You don't need i7, i5 2500k is more than enough.

If you want to play The Witcher 2 at ultra smoothly i think a 570 is better.

I think it's time to upgrade my video card from a 5770. Thinking of getting either the 6950, 6970 or a GTX 570. I could just get a 6770 and crossfire it with my 5770 but it would probably just increase the performance to the levels of one of those other cards and use way more power and heat up more.

I have
Phenom II X4
8gb ram
650 watt PSU

I'm leaning towards the GTX 570 but a friend told me I could have performance issues because I have an AMD chipset. I've never heard of anyone having problems with Nvidia cards in AMD systems though so he's probably wrong.

What would you guys suggest I get?

Best value is 6950. It rivals the 570 on some games and is significantly cheaper unless you're going for a top end 6950 model (extra cooling, OC, other features. The best 6950 I'd say is the sapphire toxic edition which has been documented to be (relatively) easy to flash to 6970 BIOS with shaders unlocked, which along with powerboost and high overclock gets up to 580 stock on some benchmarks and surpasses the 570. Other than that, the 570 is also a fine choice. There aren't any incompatibility issues between AMD chipsets and Nvidia cards.

And you're running sli 580s and that makes you an exception not the rule.

i have a 2500k and a 580 and it runs amazingly.

My mom's Intel SSD 320 series just died on her two months after I built her system. I tried booting it up on my own computer, but it's totally gone. I knew there was a higher risk with SSDs, and it was my mistake for not having her back up her information properly, but I am completely soured on them.

Does anyone know if Intel allows for refunds or is it just for replacement? I have hearing problems so I can't call them for an immediate response. I will have to wait for a reply.

Is it on a H67/P67 SATA 6gbps port?
Does it show up in BIOS as 8MB?
Have you tried it in a different system?

Intel is just replacement I think. SSD Failure rate iirc was estimated at around very good HDD. I don't believe FAILURE rate is higher. Buggyness sure.

Hey all,

So I`m looking to upgrade a few components and was hoping for a bit of advice on how to get the most of my current motherboard (M4A77D). Had to replace my motherboard about 8 months ago so not really looking to change that again which limits me to an AM3 processor.

Currently have and looking to upgrade:
Athlon X2 OC`d to to 3.1 Ghz
GTX 260
4 GB DDR2 Ram

Budget is ~ $500 CDN. Less would be great. Keeping the same MB means I can`t change from DDR2 so I`m thinking about just putting in 8GB and calling it a day on that front. Necessary? Other options?

As for processor, I'm thinking about either a Phenom 2 X6 1090t or a Phenom 2 X4 975. It looks like those are the 2 best cpus that my motherboard will handle. Any advice on 4 vs 6 cores? X4 can be had for $30 to $40 less in my neck of the woods. Gaming is my primary concern...not really doing much else that uses multiple cores.

For GPU, I'm looking at TI 560 or GTX 570. How much of a performance bump will I see with the 570? Worth the extra price? I'm looking to play current (Witcher 2) and future (BF3) games at 1080p above 30fps on the highest settings possible. How much of a performance bump will I see over what I'm working with now? My current setup is manageable and runs something like Deus Ex HR without too much trouble but I'm looking for a fairly large performance bump over my current configuration that will last me a few years.

Thanks is advance for the help!

What are the rules on possibly trying to sell some graphics cards here?

I don't know anyone that would buy them personally, so I figured this thread would be a good place to ask

I see people constantly bringing up 560ti's as possible purchases and I have two new ones that I'm trying to get rid of relatively cheap IMO..

Bad news for anyone contemplating an IB upgrade in the future: Intel is said to be making a huge UEFI mobo update, which would make updating any SB mobo next to impossible. Shame.

Where did you read this? All the mobo manufacturers are pimping IvyBridge compatibility.

Running a 975 @ 4.2Ghz on my main gaming rig. Despite being bested by Sandybridge, it's still a really strong proc. You don't really need that X6 unless you're running virtual machines or some such thing where you need more cores.

With the 560 or 570, you'll see a huge performance bump, somewhere in the margin of 65-85%, especially with an upgraded proc as well.

I can hear my mouse move oO. I have the msi p67a-gd65 motherboard and a Logitech G5 laser refresh. When I plug in my headphones in the rear slot (Audiotechnica A700) and don't listen to anything, I can hear my mouse move. It sounds like a violin if that make sense xD What is it?

edit: wtf, the sound only appears when I move my mouse on Google Chrome.

Looks like Nvidia is giving away Batman Arkham City with some graphics cards. At least on Newegg. Makes me really want to pull the trigger on my build I've pushed back a few weeks.

