Right. I do like it to run cool, which is why I got the big ass fan to go on the side. We'll see how Battlefield 3 goes for me before I do any overclocking. Thanks for answering my questions.

Anytime.

For what it's worth I got 90~ fps on metro park area ( the slower part of the metro map ) with ultra settings and 1080p with a my similar rig.

does anyone else's pc get dusty as hell

i just upgraded my ram and gpu's recently and the dust was everywhere, i cleaned up as much
as i could with a cloth and even my finger in the hard to reach places, but i'd rather prevent it to avoid this mess again
Almost everybody's PC gets dusty, the only option is to clean it up regularly as far as I know.

I'm still working on cooling and overclocking my new i5-2500k. I removed the thermal paste that was originally put on the cpu and put on some MX-4. Temps dropped a couple of degrees but I still think it should be cooler.

One friend told me that maybe the H60's fan was mounted the wrong way. He says when I put my hand on the back of the computer I should feel the fan pulling in air - is that correct? Right now, I feel the fan is blowing the air out of the case.

I'm at a place where I am either going to just give up and enjoy the performance I have (which is great overall) or I might consider getting a 212+ and changing out the cooler completely.

I have some pics of the system here: http://tonnercyn.imgur.com . If anyone would look at that and tell me if they see any obvious problems I would appreciate it. Also, does it look like I have room for a Hyper 212+ with 2 fans?

The beta has some fluctuations since its well.. still a beta. but I think you should do more then fine

It's never a good idea to screw with the unknown just for "but I could be getting this".

Edit: nvm, post was too long.

Quick question: my current PC is FUBAR'd (Q6600, 4870 X2), so I'm building my new PC a few months early.

Do you guys think I should get a nVidia GTX 570 now alongside an i5 2500K, or should I wait for the new range of GPUs and recycle my 4870 X2 for a few months?

Recycle that 4870X2. Upgrading to a 7970/7950 Radeon will blow your mind.

I would be more than happy to have some people tell me to just leave things alone. I just thought it odd that my system would run 10-20 hotter than other people's who have the same cpu, cooler, and gpu. And that wasn't even trying anything too crazy - I was just going for 4.0 ghz...

Should be fine. 40A on 1 single 12v rail. Although I'd go with the TX650 V2 for more upgrade room in the future.

I ended up buying the TX650 V2 a couple of hours ago. $69.99 after $15 rebate. Thanks!

Good day folks. My roommate has asked me to help him build a computer and gave me a budget of $3500 to do so with. I convinced him it was much more worth his while to limit himself to $1500-$2000 or so rather than to spend an excessive amount on minimal performance increases. We are building the entire thing from scratch, so everything has to be included. Keyboard, mouse and speakers he has already, but the rest needs to come from this purchase.

Note that he specifically said he did not want a large hard drive inside, as he uses multiple externals to hold the majority of his files for transfer between his laptops and now the new desktop. I disagreed with him, said that while he should consider an SSD for the OS and critical programs, he should still consider having a 2TB drive or so in the tower for his files as it would likely be faster than running off an external, but he was fairly insistent. I suppose we can always add an internal storage solution later, though I still do not like the idea when it would only cost say $80 to do it now as I can almost guarantee he would end up using it, but whatever.

Anyway, here is what I have put together for the build, anyone with recommendations on pieces to swap out and a reason why would be greatly appreciated:

Case: Coolermaster HAF 912 $59.98
PSU: Corsair TX750 V2 $104.97
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD55 $159.99
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K @3.4 $314.97
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB model CML8GX3M2A1600C9B $80.83
Storage: OCZ Solid 3 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 SandForce SF-2281 SSD $162.98
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit $99.97
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 DS Superclocked 1536 MB $474.97
Disk Drive: ASUS DRW-24B1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer OEM Black $19.97
Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus $27.25
Monitor: Samsung E2220X 21.5IN LCD Monitor 1080p $127.99 (he did not want larger than a 22 inch, even if the resolution is only 1080p. I suggested going up to 24-26 inch and 2500x1600 resolution, but he said it wasnt necessary)

Grand total is $1634 CDN with free shipping, everything bought from NCIX (price matched from tigerdirect.ca when available)

So...does that look like a solid enough choice and have the GAF seal of approval, or am I overlooking something obvious that I could get a better deal or better piece of equipment?

Performance-wise for games, I am assuming this is going to pretty much crush just about everything coming out in the next little while, correct? No need for SLI cards or anything of that nature?

I currently have a 9800GTX+ videocard in my PC and it's becoming my weakest link. I will received a good amount of money soon and would like to upgrade my videocard. What would be a good videocard to buy, I'm willing to put about 300$ on one.

