See if its related to this. Intels SSDs have had issues with data loss.

Just to clarify when you say you can't locate it from your files do you mean 20gb of data is taken up but you can't see what files are taking it up or your 80GB ssd is showing up as 60gb.

It's probably being used for paging files and/or for sleep/hibernation.

I connected my monitor (ASUS VG236HE) to my brothers computer(GTX 260) through DVI but when he tries to use the 120hz mode the text turns blurry. The monitors own menu is unaffected but all text is blurry. He played some TF2 and the ingame text was blurry too. I'm not entirely sure if the rest of the picture was slightly blurred since I'm used to 1366x768. Has anyone had this happened to them? I found people with similar problems by googling (albeit with different monitors and GPUs) but no solutions.

I have correctly reset my CMOS using the pin method on the mobo, but my pc keeps turning off after a few seconds.

Suggestions?
Unplug everything but ram/vid card (maybe you don't even need a vid card if your cpu has onboard). But anyway, if you have another PSU to test try that.

So PC-GAF, I've been mulling over building a gaming for months and am just about set to jump in. I've got everything else sorted apart from finalising the graphics card I think.

The Radeon 6870 looks to be the best price to performance ratio as far as I can see, and I can currently pick one up for £125 GBP with Deus-Ex and Dirt 3 free. But I honestly don't want to pay over £100 for a GPU so I've been looking at where I can sacrifice. I'm quite happy compromising resolution for better everything else, in fact I'd almost rather do so as I don't want to find it impossible to go back and forth from console gaming after being spoiled by present day PC IQ ;)

So the question is; how much everything else would I gain from playing at 1280x720? What other ATI series card would give me about the same FPS, graphical bells and whistles etc. performance at 720p as say a 6870 at 1080p?

Cheers in advance for any input.

20GB of lost files, or unused space? I'm assuming unused space.

Have you upgraded the fw on that drive? You might want to use Windows to make an image backup of the drive. Update the fw if need be. Secure erase it. Then restore the image.

@RainyDog You want to spoil yourself with PC gaming. Always best to stay within your budget, but why upgrade if not to blow your dated console out of the water?

This is just my opinion, but the biggest PQ bump with PCs is the move from 1080p from 720p. It provides a lot of "free" anit-aliasing, and your textures will never be worse than consoles.

What is the resolution of your monitor?

Playing at anything than native resolution is a huge drop in IQ, not worth the money you could save.

Just to be clear, how did you figure you are missing 20gb? Did you disable paging file and sleep/hibernation. Did you get the space back?

There's lots of areas to trim in a gaming PC. I don't know if I'd trim the GPU.

Though if you are buying a monitor look for a 1680x1050 monitor. I have one and that resolution still looks great and gives a ~20% fps boost in most games compared to the 1920x1080.

So I am finally upgrading. I spend the majority of my time trying to choose the case. I'm getting the Nvidia Limited CM690 Advanced. Holy shit, buy.com is the only decent place that I could find the damn 80mm slim fans to go in it.

Thanks for the answers, but I don't really need temp sensors as I'll just be using it to drive and control some or all of my case fans, not the GPU and CPU fans.

I think I'll just buy two or three of these.

So I am thinking about upgrading my graphics card in preparation for Battlefield 3.

I need to know how much I could be spending (in £/pounds) on a good graphics card and also if it is worth upgrading my motherboard so I could use crossfire.

I currently have a 5770 by because my motherboard is quite small it seems I won't be able to fit another graphics card next to the current one.

My Current Specs:
CPU: Q8300 - Intel Core 2 Quad - 2.5 GHz
RAM: 4 GB - (How do I find out if it is DDR2 or DDR3? I bought it in June/July 2010)
Motherboard: Asus P5G41T-M LX2 Series
Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (1080p)

I'd be hooking it up to the telly. 47" native 1080p. I'll probably just go with the 6870 deal, is a good £75 less than the tier above and only £10-20 more than a 6790 below.

