Ohhh, I'm using d3d overrider for triple buffering; probably it then.

Is there a list of games that d3d overrider messes with, so I know when to turn it off?

For me

List of games that won't work/messes up the game : Gta 4
List of games that work flawlessly with d3do : The rest

But yeah, try to turn it off and run the game again, it'll most likely load much faster and perform slightly better but I don't know what the root of your 1fps slideshow problem is.

Hmm, yeah that didn't fix it. I tried booting up Metro 2033, one of the other graphical powerhouses and even at very high settings, dx11, 1080p it still ran smooth around 30fps with no AA. But GTA, even with shadows/reflections off still runs 1-3fps slideshow.

It seems like whenever it has to load new objects into view (cars, buildings, people) it stutters and freaks out. If I sit still and just watch the cars on screen roll by it's smooth 60fps, but turn an inch so new things come into view and it's a slideshow.

Maybe it's some sort of driver bug or something?

Are there any new sets/series of GPUs coming out anytime soon? Right now I game in 1080p on a 5770 and it struggles a bit when cranking effects and such up. So I've been thinking about upgrading to a 6950 or gtx 570. But if a new batch of cards are coming I might just wait.

What are some good speakers/woofer for under $200. I checked the audiophile thread but that seems to be the thread for crazy setups that are way way way out of my range.
Quoting, because I too would like someone to chime in on this.

Shocked at how well this system handles these games. Have never owned such a high-end machine. Feels good, man.

Isn't it? I've been playing TF2 on an old C2D macbook pro connected to my 27" monitor. The game had to be run at the lowest of the low settings (I'm talking forcing DX8 and such), just to get above 30fps at 768p resolution. When I first booted up TF2 on my new rig, using a maximum quality config at native 1440p resolution, I was blown away by the image ]and the stability. It is consistently at 120fps, seemingly never dipping below 60. I thought to myself: "is this real life?" that's when I knew, I could never go back.

Radeon HD 7000 series of cards should be out late september, early october as far as we know. It is a new die size, so some people prefer to not be earlier adopters. Leaked charts show small performance increases, but apparently dramatic reduction in power usage.

Corsair SP2500 are supposed to be pretty good for $250. I have heard good things about Logitech speakers, but I can't name any models or prices.

I have no idea for under 200.

Bought one with my new rig recently and I like it enough, has some pros and cons. The trick scroll wheel that changes from clikcy page/line scrolling to free scrolling is great for long pages and pretty neat overall. The forward and back buttons are a bit small but well placed for my hand, sometimes I hit the button in between but I don't know what it does. The on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment is nice in that it is on top of the mouse rather than underneath (looking at you Razer Deathadder). The L&R click buttons are a bit small at the most front point and kind of points my fingers at a weird angle to get around the scroll wheel and back onto the buttons. The build quality is ok, it feels a bit plasticy (sp?) and the paint has already worn of on main contract points (heel of the hand and L&R buttons). The adjustable weight system is nice if you like a heavier mouse, can jam a few in the bottom. In terms of ergonomics, it feels good in the hand, don't get tired after long use, pinky tends to rub on the mouse pad but thumb is cradled.

tl;dr would I buy it for 50% off? Yes, I would buy two.

Just the post I was looking for. Thanks.

Are there any decent nvidia cards coming out before BF3/Skyrim? I'd like to upgrade my GTX 260 before then but I haven't heard much about new cards this year.

I'm getting so sick of the nvlddmkm (and the ati equivalent) error, it only happens while gaming. I know it's not my video card either. It happens on 3 different cards. 2 nvidia 1 ati.

No, next lineup of nvidia gpus are coming sometime ~Q1-Q2 2012

What leaked charts would those be? The leaked charts in this topic showed a huge increase in performance. The 7870 (6870 replacement) specs showed that were more powerful than the 6970 at less than half the wattage. The flagship 7950/7970 specs indicate a huge performance increase over the current 6950/6970, as well.

Hey, so I tried running GTAIV as a benchmark for my i7 920@3.8ghz, 6 gig ram, 580GTX system and maxed out at 1080p it runs like 1fps slideshow.

If I drop the settings so it's using under 1gig of videoram resources by lowering the vehicle density and dropping shadows from ultra high -> high, it runs 40-60fps, when there's not many cars/objects to render it's 60fps all the time, but once the street view comes in with cars and buildings and pedestrians the framerate dies. This is with no SSAA or anything.

Is something going wrong?

Bebpo said:
Yeah, uh, I just tried dropping to 800x600 resolution, everything set to LOW so GTAIV looks like a PSP game.

Still get 1fps; none of the settings seem to affect anything.

Which is weird because on this same system with my old card it ran fine. Sure I couldn't set the textures past medium and had to keep things down to get 30fps+ but at least it ran. So I change cards to a way better one, install the latest Nvidia drivers and suddenly game won't run past 1fps anymore outside.

I have no idea wtf is going on. No other game has given me problems yet as I test around with my new setup.

Oh shit..Now I know I wasn't crazy.

This same shit happened with me and my Asus DCII 580 with GTA IV. It's the utilization. It goes up and down and that's why your performance suffers. I blew this thread up trying to get it to work correct and nothing worked. Changed drivers, power mode at max, went to low settings. Nothing worked.

With my Lightning 580 I have not had this problem at all.

doh, so for some reason GTAIV just doesn't work with this one card. Yikes. Hopefully it's the only game in the world that is incompatible with this card. You don't know of any others right?

Guess I will wait another 3 years until my NEXT card to play GTAIV and the expansions :P Not in a rush since I don't really care for that game that much and have hundreds others to play, but still kind of annoying.

