Nope. The difference is even smaller than different clocks which is already tiny to begin with.

Thanks for answering, that saves me some money. I edited my post to reflect that I've found a new solution. Does that build look solid?

MOTHERFUCKER

I don't think my FT02 case is going to play nice with my Lightnings. The temps on my top card are much higher than the bottom. I just finished playing The Witcher 2 and the top card was at 94c, and the bottom was at 79. These cards blow air back into the case rather than exhausting out of the back like the reference cards. So I'm guessing the air is getting dumped back into my case and the fans at the bottom of the FT02 are blowing the air back into the cards (my mobo sits at a 90 degree angle). This is with a modest OC (by Lighting Extreme standards) of 910mhz.

Talk about a shitty way to start off the day :/

Couple questions about some things I see in this picture before I put my computer together. Don't you want the PSU fan facing downward into the vents built into the case? Also, shouldn't the CPU fan be facing the other direction? The box shows the fan blowing the other way and the case fan behind it blowing air out of the case. Which is better? Thanks for clearing this up for me.

My computer sits on a thick rug currently, I didn't think it would be a good idea to have the psu fan blowing down into it.

The cpu fan is on the other side now, the pic is from a test fit and power up.

i'm fairly new to pc gaming so when shit breaks i tend to either 1) google around until i find a fix or 2) get lazy and say fuck it. but since i actually have a free day i'll ask you guys a question. i bought Rock of Ages on Steam and played for a while and was loving it. i went to play it recently and got this message "failed to find default engine .ini. forcing quit". space language. i've seen talk of .ini files over the years but i don't know where they are or how to go about fixing this. help please. also i downloaded a demo on Steam for Just Cause 2 and it just stopped working. i think the dialog says that it's not available at this time, try again later. do Steam demos expire? i'm pretty sure they don't.

Outside of CPU-bound games, not particularly. OC the 955 to at least 3.4-3.6GHz, or 3.8-4.0GHz+, if possible.

I got another fan for PUSH/Pull on my 212+. However, it's a 4pin and the 2nd CPU pin on my Mobo is a 3pin.

HOw do I setup the second fan so that both run at the same speed?
anyone?
You need a PWM y-splitter, like this one. It's best if the fans are the same, or similar enough, such as RPM range.

Weird, I just mentioned at work that MicroCenter had those on sale near launch for $150.
Is it $170 even without the special sale still? Pffft.

Anyone buying a PC soon should go ahead and grab that if possible. In store only.
I don't recall that, actually. Too many sales to keep track of. I know they had some other ridiculous combo deal around launch.

Quoting again for the last day of the sale, and anyone who may have missed it:

Unfair.... in Germany i must pay this for a 2500k

184 Euro = 247,0016 US-Dollar

...

and the price for the MSI Geforce GTX 570?

280 Euro = 375,87200 US-Dollar

...

there is this deal in a shop next to where i live

coolermaster RC430 black
super power 550W??
asus p8p67le
i5 2500
8go pc3 10666 DDR3 1333 MHZ
1 TO sata III 6gb/s
gtx 560

=699€

so i know the hardrive, the memory and the PSU probably suck but the combo i5 2500 & gtx 560 seems sweet for this price

should I or shan't I?

thx

Yeah I got the same exact one as the default fan on the 212+ I'm hoping a radio shack has one. I don't want to wait :(

You can use a 4 pin connector to a 3 pin header just fine, but it'll just run at full speed instead of variable. If it's a decently quiet fan though, that doesn't matter much. I think I have both of my 120mm fans on the 212+ running at full speed all the time, and it's barely audible.

That's weird. When I crank up the fan on my 212+ to 100%, it's very much audible. Anything past 5 out of 10 on the speed setting seem to be highly audible. The case is HAF X sitting about 1.5ft away from me. Cranking up the case fans to 100% makes no additional noise so I know it's the 212+ fan.

Hey guys I've got an issue that might be software related but I don't know.

So while previewing pictures in windows 7, for example a screenshot from a game the colors and the general image quality looks horrendous as if it's been compressed to hell and back and had every contrast/color level messed with.

But if I upload said picture and just view it from the imagelink, the picture looks like it should, that is great. Anyone have the faintest idea what I'm talking about?

Here are a good PC in germany:
Core i5-2500K
Gigabyte GeForce GTX560-TI OC 1024 MB DDR5 HDCP
8GB-KIT DDR3 Corsair PC1333 CL
ASUS P8P67 R3, 1155,ATX, DDR3
be quiet! Pure Power 530W
Samsung EcoGreen F4 2000GB
Xigmatek Midgard
Scythe Katana 3

For 750€, only good components, a 560 TI OC, 2TB etc.

PSU is back. Its quieter than the previous ones but im still getting some noise.

Basically it boils down to this:

- Loud whine when fps go beyond 60 (have to use vsync on a lot of games)

- Loud whine when Turbo Boost kicks in (when it goes from 3.3 to 3.4ghz)

- Whine when using a web browser and scrolling and connecting a wireless 360 pad reciever. Had to disable C3 and C6 report for these particular noises to stop, but because of that now turbo boost goes to 3.4ghz tops instead of 3.7ghz, guess that's not TOO bad.

So far its been the same with 3 different PSUs, so i could rule those out (though part of the whines do come from there), but at the same time i dont think its either the GPU or the CPU considering they both have their own sound related issues going. Guess MOBO it is. Got a replacement for this same model and the issue continues, so could it be model related? (P8P67 LE).

