OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX30GXXX 2.5" 30GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227393

Is it tough to just have Windows 7 sit on the SSD, and direct everything else to go to the other drive? I have no experience with multiple drives/partitions on Windows. I was a Mac guy for too many years.

I love the idea of snappy wake up, snappy on off etc... If it's under $100 to make that happen, and it's easy to manage, I'm in.
Better to get a 60GB SSD. That way you can install Windows and you most used programs on it. You can find some under $100. If you go with a 30GB, you can really only fit Windows. And, it's not hard to run Windows on one drive with everything else on another drive. Just during program installation, change the default location to the the other drive, usually from C:xxxx to D:xxxx.

Should I get the COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 ? Will my machine get that hot where I should change what comes stock with the CPU? I have never made a machine before, and i believe I am ready to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

In my opinion you're better off saving for a larger SSD.
Windows would have to wait for the secondary drive to spin up, negating much of the boot time benefit, although the system responsiveness would be nice.

That said, doesn't Win 7 use like 30GB as a base install?

Well, I googled it, and the answer I found was that it sets aside/uses 16GB. Don't know if that's true though.

The thing is, I need a big hard drive in there anyways. I like to have a lot of games installed, and I have 70GB of music or so. So I need at least 500GB, and then we're talking dollars I don't want to spend on an HD. :) Are there any cheap and good 100gb or so. That way I could put all of my programs on there, and the current game I'm playing, and leave it at that. I'm guessing I'm stuck waiting for the other drive to spin up anyways. Damn, I can't wait for SSD's to be cheaper and larger.

I kept hearing bad stories about the Vertex so I told my friend to buy this out of a recommendation in this thread.

So how do you use your SSD, assuming you have one? Do you put the OS and your programs on there, and your music, pictures, and other data on regular HD? Do you find it cumbersome to manage the data with two separate drives?

I built my PC about a year ago, but at the time I used my old graphics card (GTS 250) instead of upgrading. The card is definitely out of date and I'm looking to spend 200 to 300 (maybe more) dollars on a new GPU. What are the best options and what kind of performance could I expect in a game like BF3? I know the game isn't out yet, but what do you think would be required to run the game on high at 1080p?

You'll be fine with stock cooler unless you want to overclock.

I had planned on using the option since I have it, How can I tell the temp of my CPU? Also I assume I should change then... Ill go pick it up tomorrow.

There are a lot of apps out there that can show you your clock and core temps. I use CPU Z and Core Temp. Yeah if you want to get some good overclocks you'll want to get a 212+.

You could try and go for a Crossfire setup, using two AMD HD6870's. You'll be set for a long time. :)

The heatsink spreads differently and not as smooth as stock coolers due to the heat pipe design.

Just follow the picture and you should be golden.

Quoting myself from earlier about how to apply thermal paste with a hyper 212+

Whoops. Without instructions in the box I went back to my old ways of a thin layer on the cpu itself.

Fortunately my temps are fine so it appears to have worked. I may go back and reapply sometime soon if I feel like it.

How is Asus LED technology? Sorta worried I'm gonna get a lemon with this $200 23.6" LED monitor I just purchased.
Computer LED backlit =/= LED TVs. They only use LEDS to backlight, there's no local dimming or anything. It's basically a way to reduce power consumption and make monitors thinner.

That's some bad advice. Raid 0 HDD may offer same write / read speeds, not the top end 6GB sata SSD with sync nand, but it's access time sucks comparable. It's going to feel way more "sluggish".
I think he's referring to me. I only suggest RAID 0 for a games/steam drive. Outside of my fileserver, all 5 of my rigs/laptops have been outfitted with Vertex 2 90/Corsair F90s for the OS and basic programs. I'm with you on this one.

*edit* Sorry.. double post. Haven't finished coffee yet.

Ok... all built (both machines) and my SSD is finally in use after two years being sat on my desk. Quick question though, should I do anything in particular in Windows to ensure it's working as well as it should be with the SSD? Swap file setup and whatnot?

I've put in a random 750gb HDD I had hanging around as well so I was thinking that I should probably install some things to that rather than the SSD (which is only 160gb and will no doubt fill up pretty quickly).

No one knows how BF3 will perform. If you're buying for that, wait for release then make a decision.

My PC has arrived today, I took the day off from work to build the thing, it's my first gaming PC ever.. feels good man.

Thanks again for all your help PC-GAF!

