I started watching YouTube videos of people playing video games

do you watch TV?

this doesn't cut into my gaming time. it cuts into my TV time.

I'd say over the past 10 or so years I've progressively gotten more and more exhausted of legacy media

pretty much all the movies and TV shows I watch are +10 years old. my parents have cable and literally everything that comes out nowadays is trash.

only thing that ever excites me coming out of any major studio nowadays is the random weird horror film that somehow gets the green light by a big studio, like The Substance or Pearl
I hear you, I quit watching television maybe almost 20 years ago. I do watch a lot of Youtube now (honestly most of it is actually listening, not watching), but if it's gaming related it's typically documentary or analytical, but I use Youtube mostly for listening to documentaries about ancient culture, archaeology, geology, forensic science, whatever.

I mostly watch gameplays and reviews to choose what to play.

I don't see the point of seeing a full-on commented walkthrough of an interactive product.

I used to watch Mario Maker troll levels by CarlSagan42, and sometimes watch when some Japanese artist I support does some live streaming (Matsui Rena via YouTube or Furukawa Mirin on Twitch) but for the most time I prefer watching tools' review / repair channels, I find them more useful because you actually need to know about the matter, with a game no matter the genre I could pick up the controller and play it which leads me into thinking I could be playing better than what the streamer is doing, which lowers my streaming enjoyment.

dont forget the videos of people watching videos of people playing games.
You talking about Asmogold right?

Do you take their words based on their reactions seriously? cause theirs maybe different than yours, even if just %10 of chance, it does count when you do it yourself.

Marz is easy on the eyes and is good in Soulsborne games. I watched her on and off.
EpicNameBro when he was on youtube was quite insightful in his Bloodborne playthrough. Lots of good tips back then carried all the way into Elden Ring for me. I remember playing the game in synch with his uploads.
Nowadays I watch Wellonz and some Scary Game Squad stuff for the vibes.

Sometimes I still find StarCraft matches very entertaining, but brood war is usually more interesting to watch than 2.

I watch some because I find their jokes/reactions funny. I'm not gonna spoil myself of a game I'm currently playing or plan to play soon though.

You know that feeling when you finishing something so good and you say "i wish i could forget everything about it to experience it again"?
One way to kinda satisfy that feeling is by vicariously experiencing it again through watching people experience it for the first time. At least thats one of the reasons for me.

For anyone more interested in retro game reviews with phenomenal editing and an air of 90s game journalism professionalism about it, I highly recommend

Game Sack

Easily the best gaming YouTuber out there. The dude (Joe) established his formula and principles like 15 years ago and they haven’t changed since, despite YouTube becoming a hugely clickbaity platform now. His channel has been around longer than almost any other game reviewer, but still has had a comparatively low growth rate since he doesn’t succumb to algorithmic trends.

Here’s a good compilation video. Just skip through to any section to see what it’s like.
