That temp is good.
That m-atx case is not small at all. What card are you having right now? And why would you think a 970 wont fit? I believe most should fit.
According to the LanCool website's product page, the K58 supports graphics cards up to 440mm in length in the upper slots and up to 290mm in the lower slots. The longest graphics cards with triple fan coolers are only around 320mm long or shorter, so there should be plenty of room.

Oops, I saw a video measuring 10.5"... but if the spec sheet says otherwise, then it should fit... yay. I have a 560Ti right now and was looking to buy a Gigabyte or MSI GTX 970.

Do you have any energy saviing options on in the bios?
I can recommend disabling them all so you can set your voltage way lower.
My 4,5ghz oc with 1,295 is staying stable under 65 C even on extrem high load.
I also use a 25€ air cooler with a single fan, nothing special.

I disabled most of them. My voltage is set at 1.35, I haven't tried lower cuz I'm lazy to go tweak and stress test.

Reducing the voltage prolongs the lifetime of the Chip and reduces the temperatures. You should definitely test to find the lowest voltage possible.

Is there a particular difference between EVGA and GIGABYTE graphics cards? Failure rates? Etc?

Still looking at the GTX 960 on NewEgg and was originally looking at the EVGA version. Just found a GIGABYTE version for around the same price, maybe lower but with less reviews, positive though. So clearly people are picking one brand over another but can't really see why.

Hi gaf. I am kind of out of my depth here. I am so used to buy and building PCs that i now have to shop for a laptop and i have no idea. Its main workhorse will be doing video so i want a quad core i7.

It looks like the i7-4702MQ is the cheapest CPU of that sort and looks like it should do that job.

So the annoying and high-pitched whine is definitely coming from my hyper 212 coolermaster CPU cooler. Should I just buy another one? It is definitely out of warranty at this point, as I built the rig mid 2011. Also, if I buy a new one and install it, what's the process like? Do I need to to buy and replace the thermal paste?

Just replace the fans. Cougar, noctua, corsair are all good.

What are some good options for $50 and under? Is the 212+ evo still my best bet? I've only mildly overclocked my 2500K to 4.0ghz, so I don't need anything crazy, just something quiet and effective.

Cross posting from the laptop thread, if not appropriate I will go ahead and delete:

Dumb question. My Acer Aspire has the following specs:

CPUIntel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5 GHz
16GB DDR3
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 860M

Broadly speaking, for multiplats should I go with the PC version or the Xbone One version? Assuming the PC port is decent, all else being equal which one should I lean towards?

I am specifically wondering about the Witcher 3 to start, but I will probably be picking up Batman 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition as well.

Been out of the loop on the PC scene. I've recently been having the itch to upgrade my computer, is there any component that I should look into besides my graphics card. I am thinking of grabbing a GTX 980 when the heavy hitters come out (GTA V, Witcher 3, etc) or should I wait a couple months?

CPU: i7 4770k (OC to 4.2ghz couldn't OC any higher...)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (2 x 8GB)
MOBO: ASUS Maximus VI Hero LGA 1150
SSD: Samsung 840 500GB SSD
GRAFX: Gigabyte GTX 770

It'd make more sense to wait. Your PC is still pretty beastly with the exception of the 770, but in 3-6 months there will be new ATI cards as well as the GTX 980TI (or whatever they're going to call it), which should be ~50% faster than a 980GTX. This is all speculation, of course, but if I were in your position I'd wait.

PC gaming sux.

Can't do anything without a 27.500 € custom PC...

Jesus.

First of all, gtfo is you aren't going to be helpful, joking aside or not. Secondly, who the hell would [pay that price. Sure that PC is a beast but it's an uneeded beast. That's like buying an exotic car just to drive it back and forth to work.

Other than the video card, which you don't have to replace unless you really really need to, that PC is fine. I'd wait for now unless that Gigabyte GTX 770 is a 2GB version. If it is a 2GB then you may wanna get a newer GPU sooner than later.

Corsair Air Series SP120 Quiet Edition Fan 120mm can be got for $20.
H.E.C. Cougar CFD12HBG 120mm Ultra Silent Case Fan, $20

Ok not a new pc question but a question nonetheless lol.

I pay for cable internet with advertised 10 MB/s down and 1 up. Its only 30 bucks a month so its fine for my browsing etc. I dont really play games online.