Any other ideas? im already living with it and getting used to it (god bless headphones) but id like to avoid it if possible. Problem is that any sort of machinery is gonna make some electrical noise no matter what, and if you reach a point where you become obsessed nothing's gonna ever please you, haha.

yeah actually, it was not such a good deal and yours seems far better (even if French prices probably don't match exactly German ones)

thanks for the tip

Yeah, I have the same problem as you, I just use d3doverrider in all games. It really used to bother me, but as you say, with the combination of headphones, its not all that bad, and most games are vsynced anyway.

I don't get the web browser whine, but I don't turbo boost either. Too hard and too much effort to find the component making the noise to bother with RMA, but I assume that mine is the GPU.

I believe I have the same specs as you, 2500k and 560ti, if it makes any difference.

If the HAF X is as good as the HAF 932 you are going to be blown away by it.
I believe the X is essentially an upgraded 932, so I'd expect it to be at least as good.

I currently have a Dell UltraSharp 20.1" 2005FPW monitor... it's perhaps ~5 years old... not sure but it has been a while. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to a new monitor? Not too concerned with getting a larger one so are would I notice a difference in how the picture looks?

Specs:

Viewable Size: 20.1", Display Type: Flat Panel Display / Active Matrix TFT - Desktop

Color Support: 16.7 Million, Dimensions (WxDxH) / Weight: 18.6" x 9" x 15.3" to 22.4" / 17.64 lbs

Enclosure Color: Midnight Gray, Image Aspect Ratio: 16:10, Max Sync Rate (V x H): 75 Hz x 83 kHz

Image Brightness: 300 cd/m², Image Contrast Ratio: 600:1, Max Resolution: 1680x1050 Pixels

Port(s) Total ( Free ) / Connector Type: VGA / DVI-D / S-video / Composite / 4 x USB 2.0

Pretty awesome news. Turns out hyper 212 won't be fitting in my case if I put my 200mm fan on the side. Awesome. Glad newegg has a 30 day return policy. Have to pay like two bucks "restocking fee". Ordered a Hyper N520 that I hope works well.

Life lesson, make sure you read all the reviews as it was mentioned in one of the reviews for my case on newegg. Didn't notice until this morning.

That microcenter deal is just crazy. Glad I don't have one near me because if I did I'd be there now upgrading my rig.

Ivy Bridge and next gen GPUs need to just hurry up and come out so I can upgrade.

Yeah you need a better airflow setup. Think you need a new case!

I live pretty close to a Microcenter. Keeping myself away from this deal is difficult, but I'm getting great performance in BF3, so I've got to stay strong.

With my luck, BF3 will be more demanding in the retail game than it is in this beta.

so if i get the 560ti, should I also purchase a new PSU? I currently have a ocz 450w that's been running perfectly. Is there a need to upgrade that too?

This case was $200+. I refuse.

did you post on overclock.net about this?

just for fun, try turning your case 90 degrees (put something under it to protect the paint) and see what happens

not only can the airflow make a difference, but the actual 90 degree orientation may limit the cooling ability of certain (not all) videocard heatpipe style coolers like those on the Lightnings

I've heard about people seeing Accelero cooled cards going 90+ degrees because the heatpipes stopped working in a FT02/RV02

I'm looking into getting a GTX 580. Is the MSI Lightning (3GB) card worth the price of admission ($599)?

do you need 3GB? Answer is yes if you game at 2560*1440 resolution or with multiple 1080p+ monitors, but in those cases you'll also probably want to go SLI right away...

for regular 1080p gaming the 1.5GB version is fine

Won't the 3GB help make the card more future-proof, though?

If anyone is thinking of the coolermaster HAF-X, I can highly recommend it.
Such great airflow and plenty of USEFUL accessories.

For the moment yes but you will most likely find yourself upgrading to the 600 series when they arrive.
Such is the nature of PC gaming no matter how much you try to avoid it.

Bolded is what I'm wondering as well. So I'm getting this straight, you want me to basically put the case on it's face so that the cards will be horizontal? Cables will then be sticking straight in the air?

well, personally I'd say that looking at the state of consoles and their limits on most games/game engines these days I doubt 1.5GB is going to limit you any time soon

and by the time it will bottleneck performance a GTX580 will be outdated and inefficient anyway ;)

but that's just my personal opinion :)

1.5gb is good enough for 99% of anyone playing at 2560xXXXX at that. People are going to get limited by their gpu in general before they'll hit anything close to 1.5gb in practically any game out there.

you might want to unplug something first :P (I only have 3 cables going in my rig lol)

again, it shouldn't change much because airflow will be largely the same

if you see small gains it could be because of airflow

if you see big gains it *might* be an issue with the 90 degree orientation itself

---

personally, it's not that I don't believe the "wrong airflow" theory, but with those 180mm pushing air to the top between the cards and the ventilated slots of the 580s I would be kinda surprised if that much hot air would continue to stick around ... hell open the sidepanel and aim a table fan at the cards, see what that does to temperatures

I'm thinking it's because the cards dump the air into the case, and then the 180mm fans are blowing and therefor pushing that hot air right back on the cards. I will try the open panel test first before I put my machine on it's face lol

Turn it so that it's on it's back...the video cards should be in the same orientation they'd be if they were in a regular case. (I believe you'd need to take the cable shroud off to actually lay it like that)
