ngl I never understood wtf someone would waste their time watching someone play a game vs playing it. I randomly found 2 I enjoy through YouTube's algorithm. I don't even recall why I initially gave them a chance, but now I enjoy them both quite a bit. curious what other's watch, if anything?

His content is all over the place, but I enjoy the videos where he revisits classic games to see how well they've held up but my favorite is his Worst MMO Ever? series, where he visits the worst MMOs ever.

They’re also very friendly to their audiences and all have editors who trim up the fat

I've watched a lot of Twitch but when people are judgmental about it or act like I'm stupid, or they convey those sentiments towards people who watch others game in general, there really isn't a reason to try and explain myself. It isn't worth the waste of time when people act so contemptuous.

Yep. I will watch a walkthrough through a particular spot or puzzle. Or a strategy in say a 4x or War game, but don’t get spending time watching other people play.

I'd say over the past 10 or so years I've progressively gotten more and more exhausted of legacy media

pretty much all the movies and TV shows I watch are +10 years old. my parents have cable and literally everything that comes out nowadays is trash.

only thing that ever excites me coming out of any major studio nowadays is the random weird horror film that somehow gets the green light by a big studio, like The Substance or Pearl

I don't digest anything on YouTube the same way I would a movie

this is on the tablet while I'm doing dishes, or on the TV while I'm folding clothing, etc.

I find it's way easier to digest while multitasking than other media

For me it's more about the personality/commentary than the gameplay. These days all I really watch is NorthernLion stream highlights, just because he's a genuinely funny guy.

Also IronPineapple's Steam Dumpster Diving series is great. I discovered a lot of cool games through it.

I think I've seen IronPineapples vids where he plans random ass souls likes games from steam. I enjoyed them, forgot about his channel. maybe I'll head over and SMASH that subscribe button!

The very first actual Youtuber walkthrough I saw was Zemalf for XCOM where he went ironman hardest difficulty without a single character dead.
I was surprised how hooked I was watching his analysis for...20hours or more, same as how Day9 analyse everything from a developer perspective.

I never got the "fun" Youtubers lets play part. They remain funny for exactly 20 mins.

I think I read a poll somewhere which showed that currently more people watch people playing video games than playing them. Guess it's not only porn that does that. XD

As for streamers, I don't usually watch them play, but I did get a few chuckles from seeing Az playing Five Hearts One House or whatever.

I like watching other people play survival horror games and speedruns, but other than that I'd rather just play them myself.

I do watch occasionally but only when I’m eating, so no time is lost. That said, I like playthroughs where people play that know a game’s lore. Bloodborne from Epicnamebro really helped me grasp the story of the game. My last one was Baldurs Gate 3 from Wolfheart as I had to drop the game when I didn’t get into it. Was pretty decent. He sure knows his D&D.

I do sometimes, mainly for some different reasons. I also only tend to this when I'm either making dinner or laying in bed. If my just chilling in my living room, me actually gaming would take over like 99% of the time.

1) Speedruns - It can be truly fascinating watching some people just absolutely destroy a game. I enjoy the 80 and 90 platformer games for this. Truly blows my mind how good some people get at this. Needing literally frame perfect jumps or whatever and they seem to hit them at ungodly rates.

2) Strategy - Early this year I found myself watching a lot of Balatro/ Slay the Spire videos. Just watching people try certain builds in deck building games helped me be more creative.

3) Entertainment - Some have mentioned, but NL already but there are some people that are either funny or have an intriguing personality to watch/listen too.

4) Esports - This ranks dead last for me, can't really get into it as much but some things can get good. As a big smite player, I loved watching the world championships. Couldn't watch regular seasons or anything like that though for Esports. Would rather just play myself at that point.

I do watch some stuff. It all boils down to one of a few categories: speed runs, challenges, and creative/interesting/novel gameplay.

The first two are things I can’t do or won’t put the time in to achieve, but I can also learn things from them. Creative gameplay can overlap with challenges, and if we use Elden Ring as an example it has led to many different runs. It enhances my experience.

I don’t just hop on twitch though.

yeah I stopped watching most of the GTA ones. The others are fine

I have watched a few. I haven't enjoyed them, because the hosts - at least the ones I heard - were always excited or going "woah" at everything. It seemed like a transparent attempt to make the viewing experience entertaining and "fun," but it had the opposite effect on me. I sat there thinking, "Why are you getting so excited about this? Just calm down and play the game." The constant running commentary annoyed me.

But that was "videos about gaming," not "people watching other people playing video games." So, it refers to stuff like podcasts, interviews, previews, reviews, gaming controversies, etc. Streamers were a part of that, but just a part.