Anyways, if I do a speed test like OOKLA, I get abotu 7 or 8 MB/s down. I figure that is close enough. But I can never seem to reach that speed except on a speed test. If I am downloading on steam for example, or if I am downloading torrents, even ones with thousands of seeders, I can only get max 1.2 mb/s down. Its been like that ever since I moved here and I dont really know if thats just the way it is or if I can do something about it.

Any help?

You have to keep in mind that when you do a speedtest, it does it to a server that is closest to you, ie; less hops, so it's a tad misleading. Also I'm going to assume you're on a share connection (circuit) so it will also depend on the amount of people using the internet throughout the day.

When you download however you are also at the mercy of the connection that you're downloading from. Torrents work with up/down, so your ratio is going to play a factor.

Lastly and more importantly, your connection is likely advertised "speeds UP to 10mb/s", that way they don't have to guarantee a consist download rate. You may want to hit up your ISP to find out what your rate is and if there is any issues (noises / latency issues) with your connection. Also have them check your modem.

Your ISP and Speedtests use Megabits. Steam and most downloads use megabytes. 1.2 MB/s is 9.6 mbit/s. 1 Megabytes = 8 Megabit.

2 or 4GB VRAM on the 770? If it's 4GB I'd really recommend waiting another GPU generation. Your PC is very good overall.

I have the 4GB one.

Thanks for the input guys. Guess I'll wait it out for a few months and see how ATI cards stack up. If Nvidia ever drops the 980Ti, hopefully they'll drop the prices on the GTX 980 and I'll grab one of those.

That's what we are telling you to do. Any 120mm fan will fit your cooler. Remove. Replace. Easy. Don't even need to unmount it.

ohhhhhh, okay. Thanks. Is it pretty easy to remove the Hyper 212 fan? Sorry for all the terribly basic questions.

EDIT: Looks like my local Microcenter in PA has a decent variety of 120mm fans, will try one of these.

Yes very. Just slightly pull back the two plastic tabs holding the fan to the cooler on one side of the cooler and the other side with come off. Unplug the fan from the CPU header then get a screwdriver, carefully remove the foam padding from the plastic retention(You can use this again with your new fan to help remove vibrations) then remove the four screws holding plastic retention to the fan.

Get your new fan and decide if you want it in a push or pull config and attach and screw the retention to it then put it back on the cooler.

Try to buy a PWM(4 pin) fan so your motherboard can control the speed of the fan and it doesn't ran at full rpm(load) all the time.

Alright. Still trying to figure out if I should just buy a 980 now, and prepare for a great summer of gaming- GTA V, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight. Or, wait until the Ti comes out... I'm going from a 680 2GB. I've posted about it before on game related threads, but never here.

Are others just waiting? I'd still kind of love to head into these new titles with something more capable. And I'm sticking to 1080p, nothing too fancy.

Well, now that I've sold my i7 processor and I'm running a overclocked G3258 cannibalized from my HTPC, how do these voltages and temperatures look? I've been out of the loop for around 5 years when it comes to overclocking. Currently, I am running the G3258 @ 4.7GHz on 1.3 volts and on Prime95 it's running at ~65 degrees. There's some instability on boot up with BSODs though. I'm looking for high clock speed, stability, and acceptable heat in that order. I don't care too much about processor longevity as I'm gonna be keeping this setup for less than a year, at least until Skylake comes out.

Yesterday I set vcore to 1.35V but in hardware monitoring programs it said vcore was at 1.42V which I felt was high and not correctly set, so I put it lower. It seemed very stable at that higher voltage though.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo with a single fan for now

Gigabyte R9 270X 4GB @ 1125MHz
Seasonic 650 watts

You doing Offset clocking or is it fixed voltage so you have to deal with load spikes/drops?

I'd probably cap at 1.38V with an eye on whatever they call NB or VIO now.

Hey guys. I'm finally planning to build my own monster PC. I don't really have a specific budget but I also don't want to buy anything really unnecessary. Right now my plan is to build a PC with two Titan X GPUs in SLI.

What is the best motherboard and CPU out right now for my purposes? I don't plan to overclock right off the bat but having the option down the line might be nice. In addition to gaming at high resolution/fps (the main purpose of this build), I will use it for photo-editing and potentially video as well.

