Good day folks. My roommate has asked me to help him build a computer and gave me a budget of $3500 to do so with. I convinced him it was much more worth his while to limit himself to $1500-$2000 or so rather than to spend an excessive amount on minimal performance increases. We are building the entire thing from scratch, so everything has to be included. Keyboard, mouse and speakers he has already, but the rest needs to come from this purchase.
Note that he specifically said he did not want a large hard drive inside, as he uses multiple externals to hold the majority of his files for transfer between his laptops and now the new desktop. I disagreed with him, said that while he should consider an SSD for the OS and critical programs, he should still consider having a 2TB drive or so in the tower for his files as it would likely be faster than running off an external, but he was fairly insistent. I suppose we can always add an internal storage solution later, though I still do not like the idea when it would only cost say $80 to do it now as I can almost guarantee he would end up using it, but whatever.
Anyway, here is what I have put together for the build, anyone with recommendations on pieces to swap out and a reason why would be greatly appreciated:
Case: Coolermaster HAF 912 $59.98
PSU: Corsair TX750 V2 $104.97
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD55 $159.99
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K @3.4 $314.97
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB model CML8GX3M2A1600C9B $80.83
Storage: OCZ Solid 3 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 SandForce SF-2281 SSD $162.98
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit $99.97
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 DS Superclocked 1536 MB $474.97
Disk Drive: ASUS DRW-24B1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer OEM Black $19.97
Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus $27.25
Monitor: Samsung E2220X 21.5IN LCD Monitor 1080p $127.99 (he did not want larger than a 22 inch, even if the resolution is only 1080p. I suggested going up to 24-26 inch and 2500x1600 resolution, but he said it wasnt necessary)
Grand total is $1634 CDN with free shipping, everything bought from NCIX (price matched from tigerdirect.ca when available)
So...does that look like a solid enough choice and have the GAF seal of approval, or am I overlooking something obvious that I could get a better deal or better piece of equipment?
Performance-wise for games, I am assuming this is going to pretty much crush just about everything coming out in the next little while, correct? No need for SLI cards or anything of that nature?