Very annoying. It was very inconsistent too. Some times it worked correctly with GTA IV other times (mostly) it would do what you're describing.

That game and NFS Hot Pursuit were the two that gave me the GPU utilization issue. Less so in NFS: HP but still noticeable.

Did you try to overclock + increase voltage on that asus card you had?

Smokey said:
Yep.

Checked forced voltage, overclocked, ran stock clocks it didn't matter.

bummer, the DC II cards seem good I wonder if this problem is somewhat common.

No way, we would know a lot more about them by now, including release dates and leaked benches.

As was said, Q1-Q2 2012. Any reason you don't want to go with AMD?

Was that really the case? If so then I'm glad to be wrong. I may very well sell my 6950 and upgrade then.

Yeah, I feel that way too. The Sept-Oct date is what I saw reported on PC hardware sites. There is no official word.

I wouldn't say they are a huge jump but it's hard to say from just looking at the specs since it's a new architecture, but it looks like more built around efficiency. It had 2000 SPs, 2GB of XDR 2 while using less power.

Sept-Oct was more SemiAccurate's earliest possible release date. I imagine AMD really wants them out alongside BF3. I think something like late Oct-early Nov is likely with full gaming lineup out by Dec.

hey guys whats the best program to listen to music with while playing games? WMP uses too many resources on 4 gigs of ram and I sometime crash while playing music and playing games. Winamp still the best lightweight option?

What's the difference? I mean why?

It's worth noting, especially if you use older DDR3 memory, that you need to keep the VCCIO/VCCSA and memory voltage within 0.5V of each other. This follows on from the same rule set by Nehalem and Lynnfield, but given that the whole Sandy Bridge die is now 32nm and operates at a lower ~1.15V voltage, mixing this with older 1.65V+ DIMMs puts it on the fringes of acceptable long-term reliability.

man, realizing that the board i got is a p67 LE makes me feel like an idiot. I stood away from the H67 in order to be able to overclock the i5 2500k and now i realize i can barely take it to 3.8ghz with this thing, just.. FUCK. Wasted money basically, and a real cripple to everything else i got, what a fucking screw up, plan to buy a new mobo starts now i guess.. it never ends, and no way im getting that kinda money till basically.. next year.

:(

Well, the good thing about waiting until next year with a new mobo is that you'll get a mobo that is guaranteed to work with Ivy Bridge. Still sucks though.

specially cause im still having this awful high pitched noise issues, wich i now attribute to this mobo being considered a piece of crap.

Thanks to this thread, I built a PC. I've been playing Ass Creed 2, SSF4 AE, and Batman Arkham Asylum on highest settings and wondering why it's so awesome. Especially AC2. So amazingly good.

My specs:

CPU Intel Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz
8gb DDR3
Motherboard ASUS P8P67 PRO LGA 1155
GPU EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR GeForce GTX 460
Some cooler master case with tons of fans
23" ASUS EVO monitor

I'm an EXTREME PC newb. Any suggestions as to what types of things I should do/be looking for/download to help with future things. i'm not near my case and I'm lazy. I'll add pics to this post later.

Thanks, PC gaf. :) I'm now a happy part of the master race.

The Witcher 2 is fucking sweet. It's light enough to carry between my room with the monitor and the big comfy couch to enjoy my stuff on a large screen.

I decided to go with the GTX 560 ti. Cheap enough and seems like a modest boost over my gtx 275.

I mean, I can run Battlefield 3 at maximum now! right?...right? :(

No.
Maybe. Don't expect 60fps with all the bells and whistles on though

Gaf, why does my computer lag when playing Assassin's Creed II? I've played Left 4 Dead 2 on max settings with no problem and with my current setup I should have no problem playing Assassin's Creed II. This is my setup.

AMD Athlon II X4 640
Asus HD Radeon 6950
4GB DDR3 Ram

What tweaks should I have to do?

Just ran HWMonitor for the first time. Could someone more knowledgeable interpret these readings for me? Are they fine?

hwmonitor-1.png

Thanks.

Man, I keep getting a BSOD and then "BOOTMGR is missing on startup". I have an SSD + HD, and the crashes happen when I'm using a browser (Firefox, Chrome).

I tried everything, including installing the browser on the HD instead of the SSD, but I still get the crashes. It's really annoying, because the only way to fix is is to unplug my HD, boot my PC, then turn it off, plug it back in, and boot again.

Help?

They're all fine for when idling, but temp readings are really only useful when the system is under load.

@DigiMish better backup while you can. What is the make/model of your SSD?

It's a brand new Mushkin 120 Gb Chronos. I've been reading a lot, and apparently it's a problem with the Sandforce drivers that all the SSD makers use.

The annoying is that the BSOD only happens when I'm using a browser. I think it's some sort of a memory issue. However, I've tried both Firefox and Chrome, tried installing Firefox on my HDD instead of the SSD, and yet the same problem remains.

I can't be the only one having trouble with this...

On my old AMD setup, I had constant issues with a Vertex 3 (Sanforce as well) crashing when using FF. What would happen was, even when using a HDD, my system would hang for a bit. FF would have some sort of memory issue, become unresponsive, then after 15 seconds, all would be well. But with the SSD, that system hang would crash the OS.

What ultimately helped were the subsequent firmwares. Also, OCZ always claimed it the BSOD errors had something to do with the power saving modes implemented on the. So I just began restarting my PC every time I woke it from sleep.

Best advice is to keep updating the firmware, and if it keeps happening, get in touch with the company for an RMA
