I've had one since the 970's came out.

No problems here, it's been a great card.

Don't think you can go wrong in buying one.

It has support for long GPU's, HDD/SDD space for expansion that you want although the SDD mounting is not that great from looking at the above review. Building in this also seems like it could be a bit annoying because it doesn't have that many cutouts for routing cables like the CPU one.

ASRock Extreme Tuning Utility (AXTU) looks decent and can be used for fan control btw. Will probably be easier than speedfan and work better maybe.

The side fan mounts in your picture are mainly for the HDD/SDD cage but if fans are installed there than it becomes more limiting in terms of space to keep your cables. It has two mounts for fans in the front with one fan included with the case.

First of all thanks for the reply! :) Well the other cases I had in mind were a Zalman Z9 Plus and the Corsair Carbide 200R. And alright watching your video, that makes the N400 look really undesirable which is a shame since I like many things about it. Starting with the plentiful HDD slots, the removable front-plate without cables attached to it, the dust-filters, 4x USB and the general design. But yeah I for once want to own a case for myself where I don't feel like I need dwarf hands or completely dismantle the PC to clean it.

And I would really like to have proper airflow for ones so my 7970 also sticks closer to 70°C in summer and not only in winter :p And thanks for the hint about AXTU, will look into it too once I have a new case, I guess I will postpone buying anything till next week and look on. I would have bought the N400 for 50€ flat at a local computer store. Also yeah the video made the unusual side fan-slots clear.

About three years ago I owned a NZXT Phantom for a week before I returned it. I really liked it before purchasing it but once I had it home... it was a dream to build with, so many space everywhere but in the end I returned it because somehow my build at that time ended up louder than than with the unmanaged iCurve, I had issues turning on my PC at first (my own dumbness, I didn't realize a power-cable was hitting the mainboard from behind :p) and ultimately it was just too big and flashy, fitting barely under my desk, let alone on my desk :/ Ever since then I just can't find anything that seems to be easy to manage and cool and quiet.

it's funny really, the builds I build for friends always end up great in that regard, one PC I build for a friend with a Thermaltake V3 case and a GIGABYTE GTX 660 ended up particularly amazing and I don't even know what I did special with it o.o He barely cleaned the PC in the two years now and there is minimal dust build-up inside, even during the most demanding games for a 660 he still swoons how grateful he is towards me because he can't even hear a fan unless he concentrates on it.

Based on that I would opt for a Thermaltake V3 too but since I have a bit more inside my PC and because a 7970 is a bit bigger and longer than a 660 I know it wouldn't end that well for me :p

**Sigh** I bought a GTX 970 to replace my 670 for The Witcher 3. Uninstalled the 670 from the system, swapped out the cards. Got the card seated correctly, plugged in the PCI-e power connectors. Everything's looking good.

When I start the PC the GPU fans kick on for boot up but stop the moment Windows loads. When I go to install new drivers it fails and won't install and the device manager reports two display adapters (there is not a video out on the mobo) one of which has a Code 10, device failed to initialize.

I struggled with it all last night tweaking BIOS settings, I didn't think to do a driver sweeper, but it fails in Safe Mode as well. So I don't think it's the drivers. Has anyone ever just gotten a defective GPU? Did anyone encounter this same problem?

(P.S. I don't know if this is the right thread to post this in, if it isn't then I accept my lashings. At any rate I just wanted to vent as well, so if no one has any advice that's fine, I feel a little better typing out my frustrations)

Maybe try disable the Intel HD graphics and make sure IRQ is assigned to your VGA slot in BIOS.

I saw the IRQ assignment fix on nVidia's site. I have that ASUS UEFI BIOS thing and can't figure out how to do that. There's no integrated graphics on the motherboard, though, so it shouldn't be that.

Oh yh I forgot to include your quote as well there :p. In terms of airflow it sounds like you want a positive to neutral airflow. I did look briefly at the corsair 200r it looks like a easier case to work with but is more limiting than the N400 in terms of HDD expansion but once your ready again we can have another look ;)

...but do you guys feel like future gaming will want more threads/cores vs faster per core performance (and less of them)?