My computer has a quad-core CPU and 4 GB or RAM.

looks great, but I would suggest dropping that i7 down to an i5 2500k, since the hyper threading is only really needed for video encoding and other intensive applications (games don't really use it. Also does he realize he will need space to install his games to? Tell him to just throw a 500gig secondary drive in at least, cant fit much on a 120gb ssd with an os already on it. And yes this pc will rock games for quite a while

The OCZ Solid 3 is the SandForce controller (with the BSOD issue that, while rare, may still be unresolved) paired with the cheapest NAND. I'd definitely consider spending a little more on something like the Crucial M4. Samsung's new 830 also seems to be quite a good choice, as it's performance is competitive and their previous OEM offering seem to be quite reliable.

I made the same suggestion with regards to the secondary drive, that he have one in there regardless, but he says that he just intends to use his two externals, as that is how he has things set up currently with his laptop which only has 80GB of storage and basically has his OS, Microsoft Office, WoW and some music on it. If necessary an internal drive can always be added later I suppose, but he seems fairly adamant that he likes to have the ability to switch those files between his laptops and desktop at whim, and really the end decision is up to him anyway.

I have switched the SSD to a Crucial M4 SSD Micron C400 128GB for $204.97, which is what is actually suggested in the OP and as gokieks has just responded. Other than that, things look good to you guys?

He said he wants the i7, does not mind paying the extra 60 bucks or so for it over the i5, so I am leaving that in.

Picked up my new (temporary) Corsair GS700 PSU while I wait for Newegg to process my RMA. I'm posting this from my new computer, which is a good sign! So far everything seems normal. Just installing drivers, updates etc. Very happy it appears everything is working without issues!

My recent order messed up and I was sent (and charged) 4xVengeance 4GB DDR3 ram sticks. I'm pretty sure my set up won't benefit much from 8GB to 16GB, so think I will just send 2 back for a refund. I do a bit of 3dmax and PhotoShop, but nothing over the top. You think 16gb is a waste?

Unless the handful of times you run those programs involve really big files, with both apps running at the same time, you'll probably not see any real benefit.

Battery was low on my phone so no flash, but I'll take some better pics soon.

Can anyone recommend a codec cleaner/codec pack I could get?

I'm having problems streaming from my PC to my PS3, and I'm thinking that might be the problem.

ddr3 ram is as cheap as it gets, keep the 16gb, granted you are on windows 7pro, even thought windows 7hp 64bit is still limited to a total of 16gb, dont know if windows 8hp will change that. but i will keep the 16gb anyway.

Question. I was playing the bf3 demo the other day and all of a sudden, my screen split in half vartically, with the left and right side switching places T_T. Stayed stuck like that even when I exited the game so I had to do a restart. Is this because I oc'ed my 6970? I don't even think I have it overclocked that high (930/1425)

Without 3D yes on smaller maps with a very good CPU.
With 3D you need 120fps in 2D, so yeah, good luck with that.

Eh, if he has money just let him SLi 3GB GTX580's. Super overkill for 1080p, but he'll be set who a long time. A single 3GB 580 should be fine.
I'd up the PSU to an AX850/X850 or 1000W though just in case. Better quality too.
As mentioned change the SSD. i7 is fine.

Unplug and replug all connectors. Check behind mobo for loose screws.
Run memtest 86+

Download MPC-HC and try to clean off your old codecs.
If that doesn't work I know a lot of people use the CCCP, but I've heard there's some bloat to that. Never had any problems.

Put clocks back and find out. Install the new BF3 drivers too.

Smokey has an expensive mobo so he can actually just plug it in there and be fine unless he thinks he's an audiophile.

I got another fan for PUSH/Pull on my 212+. However, it's a 4pin and the 2nd CPU pin on my Mobo is a 3pin.

HOw do I setup the second fan so that both run at the same speed?

Hazaro you mean to do all that in one or those are 3 different options? Also behind the mobo you mean the screws on the stan offs?
First 2, then memtest 86+

A $40 one is just fine, forget some of their names.
$80 if you want best, forget their names too.

The D14 is the popular choice for $80, with the cm 212+ for cheaper. Both are great, but you will need to make sure your case fits the d14. As well as making sure your ram isn't too tall.

At work right now, wishing I was home finishing up the new build. The Nvidia case is sweet. Last night I was replacing all the fans with green ones and installing the green led strobe kit. Picked up green sata cables. This is even tackier than my first build that had this Hideous Case

Holy shit....looking at that same order, I paid $458 for a 4400+ cpu....

Thinking about getting a Das Keyboard after hearing Gaf and a friend mention them a few times but I have a few questions:

Would the normal one be too loud in a flat? Is it loud enough to annoy the person in the next room?

Im going to be using it for both coding and gaming, I have read that is is great for typing/coding but how about gaming?

I have been watching videos and reading reviews but still can't make my mind up.

Also I am in the UK so I am trying to find a good place to buy it, any recommendation?
