So, I need a bit of help. My Biostar H77MU33 motherboard won't let me overclock my i5-3570k for some reason. I have the latest version of the BIOS flashed on there, and the Biostar website says it supports this CPU, does anyone know what's wrong?
It supports using your cpu, but you need a Z77 series motherboard to overclock. H77 can't.

Hey GAF, this is my current build from 2011 and I want to upgrade to either a GTX 970 or 980. Mainly recommendations on how to make it more up-to-date and faster besides OCing

  • Windows 7
  • Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W
  • ZALMAN CNPS11X Extreme V-Shaped Dual Heatpipe Design w/120mm Long Life Bearing CPU Cooler
  • CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000)
  • EVGA SuperClocked 015-P3-1582-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support
  • ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
  • CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC
  • Rosewill Gaming Computer Case - BLACKHAWK - ATX Mid Tower - Top HDD Dock, Side Window Panel, 5 Preinstalled Fans

I want 16 GB of RAM, is there any recommendation of what to buy? Can another stick of the exact one I have work or are there newer versions that would be worth it to get, such as a DDR5 stick?

Also debating on this 970 since it's only $297 atm but I would really like a 980 at least to be parallel in the same series as I had previously. I'm just worried the 980 Ti will release in June as rumors have mentioned and I'd love that one for sure.

I also have a 750GB SSD I'd like to transfer my OS to :D

Buy the best single card you can afford.

You'll want to get 2 more sticks of matching RAM, or just a set of 2x8GB sticks if you can't find your RAM anymore.

Nothing really else to upgrade until you go with a new motherboard/proc, which is not worth it at this time unless you want to use some of the specific features like m2 SSDs.

All up and running great now with my new Samsung 850 Evo 1TB and HGST 4TB NAS Desktop drives. I first tried to clone my OS drive (500GB SSD) to the 1TB via USB 3.0, and thought it worked, but nope. I had to use a Live CD to get it to work and now it's all peachy :).

Replaced the 1TB with a 500GB, and replaced my WD 1TB Black & WD 2TB Green with the 4TB NAS drive. So up 1.5TB and down a drive.

I'm debating going to 16gigs in my system as well. Should be no issues with getting the exact same set of 2x4gig sticks? Newegg happens to still sell the RAM I have in my system:

Even a pretty good price right now.

It supports using your cpu, but you need a Z77 series motherboard to overclock. H77 can't.

What do you mean exactly? You can't find the overclocking settings? Or the overclocking settings won't work?

I'm reading through your H77MU3 motherboard manual and there's a "performance" section with the overclocking options you want. Kennah is right though, for better overclocking you need a Z77 motherboard. H77 motherboards are more limited when it comes to overclocking.

Looking for part suggestions. I have a budget around $2200 and the only thing I know I want in the PC for sure is a 500gb Samsung EVO. I don't need extra hard drives, that one would do.

I'd also like the entire system to match color/scheme wise. The NZXT cases are pretty nice, black/red probably seems like the easiest to accomplish.

System will be strictly for gaming. Thanks in advance if someone chooses to help.

You asked earlier about NCIX assembly services. Would you prefer to order everything from there and just add their $50 assembly and warranty service, or would going with different retailers and building it yourself be OK?

Does the $2200 budget include monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS, etc?

I've been thinking about upgrading my rig for Witcher 3 but I'm not sure If I should just replace my GPU or go all the way and get a new motherboard and CPU while I'm at it. What do you guys think?

My current rig:

ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
Intel Core i5-2500K OC @ 3.7 GHz
GTX 680
16 GB RAM

Would upgrading to a GTX 970 suffice for 1080p gaming?

Yes. You can definitely push that OC higher too.

Hey Gaf,

Is there some kind of new generation of GPU around the corner that i should wait for or is it a good time to buy a new one?

(i don't mind waiting a bit)

Looking for some advice. My current setup:

Core i5-2500K OC'd to 4.8GHz.
16GB RAM
ASROCK Z77E-ITX Mobo
GTX 970 GPU

This is still a great setup. But I am starting to see the i5 to hold it back. GTA5 can do a pretty good job of maxing all of the cores.

The mobo wiill support up to Ivy Bridge, but finding an old Ivy Bridge of Sandy Bridge i7 doesn't seem like it would save me much over judge getting a new CPU and mobo.

Should I try to make it another year with this setup?

My mobo is not in a small form factor case anymore, by the way.

wait until skylake. it should be ddr3 compatible, but we don't know if any cpus beyond that will be.

Wow, just watched a vid featuring the 212 Evo and that fan is HUMONGOUS! did some measurements of my case and it -should- fit, but man am I nervous.

That's super expensive to spend on a case. What about things like the Fractal Define R5, NZXT H440

I'm a tad bit vain and would prefer a full sized tower for future upgrades since I can actually do that now but looking at it now I don't think there is a SSD harddrive slot and I'd rahter not buy a bracket. I guess I'll keep looking but I do like the NXZT you linked.

My current build...

Windows 8.1 64Bit
Intel Core i5-4670 CPU @ 3.4Ghz
G.Skill Ares F3-1600C9D-8GAO 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001
Corsair CX-500 Modular 80+ Bronze Power Supply
SanDisk Ultra Plus 128GB SSD
Galaxy GeForce GTX 760 2GB
ASRock Z87 Extreme4 Motherboard
Corsair Carbide 500R Case - Black
SteelSeries Apex M800 Mechanical RGB Gaming Keyboard
Corsair Vengeance M60 FPS Laser Gaming Mouse
2x Dell Ultrasharp U2410 24'' Monitors
Logitech Standard Speakers & SubWoofer

Thinking of upgrading to support Witcher 3 and GTA5 et al.
It's a pretty good setup; been running smoothly the last 3 years but I'm being tempted by graphics cards especially the 980 GTX series.