I ask because my Phenom IIx4 is being given to my kids and I'll be getting an FX8350. Just curious if that CPU will actually perform better in today's games than it did when it first launched.

No problem! :) And thanks for all the help and the videos, sounds like I will go for a positive air-flow yeah since I live in a very dusty place under the roof. Since I have two spare fans aswell I might see if I manage a three-in two-out setup to maximize the airflow and keep the dust out. I really want to make the N400 work somehow as I love the sleek design but yeah I'll see. The Corsair 760T from the video looks phenomenal aswell but is sadly way out of my price-range :p

Really the only problem I have as far as cable-management goes, fan cables? No problem! SATA cables? Easy! PSU cables... please forgive me the pun but especially with my PSU I feel like I have a Japanese-style tentacle-monster inside my PC... :p Seriously through my old BeQuiet Straight Power Dual-Rail 550w from 2008 has so many SATA and Molex lines with all cables mantled thick that I don't know where to put them. And I don't really want to replace it either because it does its job perfectly while I saw many PSUs around me fail after 5 years, this one runs like on its first day :/

Also the reason why I postpone it to next week: Skyfireblaze's golden-rule of PC building: NEVER clean or change or build a PC on weekends or holidays, if you break something, you're screwed for days :p

What is it, that I need to go for, if I (as an example), want ultra settings in The Witcher III but also a very stable frame rate?

Right now I got:

- GeForce GTX 780
- Intel i5 4670K
- 16GB of RAM

I build it last April.

I haven't followed the PC scene for some years and I am working on a new build as well.

But with your i5 and ram, wouldn't you do fine with just a new GPU upgrade?

IIRC, the red has a custom PCB, whereas the blue one has the reference PCB. Of the three, the red is the most popular one. It's up there with the Gigabyte Gaming 970.

The red one also has the Twin Frozr cooler, which is the best cooler of the 3.

A GPU upgrade would suffice, I've got the same rig but with a 780ti and I play locked at 30fps / 1440, with all but a few settings at Ultra. 970/980 users seem to be pleased with their results in the PC thread. I'm personally waiting for the 980ti before making an upgrade.

Question about applying thermal paste. I've heard of lots of techniques, such as spreading it out with a plastic bag on your finger, using a credit card, and just putting a little bit on top of the processor and then putting the cooler on top to let pressure do it's job. What's the preferred method? I was thinking of just letting the pressure spread it out to avoid somehow screwing it up. Seemed like the easiest route too.

I'm by no means a expert but that's what I always did too and I never had trouble and it always seemed like the cleanest solution to me.

Just when I thought my system was stable again with my underclock, I had a hard crash while playing Witcher 3 and gave me a boot screen which says that my OC settings have failed. Managed to reset everything, but now I get this weird reference clock setting inside the Extreme Tuning Utility (which never appeared before).

Also, now the system occasionally flickers momentarily before booting properly during a reboot. That is, it'll light up, but turn back off... then reboot itself again. Do I have a PSU problem?

500W EVGA.

edit: I'll test it a few more times tonight to make sure I'm not overreacting on things. PSUs don't often fail like that, and chances are that it's some sort of in-rush current protection (or voltage sag protection) that's tripping.

This is probably a silly question but if a game or piece of software does not support Crossfire then a card like the Radeon 295X2 would be of little to no advantage over a single 290X, right? Or am I misunderstanding how these dual GPU cards work?

You're right. Except that I think the 295x2 is closer to 2 290's, not 290x's.

Seems like the 970 is out of the question for Witcher 3 / GTA V @ Ultra 1440/60

Is the 980 capable of achieving these specs? Considering picking one up when the 980 Ti rolls around and prices drop.

Just pull the one out and put the replacement one in the same slot. Secure it on the backplate portion via case screws or whatever your case uses. Just make sure the graphics card slides completely into the slot.

I have a question regarding to storage.
I do a lot of graphics work that I need to constantly save files. right now I am keeping these files on my HD (about 300-500gig sized HD). I keep copies too just in case of a HD fails but it is a pain in the ass because I have many large files.

What's a solution for me? I don't like burning them to discs.
