Well I never thought it'd happen to me but I'm almost out of PCI slots. Thought 8 in the case would do it but just got a sound card today and have one PCI slot left =(

On the plus side I am now a believer in ASUS Xonar sound cards, noticeably better then on board.

I have a ASUS Xonar Essence STX. It's great but I'm sure their lower-priced cards are much more worth the money.

So I'm building my PC. Connecting everything, but I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong :/ I THINK I have all the connections right. Click the power button but nothing happens. What's the best way to get to the problem. Thanks for any help in advance. This has really been a trial on my patience. Mostly because I've had a killer headache all day, should have left this for tomorrow lol.
Manually trace all connections to ensure they are in. Plug and replug them.
Take out everything not needed (HDD,DVD). 1 stick of RAM. Try to power on.

If still failing assemble outside case with bare minimum as above.

Check if your power supply has a switch on it as well.

Do you have the standoff studs in properly between your motherboard and your case?

Yeah check this, check for a lose screw on or under the mobo, also check that your mobo is not resting on a standoff stud where there is no screw hole, double check that your using the right power header pins for your cases power switch, try only one memory stick, switch sticks etc, also check that you have the extra power connector plugged in.

Does the mobo not have any led's on it?

ugh...jellyious. Smokey what in the F do you do for a living?

I work :)

Messed around with some games. Witcher 2 I was getting like 140 fps (inside some prison) with everything except Uber. Crysis 2 was around 75fps (Ultra etc etc). Not like I was expecting any less but it's cool to just turn up everything and not worry about performance issues!

SLI vets any tips for a newbie?

Sorry for the late response guys, I took it out completely of the case and to try testing it out here. I think I may have gotten a bit over my head honestly. :) So please bare with me, as this is my first time doing this and some of the terms are a little alien to me. I should have done more research, but I got a little excited and jumped to it. So this is where I am right now:

I have the motherboard outside with a ram stick, cpu, and the hyper 212.
I have the power supply connected to the ATXPWR 1 and ATXPWR2 slots on the motherboard.

What should be my next move if I just want to test it outside of my case?

There are On-Board LED indicators, but I wasn't seeing them turn on.

You need ram, CPU, mobo and PSU to post, so if your PSU is fully connected I would turn it on with the motherboard sitting on the box it came in. See if the LEDs light and then you can assume it was something else.

So should the two power plugs be all I need? If so, the LEDs are not doing anything. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

IIRC... You need the 24 pin power connected (middle right-hand side), the 8 pin (which will be the top left-hand side of the mobo), and the CPU fan power which goes from the CPU to right above it (no PSU involved).

Is the power supply switch on I instead of O?
Is it plugged into the wall?
Is your power strip on?

You should have a 24 main connector and a 4 or 8 pin motherboard power connector.

Well I have the 24 pin and the 8 pin connected, both coming from the PSU. I don't see one for the CPU though. Hm..

Turn it on via shorting the two power pins on the bottom right. Or your mobo might have a dedicated power button. Once you attach power the LED on the mobo should light up.

You can also short the PSU to test the fan and see if that is the issue.

140fps in Witcher 2? That is without vsync correct? If you have not done so, check out the witcher 2 thread. There are some setttings in the .ini file that will improve the game even more, expecially with distant objects appearing and otehr stuff. Especially with the added memory we have on our cards you can increase some other stuff as well.

Yes, the glory of 2 SLI 580's is that you can turn up everyting in every game and still get 60fps. If you have Metro2033 do the benchmark with everything maxed and see what you get.

I'm going out on a limb and say I was connecting my motherboard to the case wrong. Hm, I read the manual and I thought I connected it right.

Yah that was the highest I saw it get. Again it was in a prison though so that probably had something to do with it. Completely forgot about Metro. Need to get it. Heard it's really good in 3D too.

Start a new game, step out of the tent, and then, look at the camp below. That should give you a good idea of the frame rate.

Its it worth to buy a new GPU now, or should I hold for the next gen?

Current system:
4GB DDR3 1600.
i7 2600k
GTX 280.

Oh read it wrong.

Depends. You could get a 560 which would be a nice, bang for your buck upgrade. The Nvidia next-gen cards are q1-q2 2012.

There should be some golden standoffs that you screw into the case first. After those are connected, you sit the motherboard on top of them and put screws through the motherboard and into those standoffs.