Another thing I'd been pondering over is the PSU. Is 500w+ definitely necessary for an ATI 6870, AMD PII x4 955 CPU plus one HD and DVD drive, or could I get away with 380w? I have a spare Antec EarthWatts 380w I could use if so.

You dont HAVE to use the temp sensors, if you leave them unplugged it just doesn't show anything below the RPMs. Its a lot nicer having a readout of rpms and controls on the front not wasting 4 PCI slots.

Upgrading your GPU should be enough to play medium, get a 560Ti or 6950. When you want to step up on the CPU side get a new motherboard and then think about SLI/Crossfire.

New hyper 212. I'm glad I noticed this was coming out next week. Would have been miffed to get the regular one this week, just to see this available the next.

The fan seems to be a Xtraflo, but cannot find any available to purchase :sadface

If you really want buy the 212+ and put this 6000rpm fan on it.

hmmmm Delta fans ... when I was young (and stupid) I had a case with a 3000 rpm 120 in the top, 3000 rpm 80mm in front and two of those 4000+ rpm 60 mm screamers in the back.

I'd throw it out the window if I would hear it nowadays, considering that my 5400 Samsung HDDs are currently the only thing audible in my rig

I assume you mean the CM 690 II. But in that case what 80mm slim fans? It's all 120 / 140 mm (front, bottom, top, back, sidepanel). Unless you're talking about that 1 spot on the back behind the motherboard which you should ignore. Especially because you want to route your cables there.

The VGA bracket it comes with has a slot for a fan on it as well. And I like that the case does not have a side vent other than behind the mobo.

forget about that thing as well imho, and I taped up the one behind the mobo :p

was much more efficient for mine to put a 120mm on the motherboard side of the HDD tray blowing directly under the card :) [wont fit with a second sli card if they're 480/580 sized)

i'm buliding my new setup with the silverstone raven rv02 and a corsair hydro h80. Because of the peculiarities of the raven I'm not sure how to setup the fans.

According to corsair, I should put the fans blowing outside air into the radiator. But the way the case is designed, the bottom fans will blow in cool air and the top fan (where I was supposed to put the radiator) would blow hot air out.

Does anyone have a similar setup?

yeah do it like that, the rv02 has more than enough airflow from the bottom fans so it will do fine :)

outside air through radiator could shave a degree or two/three of the temps (delta between air in and out of my case is 4c according to my controller) but the reality is that there are almost no cases whatsoever designed to have an intake at the positions you can install the H80 (back or top panel usually). In the case of an rv02 it's even more or less impossible unless you flip the bottom fans, and even then it doesn't make any sense as hot air rises, which is why intakes on cases are always low (front) and the outtakes are high (back)

Yeah, it's an XtraFlo. They've been using it for a while on the V6GT, and on newer HSFs like the Hyper 612 S/Hyper 612 PWM and GeminII S524, but it's still not widely available for purchase.

HSF: Hyper 212 + ............................. Hyper 212 Evo
MSRP: $29.99 ................................... $34.99
Fan: Blade Master ............................. XtraFlo
Benefit: Higher Static Pressure ........... Higher CFM

Newegg's video walk through does a good job of showing the changes made to the new, tightly-packed direct touch heat pipe base, but I'm not sure how Cooler Master got a patent on that, as they aren't the first to use that gap-less arrangement. Shame they couldn't do a full reworking, and use the Hyper 612's simplified mounting mechanism.

At $35, the Hyper 212 Evo has the same problem that the $50 Hyper 612 S/PWM face: the $40 Thermalright HR-02 Macho, the $40 Scythe Mugen 2 (or Mugen 3, though M2 and M3 perform virtually the same), and the Corsair A70 (when it's $40, or lower, though prices frequently jump higher). While it may be a bit bulkier than a Hyper 212, and stripped down from the bog standard HR-02, the Macho is offset (to clear the majority of ram height conflicts), and has one of the best fans on sale anywhere. It would be very difficult for the 212+/212 Evo/612 S/612 PWM to cool as well as the HR-02 Macho, while remaining as quiet.

I believe the 80mm GPU fan is standard thickness, but, even with a tightly packed multi-card build, you'd be better served using a 120/140mm fan on the side panel, and/or HDD cage.