I already own a 1440p high refresh monitor and will likely get a 4k within the next year or so.

Before you do anything, you gotta have that budget. You also state that you don't want to buy anything really unnecessary but ten you say you plan on building a setup with two Titan X GPU's. That's kinda of unnecessary right now, especially for 1440p.

1. Budget
2. Parts to fix that budget
3. Review of parts
4.???
5. Profit.

Does anyone have a clue why my colour profiles never seem to stick after I shutdown? Whether done through Windows itself or Nvidia settings it never kicks in. If I go into Nvidia's settings it is as if it's set to use Nvidia's colour profile but I have to click it again for it to be enabled.

It's not unnecessary if you want to play at 1440p at 144hz on ultra for the newest games or in 4K at near 60 fps - which is my goal. I meant more like: I probably won't water cool if I don't have to. I want to keep the building process relatively simple.

Edit: Like I said previously, I'm just trying to figure out what the ideal motherboard + cpu is for me to accomplish the above goal and then I'll go from there. Consider budget unlimited (lol).

Sounds like the earliest you will see the 980 ti will be in June.

Look at "Smokey Build" in OP as a starting foundation. Add the Titan X's as the GPUs. Rampage V is a good choice for a high end mobo, unless you don't like the color scheme. 5930k or 5960x for processor with the latter being 8 core and $1000.

I have 4930k, Rampage IV Black Edition, and 2x Titan X. I get 60fps with ease in the majority of AAA games with max settings @ 4k (minus something like 8x MSAA or other equivalent which isn't necessary at 4k).

Excellent. Just what I was looking for. Thanks!

Pmuch any of the X99 boards are amazing for gaming. The ASUS X99-A is probably the go to. If you want fancy features, then the X99 Deluxe is good too.

The Rampage is for serious overclocking, like competitions, or for aesthetics.

I'm setting fixed voltage for vcore, although in the screenshot I have +0.200V offsets for the system agent voltage. I'll look into vcore offsets instead.

I disabled most of them. My voltage is set at 1.35, I haven't tried lower cuz I'm lazy to go tweak and stress test.

Dude, that's way to high!
You can definitly go lower and I highly recommend it, it's worth your time.
Try 1,300 and you will have a way cooler cpu and you can set the fan to quieter rpm's.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Lc8R6h

That's my plan right now. I based it off of the Smokey build in the OP as suggested. The only thing I'm really unsure about is the case at this point and that's just purely aesthetics. Am I missing something or does this seem like a good setup?
That RAM is absolute madness, there's no way you need to spend that much on it for any reason. Maybe something like G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2800 instead?

I'd probably suggest the Corsair H110i GT over the H105. It's widely regarded as the current king of all in one coolers right now. Check out these sweet numbers!

Other less obvious things I'll leave to the resident high end experts!

I'd second that. It's a complete waste to spend $1060 on memory. 32GB is ok but you would be paying hundreds of dollars premium on 'faster' memory there that only gives you tiny (1-2 fps if that) gains in games compared to a hugely cheaper set of 32GB memory, especially when it comes to DDR4, as it is new to the market and manufacturers haven't started pushing its performance like we see with DDR3.

I'm on an X99 board and I went with the 'budget' G-Skills Ripjaws 16GB set. Compared to more expensive memory, I'm losing 1 fps or gaining 1 fps which = no loss at all compared to other DDR4 sets. Guess how much I spent on this memory? £70 off Ebay.

I'll echo what others have said...1k on RAM is madness. But if you like it because you also want a show rig, then I guess it is what it is. I'd probably get the same RAM but from a different company. The Dominator line to me has almost always been for show which is understandable if it's what you want to do.

Go with something in this price range, and use the savings to upgrade to the 5960x. If you're spending this much you might as well get the best CPU you can.

Hey Gaf,

I've been pretty flippant about upgrade my current PC, and I think at this point I'm looking for something compact to mid sized that can be in my living room. I really want to enjoy it on a large TV with my surround sound system from my couch. Does anyone have any recommended builds including cases that may faciliate this please? Thanks!

I would like to be able to have an HDMI out (from the GFX card) that I could plug into my receiver that also carries audio.

