I need an RPG in a bad way...

Anyhow... Hopefully I'll find a couple RPGs to join Mario on my list of RPGs I enjoy.

Maybe you just need to play Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4, or Final Fantasy 6. They're basically that game without the Mario paint job and story.

Nevermind, let's keep to our 2 dimensional "badasses" in RPGs and never have characters deal with any kind of actual human issues :p

There's a difference between that, and characters so emotional and bitchy that you can see the tampon string hanging out between their legs.

Well you know, I really would like to be the chosen one again.

I don't really play RPGs much anymore, but when I do, they are of the eastern variety but have been looking to diversify my gaming tastes as of late. I just began playing KOTOR on my Xbox and am loving it. I'm wondering what are some other good, must have western RPGs (I plan to buy KOTOR 2 after completing the first one.)? The platform doesn't matter. Thanks in advance. As to the original post, maybe you should kick it old school. I always thought Crono Trigger was pretty cool. As someone suggested, Baten Kaitos is interesting in some ways.

Can someone explain Baten Kaitos' battle system? I tried playing it last night, and I was like....huh?
get out know while the gettin's good.

also if you can't understand it try a bit harder. it is not that hard to figure out. if you can't, you are either dumb or apathetic. if the latter, why bother playing?

On the Xbox:

-KOTOR 2
-Arx Fatalis
-Fable
-Morrowind GOTY Edition

are worth trying.

And of course people have been naming off PS2 RPG's like crazy. You can't go wrong with the birthplace of the Western RPG (PC) either.

wtf, the game is not 'bad'. It has a weak story and it's too easy...but otherwise it's got a great battle system, creative visuals, and wonderful music. It's no game of the year, but suggesting that people who already got the game should completely ditch it is ludicrous.

It's easy? Ooo, I like that. I can get it off my backlog easier. Don't have to bother getting stronger and such then?

The opening video was rather intriguing for me, anyway. I still want to play it, but I just need to understand the battle system more. Is there a tutorial in the game somewhere?

And why do all the characters talk like they are speaking inside of a tupperware container?

Skies was shit... Couldn't pay me to play that again. The visuals were so generic and the animation during battle scenes lacked so much polish. What I played felt so slopped together.

Get on WOW so I can kill you for dissing SOA. :)

Lets put it this way: Youll never lose to a boss and go back and have to level up even more. The leveling progresses at a correct pace, you should never be underleveled.

You actually level up by visiting a "church" Just submit youre EX to gain levels and submit the key items to increase your class which allows you to carry a bigger deck.

And why do all the characters talk like they are speaking inside of a tupperware container?
dunno, I just turned off the voices. Some say its to give the impression your hearing em in Kalas' head sinc e you are actually the spirit. But since I dont know if the Jp version was donel ike this, im not sure

it is godawful though, the va that is

Use weapon/spell cards during the character's attack turn to cause damage. You can also use healing items during this turn by targeting your own party.

When the enemies attack, you can select armor(or some weapon) cards to defend.

As your characters' class increase, so will the amount of cards they can use per turn. Levels are increased by visiting the church at save points.

That's basically it.

There are numbers on the corner of the cards. If you use them in sequential order(or in pairs, threes etc), you cause extra damage.

There are 6 elements, each with an opposing force. IIRC, Fire vs Water, Wind vs Chrono, Dark vs Light. Attacking with the opposing element of the enemies will cause extra damage. If you use two opposing elements during the same attacking turn, they will cancel out each other's damage.

Camera cards can take photos of enemies(and your own characters) which is the best way to make money.

See, ferricide? Was it that hard? Go wank off, boy!

I will remember this when I try again tonight.

It was like that in the Jpn version too. Hmmm...never knew the US version also sounded like that so I just assumed Monolith fucked the sound up. Guess I know now ^^;

it's on the verge, IMO. besides, i'm just idly picking on it. everyone has the games they like to make fun of, and i think it's a valid one. the way you freak out about SO3, i don't think you really have room to argue here.

i think given the amount of better games out now and most people's free time levels, there's no reason to waste time on BK.

demi said:

it's very, very easy, which pretty much ruins the gameplay IMO as you don't actually have to pay attention to the strategy at all. of course, i killed all of the enemies because that's how i tend to play games. maybe if you level less it would be more challenging. or make up fun rules like "i am not allowed to heal."

demi said:

i can't remember at this point, but it's not too complex. there are six elements, and each is paired with one that cancels each other out. so don't use two cards of opposing elements in the same turn. meanwhile of course there are ones that are more effective against others, so you should try to use those elements on enemies of the opposing element.

i could have written that more clearly, and with examples, except it's been awhile and i pretty much forget it.

anyway, really you should just remember to always equip cards with higher attack values and put a few food items in your deck and you will never, ever die.

it's not a horrible game, no, and i liked a lot of things about it, but i also hated lots of things about it -- like the story and all of the characters. it's so dumb it's practically insulting. yes, i turned to the voices off.

I don't think I really 'freak out' about SO3 (maybe XSep2) but fair enough.

