I have never had a video card fail on me.

Is that something that happens once in a blue moon or did I just get lucky?

Newegg open box :)

Deal was too good to let go.

2 gig msi twin frorz II for 150.

Should have bought 2 for crossfire.

Also PCGAF what do you guys think of Monitor Ambient lighting, it supposedly improves perceived colors and helps with eye fatigue.

I'm having a hell of a time overclocking my processor. From what I gather, I can safely OC my i5 2500K to 4.5ghz no problem with my Hyper 212+. In the BIOS, I have to set my voltage to 1.3, but I can't seem to find what to do to actually change the speed of the processor itself? Is it the memory clock that I'm changing?

EDIT: bumped the CPU ratio up to 33 to 45, OCing my CPU to 4.5ghz. Windows failed to start so I set it back to the default speeds. I really hope I don't brick my brand new PC, lol

Finally got myself an SSD for my host drive. Couldn't resist the M4 64GB sale price at Newegg and have continually wanted one since I got the original Macbook Air 11in last year.

So the 6870 I won on Ebay came in today, I slapped it in, put the crossfire connector on and now it does a BSOD every time I launch a game with the error atikmpag.sys. Anyone know what the deal is?

Does the card work correctly alone when installed in the primary PCI-E slot?

If you haven't already, try updating your SSD firmware to the latest release, whether it's a newer, or older generation model. Crucial has had boot issues, and various conflicts related to using a SATA III device on a SATA II controller.

I updated the firmware to 0009 and the problem still persists. My PC does not shutdown when I click on Shutdown in the Start Menue. Instead it restarts. I think I found the problem though, but I want to make sure first. Can anyone go into their registry and see if the following exists:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
And look for PowerOffActive

In my registry, PowerOffAcitve is not shown.

You probably need more voltage. Try 1.35V. If Windows loads up, load up HWmonitor (so you can see max voltage and temp) and run Prime95 for about 15 min. If the computer doesn't crash, try lower voltage by 0.010V. And, repeat Prime95 test. Once you get to point were Prime95 crashes, increase by 0.005V and test Prime95 for few hours. That would be or close to your stable overclock speed with that voltage.

Thanks! I'll try this when I'm not drunk.

Also, that kind of method won't damage the CPU, right?

My advice: Keep it at 1.30V and see how high you get.
A lot of 2500K's hit a wall at 4.3 or 4.4 Ghz and it takes a lot more voltage to get another 0.1Ghz

You should be able to go 4.4 Ghz with 1.30V I almost wouldn't recommend going over 1.30V because the heat increase even from 1.30V to 1.40V can be notable. Unless good cooling of course.

I'd say 50/50 on 4.3 and 4.4
I got very very rare errors on 4.4Ghz that I probably would not have noticed if I wasn't looking for it.

My chip isn't as good as most though.

Does any one know if M4 64gb ssd comes with a sata cable?

edit:

SATA cables should come with mobo. My guess is no.

A little more research and found my answer. You're right.

Already using the ones that came w/ my mobo so I'll be buying a cable too.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

Hey, guys. Needing a new PC built for photo editing purposes for my sister.

Budget: About £400-£500 without monitor. Monitor is subject to how much a decent non-TN panel could be. eBuyer is my usual preferred site to use.
Main Use: Photo editing for Photography degree
Monitor Resolution: At least 1080p
When will you build?: Maybe in a week or 2, but can wait if good parts will have price cuts soon
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe (This means yes)

Not a single part will be reused, not even DVD-RW (we've already got a W7 OS to use though) and I'd like some consideration for energy usage too as this will not be used in an all inclusive dorm. I've been thinking plenty of RAM, fast disk drive(s), good CPU, and maybe a cheapo nvidia card for CUDA?

What type of photography software will you be using? Don't skimp on the monitor because you'll definitely need the space. Make sure you get one with 1920x1200 (16:10) - I find 16:9 to be too narrow for a proper work computer. AMD is cheap when it comes to multi-core and the software that supports it whereas Intel is preferred if you're more concerned with energy use.
She'll be using Photoshop. Yeah, I've been looking up monitors and I've been looking at a couple of well priced 1920x1200 IPSs. From what I've seen of benchmarks, an AMD solution is where I'm going to go. What about Llano like the guy suggested above?

On the RAM, I'm not sure where I should aim. It's like <£40 for 8GB of DDR3 these days, and with all of the history states for multiple images being stored in the RAM, it can soon mount up quick, so I could go higher than 8GB, but I'm fine leaving it open for an upgrade.

Oh somebody shoot me. I bought a new motherboard since my old one couldn't detect my harddrive and now my new one won't let me install Windows 7. It keeps hanging at the "starting windows" screen. I tried reseating my hardware and disabling/enabling Bios features. Somebody please tell me if there's a problem with my set up.

AMD Athlon II X4 Propus
XFX 650watt PSU
Asus HD Radeon 6950
4GB OCZ Ram
Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H mobo

I'd suggest waiting for Bulldozer which should be releasing fairly soon.
Those extra cores should help out in PS over the 4 of an i5 2400.
A Llano CPU isn't a bad choice either, but I'd wait 2-3 weeks and see (Hopefully that is release)

I'd try these:
Check and verify all connectors are in (mobo 4/8 pin power, GPU power, etc)
Plug and replug all power connectors.
Remove any extra USB devices
Set HDD to ACHI
Set HDD to Compatability or IDE
Run memtest 86+ if possible
Update motherboard BIOS

When I get heavily involved in a game, I hook my computer up to my Kuro 50". But I wanted a 20" to match my current monitor for my desk. Does Fry's even carry a good model to purchase? I see on their website they differentiate between LCD and LED. I'm guessing LED is the new hotness.