If you're referring to the slim 80x15 motherboard fan placement, don't bother. The added noise wouldn't be worth the marginal cooling you'd get from placing a fan there.

scogoth said:

I know you're kidding, but that fan (like most Deltas, San Aces, etc.) is way, way beyond the cooling capacity of the Hyper 212.

So, is this Intel driver update only for folks that don't have dedicated GPU's?
Laptops, desktops, and portables can all benefit from it, particularly those that use switchable graphics, or exclusive iGPU output. There's an HDMI bug that it claims to fix.

Unfortunately, your CPU and motherboard are not a good match. In addition, either one of them is going to hold you back, with the board being the biggest hindrance. Not sure your CPU's OC ability warrants the additional investment of another 775 board. The relatively high CPU bus, combined with the low multiplier, an motherboard bus support may leave pin modding off the table for you.

Try seeing how the game runs on your rig, along with your settings, and resolution first, to see what may be the best course of action to take.

Seriously, it's OCZ. They had a chance to redeem themselves with the Vertex 3. They did not. They continue to push out poor products with dishonest practices.

Wife just gave me the go ahead. It is time...

Also, what the fuck at ebay. Checked things out there to see if I could save a bit, pretty much everything there is "buy it now" with prices pretty well what you would pay on newegg. What a shit hole that place has turned to.

EDIT: Also. Need some suggestions for a good monitor. $200ish. 1080p. Thanks.

Well I finally got my funds collected together and I'm probably gonna order all my parts tonight or tomorrow. Just checking in to see if anyone sees and glaring problems or other things I may need.

I'm assuming I should buy some good paste for the Cpu cooler, I remember a post not too long ago saying the included stuff with the Hyper 212+ wasn't great. I guess that Arctic Silver kind. Any other smaller things that may be handy?

The closer I'm getting the more my mood is swinging from excitement to nervousness :lol.

Build:
Mobo: Biostar TZ68A+
CPu: i5 2500k/ Hyper 212+
SSD: Crucial M4 64Gb
Case: Cm 690 II
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro M700
HD: Samsung F3 1TB
Ram: G skill Sniper 8gb
GPU: EVGA Superclocked GTX570
And the recommended Asus Optical Drive.

Total before tax, shipping etc is $1150.

Thanks again for all the help PCGaf. Lookin forward to my first build, wish me luck.

Heaven maxed out, at stock 832mhz clock. With one I got 31-33fps and that was overclocked to 900mhz+. During benchmark GPU 1 (top) had a temp of 65c, GPU2 59c. Sitting idle at 41c and 38c respectively.

Really digging the look of the Lightnings. Pics don't do it justice. The black and blue looks sweet with the rest of the system. I'll say with my custom profile fan I have, when these bad boys were running Heaven it was pretty loud. But in a sexy way lol

. Knew it was putting in work :).

So they are in and good to go. Haven't hooked up the 3d kit yet. Took more effort than I thought to get it plugged up and the wiring to look ok.

Anyway just wanted to throw a couple of pics up as I was asked to do so when I got the stuff in.

My god. You have no idea how jealous I am right now. I'm currently running a HD 6950 and planning to buy another one for crossfire, but damn do you have one heavenly rig.

Well I never thought it'd happen to me but I'm almost out of PCI slots. Thought 8 in the case would do it but just got a sound card today and have one PCI slot left =(

On the plus side I am now a believer in ASUS Xonar sound cards, noticeably better then on board.

I have no idea if this is the right thread for this so apologies in advance.
A friend recently used my pc and ended up installing some sort of toolbar named retype. I ran spybot and removed it but now my PC keeps getting the blue screen crash. Could it be related? If yes, any idea on how to fix this?

So I'm building my PC. Connecting everything, but I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong :/ I THINK I have all the connections right. Click the power button but nothing happens. What's the best way to get to the problem. Thanks for any help in advance. This has really been a trial on my patience. Mostly because I've had a killer headache all day, should have left this for tomorrow lol.
