS 580 and I can run every game that I have at max. Crysis 2 on Ultra DX11 and hi res pack I average about 45fps. Before that patch on Extreme settings I was getting 60+.

You won't have a problem with any game with a 580.

So I put my computer together over the weekend:

Intel Core i5-2400 Processor 3.1GHz Socket LGA1155
AsRock H67M Motherboard-
PNY Geforce GTX 560 TI
Corsair 2x2GB DDR3 PC1600 Memory (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache
Antec Three Hundred Case
XFX Core PRO550W PSU
ASUS DRW Optical Drive

I originally ordered the DVD drive from Amazon, but they ran out of stock, and so ordered it from Newegg, but it won't arrive until today or tomorrow.

The build went surprisingly smooth. There were really only 2 minor snags:

1. I had no DVD drive, so I had to use a USB flash drive to boot Windows 7. My old computer had Windows XP, and creating the Windows 7 Upgrade boot disk on a USB flash drive proved to be troublesome. Luckily, my wife's laptop has Windows Vista, where the DISKPART version makes it easier to format, and create a bootable USB flash drive.

Additionally, because I got the Windows 7 Upgrade and not the full version, I had an issue with the Windows not liking the Product License Key I had (because it was an Upgrade version). I had to call up Microsoft, and they were able to verify my Product Key, and then they pretty much gave me a new one which I could use to finally activate Windows

2. The other snag, although this could have completely been bypassed, was the fact that the Hard Drive I got would not format in Windows XP. I wanted to install the new Hard Drive in my old computer, partition and format it, transfer all the stuff I wanted to save, and then install Windows 7 on it. But, it would not format in WinXP. So, Instead I just installed the hard drive in my new computer, and booted the Windows 7 boot disk (flash drive), and it formatted it just fine.

I gotta say, though, that this was probably the smoothest build I've done so far.

NP, good choice. Consider adding a 120mm intake. Something good but inexpensive like Yate Loons, Scythe Kama Flow IIs, or a Nexus silent 120 (black & white like your stock fans) would work.

As the case recommendations are out of date, are there any good, quiet cases for around $50-$60?
The ones in this post?

Front runners would be the BitFenix Shinobi, and NZXT Source 210. If you need more cooling, one additional, quiet 120mm/140mm fan can be added.

If you won't be going multi card in the future, I'd look at a higher rated 550-650W modular PSU. May want to also consider the Cooler Master Silencio 550, and Fractal Design Define R3.

RS4- said:
Heh. You keep looking at these loops. May as well check on the custom RV02s for additional ideas. Keep in mind, a triple or quad rad is going to severely limit your high end GPU options. I'd stick with the simplicity of air cooling as the FT02 excels at it, and space is limited. Just flip the fan switch to high when you start gaming.

Okay, I'm currently building my PC (~800€) and I have some questions since I'm overwhelmed by the available options. I've looked throught the OP and several other guides and still can't decide a few things.

Motherboard:
MSI P67A-GD55 (B3)
OR ASRock P67 Extreme4 B3
OR Asus P8P67 Rev.3.1

What are the differences? All seem the same to me. The OP recommends the ASRock. Why? The Asus one has Blutooth which the others don't. Also, I'm not looking for a Crossfire/SLI setup.

GPU:
I seriously have no idea here. 560-Ti? HD 6870? I'm looking to spend ~200€, maybe a little bit more. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

PSU:
Are 600W enough? Something like a Corsair CX600? What would be the ebenfits of going TX650, besides the extra watts? Any other brands I should be looking at?

Get a Steam account ASAP. The Summer sale is going on and ends July 10th. You can buy the games and when you get your machine up and running install them on there.

If you're uneasy about building your first PC (I was as well, shit was nerve racking) follow some of the videos in the OP. If you run into any problems bring them up in this thread, people are usually quick to help.

Yeah, about half of the major new games have CF issues until patched about a month later.

However I can work around it using Radeon pro to tweak which catalyst profile to force and tweak crossfire settings. I did it with Crysis 2, Witcher 2, and Shogun 2.

And yeah we shouldn't have to do this to customize settings. No idea why AMD/ATI isn't exposing profile selection given that they don't have a compatible one until 1 month after a game's release.

hmmm. that said, the pins on the other end of the cable look just like that, not exactly perfectly centered or straight and they fit into the psu just fine...

also, it's been too long i guess: am i meant to hook both the ssd and the hdd to the same sata cable on the psu or do they require power from two separate cables?

I've had a PSU blow up and everything continued to work just fine. You won't know until you plug in another one.

How did it go? Did it straight up fail or was it overloaded?
It went out with a very loud bang and lots of smoke... I don't know why, it was 700w so more than enough to power my PC. It was extremely, hot, though, so maybe that was why.

I've now contaced Ebuyer to try and get a replacement, so my question is has anyone in the UK had any experience returning items with Ebuyer? Now that I've submitted the request I've got an e-mail saying the only way forward was to call up a hotline between 9am and 6pm.

I'm not overly technical when it comes to PC hardware, so I'm hoping this won't be a headache. It's clearly dead, but if they start asking me in-depth questions I might not be able to provide the answers, haha. I've done a bit of Googlin and read bad things, so I was wondering if anyone here had any experience.

So this is my build right now. Unsure about the mainboard, case and PSU.

MSI P67A-GD55 (B3)
OR ASRock P67 Extreme4 B3
OR Asus P8P67 Rev.3.1

What's the difference between these? Any other comments or improvements to my build?

I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 480 SuperClocked+ card I bought last September. While there are no problems it runs incredibly hot under load. Anywhere from 91 - 98 Celsius, I think I should replace my 120mm case fans in the front, what should I get for my computer to lower temperatures but be quiet?

I put together the following setup last September as well:

i7 980X on stock cooler
ABS Majesty 1100W PSU
G.SKILL Trident 6GB x2
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7
ABS Canyon 595
Kingston SSDNow V Series Gen II 128GB x2
Blu-ray burner x2

Also, if I want to overclock my 980x more what should I get? I had it stable at 3.77GHz which I hear is nothing for the i7 9xx series CPUs.
