Is arctic silver that expensive where you are? (no offense)

I built my new comp last week (1st build wooo) and its PERFECT. Screens coming.

Case : Fractal Design Define R3 black
PSU : Corsair TX750
Motherboard : Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3
RAM : G.Skill PC12800 Ripjaws CL9 2x4gb
CPU : Intel Core i5 2500K
Cooler : Coolermaster 212+
GPU : MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr III
SSD : Crucial M4 128gb
HDD : Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2tb
DVD burner : Asus somethingsomething

This is a remarkably similar build to the one I'm planning at the moment. I'll write up a full post with all my questions in the near future, but for now, how does the 212+ fit on your Gigabyte motherboard with regards to your RAM? I'm concerned that the cooler will block the fourth slot, especially if I get RAM with a heatsink like you have.

Chinner said:
sorry for being curious :(
How dare you, I shall eat you tonight with carrots ... <3.

I don't know if it blocks the slot but it would put the ram stick too close to the fan imo. Thats said, having two slots of ram with 1x4gb in each is largely enough. Are you sure you need the 4 slots for your PC?

The thermal paste looked pretty average as far as I remember. i'm not sure how to qualify it but I'd say it's better to use some arctic or other famous brands.

I'll only be using two slots to begin with, but I'm just thinking about the future. I doubt I'll need to add much more than one slot's worth before the motherboard will need upgrading I guess, so it's not really a big deal.

You should be ok with RAM that doesnt have big heatsinks on it like xms3 or sniper sticks

I'm looking at building for BF3 next month a gtx570 and bunch of other popular parts... However I'm reading the news about 28nm cards.. Any news if they will be this year? :/ rumours make them sound like a big upgrade.

They should be a bigger jump than what we saw with the 5000/400 series to the 6000/500 series, since those were just revisions. And AMD's cards are supposed to be available this year, but NVidia won't have them available until next year.

And regarding thermal paste, I'd recommend Shin Etsu X23-7783d. A bit better than stuff like ICD7, and it's usually pretty cheap ($4-$6 a tube depending on size) if you can find it. But you really can't go wrong with any "good" TIM from any company. The difference between the best stuff from most companies is 1-2C, and it's not likely that will make a difference in your OC.

I just went with the low profile version of my sticks. Don't need no stinking spreaders and my d14's ass has plenty of clearance over the memory.

Was installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1, and received this error message upon restarting the system:

"Fatal error C000003A applying update operation 9182 of 116844 (System...)"

Apparently it's a common error when trying to install SP1 simultaneously with other Windows updates. Best solutions/workarounds?

Just curious,

Currently I have a 5870 and it does well on most games but i've noticed that on a few games there are a few stutters here or there. After running some benchmarks I noticed I was only getting about 30fps at 1280x1024. It's odd but it's almost like my card is slowing down or something. I did some research and did some OC and moved the clock from 875 to 900, memory from 1250 to 1290. Did another bench 55fps. Could there be a problem with my card or is it just my imagination?

It's very similar to the one I'll be building in about two weeks.

SSD : Intel® SSD 510 Series 120GB
HDD : Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
DVD burner : Samsung SH-S223C

I'm also putting Noctua fans wherever I can in the case.

I'm not expecting anything but i'll ask here. Any chance of getting a decent PC for £150? I'm not really expecting play stuff like Crysis 2/Skyrim on it. A bunch of indie games and stuff like Phantasy Star Online 2.

does anyone know what the thermal paste included with the hyper 212 + actually is?
I think it's some type of CM brand thermal paste (as obvious an answer as that probably is), but the temperature benchmarks I saw weren't favorable so if you're thinking of using it I probably wouldn't bother.

Being reported in a few places now. Dunno if the pricing is real or not but here it is anyway.

So it looks like Sandy Bridge-E isn't really useful in gaming applications, not that anyone was expecting any different.

The real question mark is Ivy Bridge.

Surprise!

Yeah, I really wonder what tri-gates and 3rd transistors and whatnot will bring to the table.

Any thoughts on my current monitor, Dell 2405FPW. It's quite old, am I being held back in any way? I'm thinking of replacing it with a TV for the whole comfy couch deal, but are current gen monitors a marked improvement over this or a 1080p tv? I'd say my budget is somewhere around $400 - $500, maybe wait for BF? (i5 2500k, gtx 570)

Ok, I have a (hopefully not) serious problem with my pc.

Red dots are appearing on the screen (actually, looking at it, different coloured dots also, but harder to spot them) They remain in the same general area, and some of them flicker on and off.

The dots seem to be dependent on the colour shade being displayed. For example, if I had a picture in a window, and certain areas had dots, when moving the picture across the desktop the dots remain at the same point in the picture.

I have not played any games since I found this issue, which was about 10 mins ago, for fear that it is the graphics card.

I built the pc around 2 months ago and have had no problems as of yet.
It is a 560ti with a i5-2500 (nonk). No overclocking or underclocking.

I have no idea of what to do now. All I have done really is look at my pictures folder in horror, checked the temps of my cpu and graphics cards (28 for gtx and 29 for cpu), and rebooted my pc with no success.