Something like this any good? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+23%22+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LED+Monitor/1375082.p?id=1218254504494&skuId=1375082

LED is LCD and in most PC monitors actually produces a poorer image as they don't use full colour LEDs. Find something that specifies either a IPS or VA panel, or any variation thereof, you're probably best off with an IPS based panel for a monitor though. The panel is much more important than the backlight technology.

This weekend Frys has a deal for a 2600k and an MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard for $390 ($350 with MIR) http://www.frys.com/ads/page7

Does that seem like a good deal? What are peoples thoughts on that motherboard. I've been thinking about starting a computer build (would be my first) and I thought I might hop on this deal since it seems to come out to a similar combo price of the lower end 2500k and a decent motherboard. Though MIRs are usually a pain in the ass.

Mobo is good. Deal not so much.

There have been a ton of $40/$50 off promo combos and unless you see the need for extra threads there's no point to the 2600K.
The 2500K isn't 'lower end'. It's high end with 2600K being 'specialized enthusiast' end.
It's for video and rendering.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=287
I guess I should have said lower priced. And I don't really see the need for 2600K, just thought that if it was a good deal that maybe I would go for it.

The Ivy-Bridge line will be a "Tick" production right?
Intel microarchitecture code name Sandy Bridge (tock), initially introduced on 32nm process technology, is the foundation of the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processor family. And, the 22nm tick of the 2nd generation Intel Core processor family is due to be in production at the end of 2011.
Tick because same architecture, but new process.

It should be a bigger jump than usual because HOLY SHIT TRI-GATES PLEASE WORK.
Should be interesting to see how effective the first iteration of them is.

Being video cardless is getting worse by the minute.

Thanks for this, never knew it had been released.
Bohemia Interactive actually gave them access to the dev tools so that they could go one step further than the modders.

God damnit, the card doesnt work... Or at least, when I run a game with it, it locks up my whole pc and pumps the fan up to full speed. anyone know what that could be?

Have you tried another driver?

I'm going to try installing 11.8, as I tried rolling back to 11.7 last night. We'll see how it goes. The card seems to work fine at the desktop and whatnot, is that normal for a defective unit?

Watch the temperature when you push the card.
Could be that the card has no TIM applied or the heatsink is loose and the temperature shoots up once the card is pushed.
Do you have a program installed so you can watch the temps ?
If that's the problem, are you capable of stripping the card? If not then just RMA it.

Well, the thing is, it doesnt really push the card. I cant even get to the intro screens of Deus Ex, or any game for that matter.

You would be surprised how quickly a temp can rise when a game starts.
Maybe the card is struggling when it reverts from idle state.
Monitor the temperature and see what happens also try a different driver.

That's what I'm hoping for, was going to wait for BD to upgrade but after the seemingly eternal delays and the fact I'll still need a new motherboard, I don't see much reason not to wait for Ivy Bridge. Especially if BD ends up being disappointing (I've lost confidence in this launch, AMD is way too quiet).

And that just sounds like a bad GPU. Temps would help determine that. If it's not the temps he should try Afterburner and set it to the speed on the specs on the desktop and see if it crashes.

Edit: Don't XFX cards have double lifetime warranties (so a secondhand buyer gets a warranty too?) You should contact whoever you bought the card from.

I have a question, seeing as I bought the card used, I can't register it on XFX, is there still a way for me to get it back to them?

Edit: Whelp, sent the ebay user a message asking for his second user registration code. Hopefully I can get that today and send this friggen thing back to XFX on tuesday.

I'm expecting a 25% bump in speeds from chip to chip comparison.
OC capability who knows.
Who knows about how stable tri-gates are with extra voltage too?

BD is coming up real fast and I really hope AMD has something to show.

You could have trouble ahead, see how it pans out with the buyer but I fear you may have been scammed. I refuse to believe the seller didn't know of these problems beforehand. Surely he tested it before selling. Get ready to open a dispute on ebay and did you use paypal ?
Apologies but that's the eternal cynic in me, I refuse to touch ebay after I was scammed selling my EVGA classified motherboard to a seller and lost £260. That place is a fleapit.
You are better trying the classifieds on the manufacturers forums.
This is the problem with second hand cards, the extended or lifetime warranties only cover the initial buyer.

I think like the card was damaged in shipping, the guy decided it would be a good idea to ship it in the original box with no padding other than a few folded paper towels and wrapping it in a plastic bag.
XFX has a double warranty system, which allows the card to be sold and retains the warranty, only, I need his "Second User Registration Code" so If I can't get that, I'm opening up a dispute. I did use paypal, is that helpful to me?

Try my previous points before.
But yes, paypal will make it easier to get your money back if you open a disput but then I am a terrible cynic after being ripped off myself and that's why I don't use ebay.
Still give the seller the benefit of doubt and hopefully you can this resolved.
I have had cards that work fine and even EVGA themselves post their GPU's in a cardboard box with no packaging.#
Good luck and keep my updated, I hate to see people get scammed like this.

Sounds like someone sold you a bad card on eBay.

Time for Paypal disputes. Hope it works out.

You should probably throw in cost and open slots and if you can put on a cooler.

You can buy an Accelero S1 cooler for a lot of cards