The upgrade path to Ivy Bridge might be blocked by changes to UEFI
http://vr-zone.com/articles/the-upg...ight-be-blocked-by-changes-to-uefi/13513.html

Most, if not all motherboard manufacturers have gone out and said that their 6-series Intel chipset motherboards will work with Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge processors which are expected to launch sometime in March-April next year. Well, it turns out that even if the hardware is compatible, there might be a UEFI related issue that will prevent many motherboards from ever accepting an Ivy Bridge CPU.

According to our sources, Intel will for example have to do a factory re-work on its own brand motherboards for Ivy Bridge support to be possible, as apparently a clean wipe of the Flash ROM on the motherboard is required to upgrade to the new UEFI version. This is something that apparently can't be done either by the end user or a service location. What we don't know is if this applies to all motherboards, or if this is an issue unique to Intel.

I just found out about this. I bought an open box 560ti on 9/6 and the promotion starts on 9/7. It's a long shot, but I'll send an e-mail to newegg asking for a code, lol.

Feedback, sounds like you have a shitty connection.

Well, you could try other usb ports for your mice or whatever, and try a different audio connection. Could also be improperly placed jumpers for stuff like sound or whatever.

Okey. Well, I connected my headphones to the front now and the sound is gone. That's good enough for me. I didn't set any jumpers, just the normal connections to the motherboard :/ And I tried different USB ports and the problem was still there. But thanks anyway :D

AFAIK, it's UEFI-based, but the forward interface is the same BIOS screen we know and love.

Yeah it's a form of cross talk, something is wired funny or wrongly and that happens.

My Dad's 320 got hit by the 8MB bug. It looked like it was dead. When it tries to boot, does it gives an error about the MBR? If so, it's just the bug hitting you.

To fix it, you need to secure erase the drive. Then flash the new fw, then reinstall Windows. It sucks to lose data. When I set my dad up, I made sure to implement an automated backup routine.

What's weird is SSDs are supposed to be more reliable than HDDs, but in my family's 30 years of computing, we've never had a HDD failure. But in 6 months, of SSD ownership, both my father and I have had drives fail.

I didn't know I needed to buy the "combo" on a Sapphire 6950 Toxic (same exact price) and it took about 5 service tickets and asking to speak to supervisors to get it sorted out.

Turns out that reminding them that returning the card and purchasing a new one at cost to Newegg works pretty well.

I guess the moral of the story is Newegg wants you to complain a lot before you can get past the textbook answers and actually talk to someone who can remediate your issues.

Gigabyte uses EFI. Like a few other companies, they have BIOS with a EFI/UEFI layer on some models.

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. Sounds like it's the 975 for me. Now I just need to decide on a card.

Anybody else want to weigh in / have experience with a similar build?

You can't go wrong with any card right now really. Just pick a price point and go with whatever AMD/NVidia card is at that price. 560Ti and 6950 both are at a really good price:performance point. 570 and 6970 are still amazing cards if you want to plop that kind of cash down.

Do you have a page that list 9/7 as the start date of the promotion? I bought my 560ti on 9/7 and I'm going to e-mail newegg's customer service about getting a code.

After the discussion last night I had in this thread with LordCanti, I decided to rethink my plans. I am going to build it myself, and after deciding that I went to Newegg.ca and started looking for some better deals. I think I did pretty well, but we'll see :lol. Like before, any recommendations are welcome as I'm still pretty new, have no experience really. Just been reading extensively.

Thanks to Exodu5 for the heads up on the SSD deal. 64GB should be big enough to use as a boot drive right? I don't know how much space I'll have left with Windows 7 on there.

Anyway some screens:

pcbuild2-1.jpg

Any input is appreciated. Anything I should check for compatibility? I need to check if the case can fit the CPU cooler I think.

Edit: Oops, just noticed I selected a power supply/memory combo with 4gb instead of 8gb. That will be changed since Newegg has a combo deal on the same PSU and 8GB memory of the same type.

My budget was $1200 and I came in under (barely!) at $1193.90

Seems a perfect build to me. Loving the SSD, mine should be around next week :P

What's a good benchmark everyone is using these days? Just got my 580 DCII and want to run a benchmark on my old card before taking it out so I can see how much improvement I'm getting.

You can find 8GB of RAM for around $13 more. Definitely within $60. I wouldn't recommend only going with 4GB right now with RAM being so cheap, and something you're going to want to upgrade later anyway.

And it seems you noticed the only major flaw. Have fun!

Not sure how many times they're going to do this, but Newegg is a repeat offender when it comes to Hyper 212+ pricing. MSRP is $29.99. Don't pay a penny more. Look to Amazon, Fry's, Micro Center, etc. The Rosewill Challenger is not worth $55 - check the OP for other options, or buy the Challenger elsewhere. Even if it were, it's not a good match with your PSU. On the subject of the PSU, you don't need anything close to 750W, unless you intend to run multiple cards at some point. You can save money with a lower wattage model, or go for a better spec PSU in that price range. That ASRock now comes in a Gen3 variety. It normally costs about the same (or ~$10 more), and has more features.