True, but Demi has obviously already finished SH2 so what other good rpgs are out there to suggest over BK? SMT3 ok I agree on that. But off the top of my head that's about it. Also again he has the game in his hands so I don't think it's really cool to say "hey, the game you just bought sucks! Go play something else" :\

Actually, screw all these recommendations, SMT3 nocturne bored me to tears after 10 hours or so, it simply doesnt give you any motivation to follow the story, it feels more like a dark themed pokemon game, the game is beautiful though but i simply cant get back into it.

FFX is good actually, nothing fruity about it, im actually replaying it since the past week, 21 hours into it and the game still impress me.

But what olimario needs all above these imo is.... ANACHRONOX !!!

Watch the awesome trailer :D

http://www.fileplanet.com/files/60000/61956.shtml

Dont bother with the demo since its so out context of the game, it skips all the story, the charm of the characters and picks the worst level in the game as a demo. If you cant buy it, pirate it, yea i said it, the studio closed long ago and its no longer printed, so its an abandonware pretty much.

One of my favorite rpg on PC, turned based, AWESOME set of characters, funny as hell, kickass and convincing universe, good voice acting, and one of the most refreshing story to hit the RPG genre in decades.

SMT:Nocturne.

and I dont know why its considered a really difficult RPG. I found it very accessible, beautiful and interesting.

and i agree with you on paper mario 2, ZzZzzZZ.

Baldurs Gate 2 (PC) - Best Rpg ever

Minsc owns pretty much everything

Star Wars Kotor (Xbox) - Second best rpg ever

not quite up there with baldurs, close though

I also recommend Baten Kaitos for this RPG n00b.

Final Fantasy X is good too! It's made for people who are new to RPG's and it's not fruity.. Rent it!

I just started Shadow Hearts last night, and I like it--it's not God's gift to RPGs, but it certainly doesn't seem to deserve the 5.5 it got from IGN.

It's hard to go back to these long cutscenes after playing SMT: Nocturne, though (where the storyline is integrated into the gameplay so completely that you almost never get cutscenes). If I had to recommend a single PS2 RPG right now, it'd be Nocturne (though that may change after I play Shadow Hearts: Covenant, which I'm going to do right after I finish Shadow Hearts).

You should become my protégé, every time there is a RPG thread you need to.

1. Talk up Baldur’s gate and KOTOR (plus Jade Empire).

2. Post the highest ranking RPG list from game rankings.

3. Talk about how affordable BG, BG2 and KOTOR are

4. Always whore Bioware and talk about all the great features of BG 2

5. Rinse and repeat.

oh yeah PS2 is backwards compatible!

Check out some PSX RPG's! Chrono Cross (awesome music, graphics, towns), Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy VIII, Parasite Eve 2 etc.

Best suggestion here was Doom_Bringer's. Play some PSX games to see the light olimario. This gen's RPGs are kinda dissapointing.

What's wrong with Star Ocean 3: Til The End of Time? I almost bought it the other day over GTA: San Andreas.

Annoyingly linear like FFX. Well at least the first 10-15 hours I played it.

I honestly don't understand the SO3 hate on this forum. RPG critics are so weird sometimes. If you like Final Fantasy games I don't see why you dont like this one. It's like the same fucking game with a different battle system.

buy a dreamcast and grandia 2

Sorry but Grandia 2 sucks! The game just falls apart in the end and the story is just badical :lol

1.) Go into a town, people are unhappy or something is horribly wrong
2.) Party detects Valmar's presence
3.) Go into dudgeons, defeat a part of Valmar
4.) Demonic girl eats the part of Valmar, learns new fighting ability
5.) Back to town where everything is back to normal

Rinse and Repeat 4 or 5 times... = Grandia 2

Which PS2 RPG has the best story?

I played FFX, Dark Cloud 2 and FFX2

SO3, Arc the Lad:SoT, Xenosaga and Suikoden 3 all had decent stories as well. Don't listen to the haters on this forum, go read reviews and discover for yourself if the game is for you or not. :)

Haven't played Shadow Hearts 1 or 2 yet. But I do have them ordered now. :)

I didn't like SO3's story. Suikoden 3 has a great story, maybe the best story of any game on the PS2.....but the battle system is down right shitty. Xenosaga has a pretty good story, and an ok battle system but too much watching and not enough playing...

Yeah I remember the first time I played Suikoden 3, I almost died on the first battle because of the battle system. Ugh it pissed me off to no end... but after I got used to it, it was all good from there. The worst part about the story is it seems to just fall apart at the end. The story during the trinity sight system rocks though.

I'd pretty much guarantee that Oli would like Baten Kaitos. It's GC exclusive, it's extremely pretty (garish at times, but pretty in a RPG setting), it has an interesting battle system and it's not uber-challenging. The story isn't good, but guess what? Most RPGs, especially recent JRPGs, don't have good stories.

I'd also second Shadow Hearts: Cov because it's genuinely clever and funny a lot of the time and that makes up for the conventional gameplay. Don't bother grabbing part 1, you won't appreciate the whole thing enough and the graphics will bring you down.

If Shadow Hearts Covenant has "conventional" gameplay, well, then I'm about done with discussion here.