Your Current Specs: CPU / RAM / Motherboard / GPU (Graphics) / PSU (Power Supply) / Case / HDD (Hard Drive)

Budget: 600 - 900, USA

Main Use: Rate 1-5. 5 being Highest:
5 Gaming
5 Emulators
4 Streaming

Monitor Resolution: Will hook up to my Samsung HD TV 55inch

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well:
60 FPS is preferable, DirectX 12 compatible
Witcher 3, MGS V, any other huge awesome Tripple A Games

Looking to reuse any parts?: N/A

When will you build?: Do you have a deadline? No deadline, can start whenever, preferably within the next 2 months or so.

Will you be overclocking?: No

I want to upgrade my PC to able to play "current gen" games, whether its Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3 or future games such as Deus Ex or Mass Effect(although those are hard to guess at ths time) at decent performance, say 30-40 FPS at high settings(not ultra) and 1080p(or little less if needed).

These are my current specs(i know they're "shitty", but I haven't upgraded anything since 2011-2012 at least), what would I need to change beside the GPU? I don't want to spend more than 1000$(canadian) for now. I don't need some monster video card either, something below 300$ if possible. I won't overclock.

Motherboard : Asus MSA97
CPU : AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 955, 3.2Ghz
GPU : Geforce GTX 560 Ti 1gb
RAM : 8gb
Power supply : 550-600W... i'm not sure.
My HDD is at 640gb... guess I could upgrade that too, but i'm just deleting games I'm not playing anymore, so i always have a couple of hundreds gbs free.

Alternatively, the GTX 970 which may be preferable for the zero fan speed and lower heat, although that'd add around $40 to the cost or so.

If you can wait the two months, AMD should be releasing their R9 3XX graphics card line around June according to rumors.

You could opt for an Intel i5 processor and motherboard if you wanted better framerate, otherwise the cheaper solution might be to look for an FX 63XX/83XX processor and overclock. For a graphics card under $300 CAD, your options are limited to the R9 280X or GTX 960. You shouldn't need a new power supply.

Where in Canada are you? If you're close to Vancouver, NCIX has a clearance outlet in Richmond with open box R9 290 graphics cards for around $230~300.

I'm in Quebec, so that's on the complete other side of Vancouver. :P

How good are the performance on GTX 960 and R9 280X? I don't want them to have a hard time handling something like Witcher 3 on medium/high settings. If I have to pay a little over 300$ CAN, so be it, but i don't want to surpass 400$, taxes included. =/

Are AMD CPUs that bad compared to an i5 for me to need a new motherboard if i want better framerates?

Any recommendations for a non tacky way of elevating my PC off the carpet? It's currently sitting on my desk, but I'd like to move it down to clear up space. I don't want to just sit it on some 2x4's, though. Only thing I've thought of is going back to IKEA and picking up desktop (minus the legs) that matches my gallant desk. I'm not sure they come in a small enough size though.

For size references, I have a Little Devil PC-V7.

620mm x 220mm depth and width

Get a piece of baltic birch and router the edges nicely.

I've had a X-star DP2710 monitor for the last 5 days and everything was working fine, no dead pixels and a trivial amount of backlight bleeding.
Today I was messing around with the overclock* of my 970 and all of a sudden I hear this awful coil whine, checked everything and it seems to be coming from the monitor.
I had a look online and there seems to be an issue with coil whine which is related to the brightness level of the panel. I tried the fixes and nothing works the whine is still there. Now the weird part is that the noise seems to be tied to what's going on on screen.
Reading/watching movies = no noise at all
Civ/Pillars of eternity/cities = coil whine but fairly faint
Fps/benchmark = extreme degree of coil whine.

I can't seem to find any other case where this seems to be the issue, it's either always present or not.
Has anyone got any experience with this, or is the monitor busted?

* I didn't put some insane overclock on my card just pushed the core clock another 5MHz to 160MHz which crashed the drivers.
The panel itself hasn't been overclocked either.

Guys, I'm building a PC for my bro. He's not a big gamer, but I'm sure having a PC now will tempt him into that in the near future. Doesn't need a "max" all PC.

He's budget is a bit low for now so he'll be running on integrated with an i3. Is this a good enough PC? Can I do better. Budget is around $300-$350. Leaving some room for a GTX660-GTX960 in the future and an extra stick of 4GB RAM.