Question for anyone with the HAF 912. How exactly do I put the DVD drive in? Am I supposed to use the little bracket things like the hard drive, or is it just supposed to slide in?

I'm building my computer now, and I'm having the same problem. When I turn it on, the power on LED in the front of the case lights up, but nothing else happens. I've been unplugging stuff, plugging it back in, and trying to power it up again, but nothing's happening.

I got a 2500k, and I overclocked it to 4.2 GHz. When it idles it's around 32-34 C, but after a few minutes of IntelBurn it went up to 75-80C. I'm guessing I should reapply thermal paste, right?

I'm using a Hyper 212+.

Thermal paste usually takes a few days to spread correctly and function as it should, I remember that about a week after installing my 2500k temps were reduced by around 5 degrees.

Use one of the apps in the OP. Intel Burn is almost meant to kill things imo.
Also probably look at reapplying.

So the dvd drive not going in is my last problem, or I hope so. It just won't slide in completely. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzHt7u2kThE I have the exact same dvd drive and case and it just won't slide in like it does in that video. Not sure what I'm missing. :c
You might have to take off the front of the case or toggle / undo some kind of latch on either side of the case?

The front is off, the latch is on open instead of lock, it just won't slide in. I've been rewatching the video and his just slides in, mine gets stuck. I don't want to force it and break it by accident.

This is getting really frustrating. I don't see anything blocking the entrance of the dvd drive. I've tried all 4 slots, they all get stuck. The manual doesn't really help here. :( I just want to finish already arghhh.

What sort of method does the case use to hold the drive in place? Screws or is it plastic auto clamps?

I'll help you get it done - you got steam?

Sorry, I closed it up. I have a 7:45 class tomorrow so I'm just going to leave it until tomorrow after my classes. Thanks for your help though, really appreciate it. :) The owner of the video also responded on his method to slide it in, hopefully that will work tomorrow if not, I'll post here again and see what happens.

i5 2500k 3.4 (plan to OC to 4.5)

Corsair PSU 850

Is that wattage too low?

No, you're good. Just won't be able to add another 590 in the future with that PSU.

It was brought to my attention in the benchmark thread that my RAM is running slower than it should be? How can I go about fixing this and making sure it's running correctly?

My RAM is rated @ 1600. Shouldn't it read 800mhz?

My PC still won't turn on (except for the case LED) and I'm getting frustrated. I've tried all the methods suggested. Here's a picture of my build (yeah, the cables are messy):

You'll notice the top plug where the power is also supposed to go is currently empty. That's because I have these two remaining plugs coming out of my PSU:

pc02.jpg

pc03.jpg

...and I'm not sure which one belongs there. I've tried both, but haven't had any luck.

So...sort of goes in this thread I guess.

PC building will probably be over winter break for me, or when new CPUs (Ivy Bridge)/GPUs (Nvidia?) release in 2012.

But! I will probably upgrade my MBP to 8GB of RAM over Thanksgiving (from 4GB) and I may try and overclock the GPU and/or CPU while I'm at it. Not sure how smart that will be, considering that it will probably affect the battery life (and temperatures), but I may as well be a little adventurous if I'm going to open up the thing anyway.

Rumor has it Nvidia will be releasing a new card just before Battlefield 3. Since they are promoting it with Lan Parties at all.

Speculation is a 28nm Fermi, not Kepler.

Mine if thats the case.

is motherboard power

the other (6+2) goes into your graphics card

Thanks guys, that's good to know. The PC still won't turn on, though.

Question about the 6+2: the 6 part goes into the graphics card just fine, but the +2 doesn't fit anywhere. Also, my graphics card (GTX560 Ti) has two of the 6-hole outlets on it. Do I need to connect an additional cable from that to my PSU?

I decided to go with this version of the 506 Ti. My only issue is that it seems to be the only 560 TI that isn't part of the Batman: Arkham City nVidia promo. On other sites like Newegg it is though. There is another SKU on Amazon of the exact same card without the lifetime warranty that is part of the promo. Frustrating.

Would be freaking awesome otherwise I'm gonna have to skipout on the launch of BF3 then.

You don't need the +2 if your card only has holes for 6 pins. But you do need two 6-pin cables attached for it to work.
