Some girl cast a spell that caused a clock to appear. That (IMO) looks like standard FF-esque stuff. But I haven't played Shadow Hearts. Why is it unlike every other JRPG?
Actually, I haven't. I forgot where my save is at, but watching the trailer like 4-5 times is getting me pumped to jump back in! SHADOW FUCKING HEARTS
I've been playing Tales of Symphonia mainly right now, but I throw in Baten Kaitos when Symphonia begins to bore me.

Are you talking about the Judgment Ring? That's how battles work. You have to hit certain parts of the ring to have your attack work, and if you miss your attack ends right there. The Judgment Ring determines how strong and long your attack is, basically. IT RULES OVER ALL. It certainly isn't as confusing as Baten Kaitos's
Speevy: if you've played Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Shadow Hearts has the same kind of reflex-based game mechanic. Other than that, it's a similar battle system to an FF game, but the Judgment Ring basically means you have to stay alert, and you can't mash the X button to get through battles while reading a novel or something.
Lets be fucking honest here, if he got bored of PM2, he's not gonna get very far in any of Bioware's shit. They're not really, well, interesting. At all.
It's not the overall story that makes the RPG, it's the characters - unfortunately, a lot of companies seem to forget both I'd go with Shadow Hearts 2, that game kicks so much ass it's not even funny (it was my favorite game of 2004). SMT:Nocturne seems extremely fast paced, but it has a lot of random battles and not very much of a story. Baten Kaitos, which I'm playing now, is pretty, but it's very slow paced (battles are rather fast, but the rest of the game is rather slow), and it's long. I just got Ys 6 today, I'll let you know how that is. SH2 is probably your safest bet.
FFX
FFX-2(it's a good lighthearted game battle system is awesome)
SH1
SH:C
SMT(pretty much a dungeon crawler I didn't like it too much but if you like dungeon crawlers it's pretty good)
And he bad mouthed PM 2. He will burn for this, burn I say!
Anyway, just like demi has been preaching, you should definetly consider picking up both Shadow Hearts games. The story is interesting, and Covenant is actually very well done. Also, I would highly recommend Baten Kaitos mainly because of the battle system. As soon as you learn the inner workings of the cards, you will definetly have a great time with the various combos. The characters do get rather annoying, their is little to no story whatsoever, and the voice-overs are horrible but the art design is absolutely gorgeous, especially the pre-rendered backgrounds. It is worth a try.
Also, djtiesto, I am eagerly awaiting your Ys impressions. I was a breath away from buying it the other day, but managed to refrain myself. I have been thirsting for a classic RPG with the classic formula so Ys seems right up my alley.