Help!

Edit: Just, did a quick test, not my monitor.

Try to run a gpu heavy benchmark like unigine and crank the settings to see if you get these artifacts there as well. Also keep an eye on your gpu temps under load, high temps can cause artifacting.

So I've narrowed my mobo choice down to two candidates:

ASRock Z68 Extreme3 GEN 3
ASRock P67 Extreme4 GEN 3

The Z68 Extreme3 is cheaper than the P67 Extreme4, which I find to be a bit weird. Is there something special with the Extreme4 models that the Extreme3 doesn't have? As far as I can see, the only difference is that E4 has one more PCI-E slot, and two more Sata 3Gbit slots.

I'm not planning on running sli or crossfire, and I don't intend to have more than 3 HDDs at one time either. So, I'm thinking that the Z68 mobo would be the one to go with since it's cheaper. Or are there any other features that the Extreme4 has that I'm missing?

EDIT: I'm reading that some Gen 3 mobos have problems with overclocking. That doesn't sound too good. Perhaps it's better to go with a Rev B3 mobo instead?

Ok, so I ran the unigine thing for about 10 mins, not the benchmark mind you, and no artefacts where noticeable.

the thing to note is that the dots are pixles, so it is hard to notice, only really clear on a desktop background.

Had dinner, came back and now there are significantly more dots on the screen! Red and green.

Shit, is my graphics card dying before my eyes! its only 2 months old!

Is it too late to RMA it? Idk if I even have the box any more.

Sounds like it is, but still did you check your temps? I mean even a healthy card can crash / produce artifacts if the temps get too high. But RMA and warranty should be like a year and if it's only 2 months then I see no problem why you shouldn't be able to send it back.

Temps are fine, like I said the dots appear on my desktop when the card is not doing anything at like 30C.

Thanks for your help, guess I will just send the card back. :(

How much is too much to spend on a build? I'm thinking about dropping at the least 150k. It must run BF3 at 60 FPS and will last me a long time and be well prepared for next gen.

Chinner said:
150k isn't enought you'll probably need 200k at least (not including monitor).

200k? What kind of crappy house have you thought about storing this pc in?

Atleast a million. K.

Is a Quad-core a must for games if you want to run them on higher settings/above average? I'm running a GTX 560 Ti and AMD PhenomII x3 720 and it might seem like the tri-core is holding me back in some games. Maybe I'm just expecting too much preformance out of my setup and i'll just have to take that fps drop at higher settings/more AA, but would be swapping in say a PhenomII quad be a big upgrade or a i5 2500k be a big upgrade? Or is it simply not worth it when I look at the money I'd have to invest?

That would be 1.5k? Heh, anyway, you could get a hell of a build for 1500-2000. 2500k OC'd + SLI 580s will probably come close to maxing BF3.

But I dunno, it's hard to recommend spending $800+ on two 580s when new GPUs might be a two months away.

Not sure I can really recommend any specific components and still maintain a good balance/value with that budget. I find it easier to build something cheaper, ironically enough.

I don't think it would be worth the near-$400 upgrade unless you just happen to play a ton of CPU-heavy games. And only pretty new games are going to be optimized for 4+ cores since quads have only recently become mainstream.

Edit: Although getting an AMD quad core wouldn't cost all that much, 955s are like $120 now? I still wouldn't expect to see a performance boost worth the cash in the vast majority of games.

No such thing as too much playa.

If you want to be well prepared though start at the 1K build in the OP.

I bought this baby for BF3.

it's the Geforce 570 GTX Phantom which is ultra silent yet with great performance.

Recommended.

Gaf, why does my Asus HD Radeon 6950 card only come with display ports and DVI connectors? I was shocked that there was no HDMI output so I ended up using the DVI-HDMI converter that came with the card. My monitor doesn't have a display port output so should I return the card or just stick with it?

What is the exact model of 6950.

As far as I know all 6950s have an hdmi out.

I'm looking at the P67 Extreme4 Gen 3. I was going Z68 but then I realized I have no use for any of the Z68 features. The rest of the board is 1 to 1.

I belive the Asus Gen3 boards are having some issues. I haven't heary anything bad of the Asrock's.

How do I swap from a graphics card to the integrated graphics of my sandy bridge cpu?

I had to take the card out to RMA it, and literally that is all I have done. I do get a display, but my nvidia drivers are still installed, and I cant change the resolution.

Are there drivers for intel graphics?

Really would appreciate some guidance, as my googling skills are lacking in this area.

Edit: Actually, I think I am stumbling my way through it. :P

Just stick with the DVI-HDMI converter, it won't make any difference in your usage.

That is weird. If you ever need the Hdmi output for say your HDTV. Get a Display port to hdmi cable.

Will that adapter even work? Maybe they changed something in the newer cards, but I had to get a powered display port to dvi converter to work with my 5850

Wow, I wasn't aware Gainward was still in business. Their cards were awesome years ago. Although they were definitely known for being overpriced/expensive.