Don't crossfire unless you want to be tinkering all the time and praying that crossfire profiles are released for the game you want to use it on. I've had crossfire 5870s for about 2 months now, and have only been able to really use it a few times. Most the time I have it disabled.

If you're buying for BF3 wait. If you want to spend $300, get a 69502GB or 560Ti.

It's like Christmas morning in here with all these new builds. Giving me (and my wallet) the shakes, knowing that a Microcenter is close.

Thanks for the reply. I'm most likely not buying BF3 on release. I was just wondering what kind of performance I could get. Which has better performance, the 69502GB or 560Ti, or are they about equal?

Sound advice. I recently downgraded my 5970 to a GTX 580 because I had reached my breaking point. Almost every single game was having issues with the Crossfire card, whether it be flickering shadows in Shift 2, terrible performance in GTA IV or tons of micro-stutters in ArmA 2 - I had it all. Sometimes you won't ever see a fix for many of these issues even with new drivers and new profiles.

Despite the GTX 580, on paper being slower than the 5970, I got a massive performance boost in a lot of games and now every game is running smooth as butter.

I don't recommend Crossfire / SLI setups to anyone unless they know what they are getting into.

Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced for £75 seems like my best bet. Am I overlooking a better one? I don't really want to spend more and that one looks great.
I personally use a haf 912 case, very roomy and very easy to build in, 50 bucks after mail in rebate at newegg, room for up to 6 120mm fans. great case

It shouldn't G.Skill ripjaws work fine and they both have very similar looking/sized heatsinks.

They definitely got in the way for my build. I had to RMA them and get the low profile version. The pictures just don't do the size of those heatsinks justice lol.

The only difference is I had an MSI board. However, someone said the board layouts are very similar and it would probably be an issue with other boards as well. I'm curious how he makes out.

You can always clip off the heatsinks. They don't really do much anyway, they're almost entirely aesthetic. It started as a big thing because DDR2 ran hot. DDR3 doesnt, but even then, you need sinks that have a good amount of copper to do much of anything, which the vengeance doesnt have. The Dominator does though.

The 6000-series scales MUCH better with Crossfire.

Scaling well or not, the game needs to be crossfire compatible out of the box or have profiles released. HoN and APB Reloaded, for example, are unplayable with Crossfire enabled. Even some games that get profiles end up having microstutter issues or artifacting. This has been my experience over the past 2 months.

I was checking SSD speeds and I saw that Ocz drives are supposed to be the fastest around. But when I look at the reviews and even some posts in this thread it seems like they either break down quickly or end up DOA a lot of the time. Should I stick with the Intel SSD I've picked or risk the Ocz drives?

Stuff for my rig should be arriving tomorrow, pretty excited about the whole thing.

Just one question though, I've ordered a PCI wireless card, as I won't have my PC near the router most of the time, and I'm wondering if there is any noteworthy difference between one for a PCI slot and one for a PCIe slot?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to hear less horror stories about SLI than I do Xfire? Or if there are issues with SLI Nvidia usually takes care of them in a update pretty quickly?

Dis true?

Yuuup, way less issues with SLI. Same kind of stuff still exists for sure though. The added benefit of SLI is that you can create your own profiles, which is why you hear less about it.

For those who can't, you're still going to be at the whim of Nvidia adding profiles for the game you're hoping for.

So here is what I found:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSq_xbxsm7Q&feature=player_detailpage#t=129s

I actually laughed out loud.

That's terrible. The other funny thing about it is how freaking huge the cooler is in comparison to the board.

What's the deal with existing AM3+ motherboards?
Are these just boards with the AM3+ socket that will need a BIOS update once Bulldozer arrives? Or are these boards ready to go as-is?

And can we expect a wave of new AM3+ boards in 6-8 weeks?

I want to be able to reuse some existing parts (video card, sound card, WiFi adapter), but I'll need a board with 2 PCI slots to do that. The existing high-end AM3+ boards all seem to have only 1 PCI slot. Gigabyte has a board with 6 PCI Express slots. Absurd!

I could always just get a new PCIe sound card, but I'd like to save cash as much as possible, obviously.

Very few cards have those protectors.

edit: Wait, didn't notice you mentioned the brand of the card.

690 II is very nice. The HAF 912 is definitely roomier and easier to work with, though...but you'd also be losing air filters. Those would be my 2 recommendations in that price range. In the pricier range, then I quite like the 650D.