Any recommendations on what to upgrade based on this build and models?
Also is that PSU strong enough to handle a 980?

Uh, so if I decide to go in blind and try to build my own(and I apologize for sounding ignorant), how difficult is it? I know my way around the inside of a CPU as far as upgrades, but I've never built one.

Hey everyone...

I have some basic PC questions that I need some help, just to make sure I am doing things correctly.

So, I am adding a 1 TB SSD to my RIG which already has 2 513gb SSD's. What I want to do is eliminate my HDD's from my system. I have a ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Mobo, which has 2 Intel SATA ports that I currently have my 2 SSD's. So I know one of the SSD's will need to use the ASMEDIA Sata ports and not run at full speed.

What my question/assistance is needed is doing things in the correct order. My current config is:

SSD1 which is the C Drive and the OS Drive
SSD2 which is the E Drive
HDD1 which is the F Drive
HDD2 which is the G Drive

I plan to remove my DVD Drive which is currently my Drive D. I want the new 1 TB SSD to be the "D" Drive my old SSD to be the "E" Drive. Do I physically remove the DVD Drive and both HDD's and the "E" Drive SSD first? Install the new SSD and name it the "D" Drive, then add the other SSD and name it "E"?

I know it may sound confusing, but my end goal is to have:

SSD1 which is the OS Drive as C and using the Intel Sata Port as it is now
SSD2 which is the new 1 TB SSD as Drive D using the Intel Sata Port
SSD3 which is the old "E" drive and it will use the slower ASMEDIA Sata Port.

This will allow the 2 main drives to be at the fastest possible speed due to them being Intel Sata ports and while slower, it still would be faster than HDD's for the last drive.

It is very easy, almost plug n play easy to build a PC. I have found the most stressful parts is installing the CPU into the socket, attaching your cooling solution. Outside of that, it pretty much is very easy. I would advise to not care about cable management at first, hook everything up and get it up and running and do the cable management after words. It is very frustrating to do cable management and get everything nice and tidy to discover something is not plug into the right thing.

Think it's time to to upgrade. GTA runs like absolute shit on my 560ti.

i5-2500k @ 3.6ghz
8gb ram
560ti

Looking to upgrade my gpu, any good deals in the UK? I've been looking at some gtx 960 cards, looking for some advice/opinions.

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SSC 4096MB GDDR5 is on Overclockers for £209, yay or nay? Or is there anything better than a 960 in my price range, 770/760/750ti for example?

If you're sticking with Nvidia then a good 960 on sale would probably be fine IMO. But a 970 would be worth the extra cash if you could spring for one. Would last a lot longer.

Also have you thought about OCing that 2500k? You could probably do at least 800MHz more for free, or a gig.

Find a used 780 or get an AMD 290, or wait for June.

What about grounding yourself and not destroying the components or some such?

I have built about 10 systems for people and never had an issue, but at first I was worried about that exact thing. You can get one of those straps that you put on your wrist and clip it to the frame of the case to ground yourself just to be safe.

The 2500K is still very good - it's not that far behind a 4670K/4690K. If you want more performance than that, then wait for Skylake (performance is unknown at this point) or go with hexacore processors on X99. I wouldn't recommend a quad core i7 processor, you wouldn't see a lot of difference compared to your 2500K for most games.

The Phanteks Enthoo Pro is also quite nice. I personally like Corsair cases as well.

Neither of them. Get this XFX R9 290 (£230) for best bang for your buck.

£300 I'm thinking that's a little steep, would the 960 last me for the rest of the gen? I was looking at a budget of around £200
Well if that's your budget then you're better off going with the R9 290 option RGM79 listed above me if you can afford it. Much better than a 960.

A guy on Craigslist is selling an evga 970 for $250, he only used it for a week. I bought a 290 recently, flipping the 290 for $220-$240 (Asus OC version) is probably a good move value wise, right?

If you don't mind the 3.5GB VRAM issue (you'll probably be fine for 1080p gaming) then it's a pretty good deal.

Yeah, I'm only gaming at 1080p.

EDIT: Evga has a great warranty, right? If the seller hasn't registered the card in his name am I able to register it in mine so I am covered if anything goes wrong?

does anyone know if you have a 60hz monitor, are there any benefits whatsoever for a game to be running 100+ fps?

Or does it not do anything in that case? (assuming you never go below 60 fps)

Yeah, I'm only gaming at 1080p.

Yeah, it should be possible. You do need proof of purchase though, so make sure to get the original receipt from the guy. If he doesn't have proof of purchase, EVGA still has decent warranty coverage for secondary owners. Check here to be sure, used cards carry a 3 year warranty from date of manufacture so even the oldest GTX 970s will have around 2.5 years of warranty left.

A 280x should have a good bit more longevity this generation than a 960.

Or, get that 290 the other guy just posted if you can afford it. Very powerful card for the money.

Today is the day I finally go buy my new rig. However there is one new thing that has me doubting. I was originally going to get a relatively cheap kit of 2x4gb RAM 1866mhz CL10. However I noticed the store is doing a fire sale on 2x8gb RAM 1600 mhz CL10.

The latter kit only costs little more but it is indeed slower and has the same latency(?). I'm tempted to go with the latter since apparently RAM speed isn't such a huge deal. Any thoughs? It will be for Haswell 4790k.
