I still think the Earpods were the megaton from Apples events

I'll still walk around with these

Haters gonna hate.

We’re all accustomed to putting earbuds in our ears, or muffs over them. But the AfterShokz wrap around the back of your head and sit on the flat area between your ears and eyes, just in front of your ears.

Once they’re on and you crank up the music, the strangest thing is that you can still hear what is going on around you – while you’re listening to the music! This really helps from a safety perspective if you’re doing other things, such as riding a bike or operating machinery.

Those seem really neat! Anyone try them?

Once again I see the worst thing online journalism has given us.

The new design is definitely eye-catching, but does performance live up to the looks? Read on to find out.

Thank goodness he told me to read on, otherwise I would have skipped the rest of the story. At least he didn't end it with an exclamation mark. This is as egregious as the Continued on Next Page at the bottom of every comic I read as a kid. Did they think we didn't understand how books worked?

I love my Sennheisers. Only problem is the cord is like 800 feet long and jamming it in my pocket with my phone/mp3 player is kind of awkward when walking around outside. Then again sometimes that huge cord is really nice.

That is the only problem with wearing those behemoths outside of the house?

To be fair I really don't go outside all that much with them at all. My wife takes them to the park to chill out far more than I ever do. She probably looks kind of funny sitting on the swings with them on, but whatever. They sound nice.

Yeah plus the plug part is pretty big and obnoxious.

Just another reason purses rule.

Dude, in the dirty south, I use IEMs at home and cheaper IEMs on the go. Big headphones = headsweat = ewwwwww.

Also, UE for the win.

Finally a company finds out that you are supposed to direct sound INTO the ear. Why didn't anyone else think of that? Of course Apple would figure this out before any other company. How truly Audiotionary. Those three years of R&D were worth it. And that name!
That's not even what Ive said... It was more along the lines of 'intentionally directs sound into the ear' as opposed to just releasing sound AT the ear. The grills supposedly help proliferate audio in that way.

But thank god we're finally saying farewell to the old poshits.

I hate in ear ones. They fall out, ear wax sticks to them ugh. And they hurt my ears

These kind of look like a good compromise between the two styles. Quite interested

From the Apple page - "The audio quality is so superior, they rival high-end headphones that cost hundreds of dollars more." pretty big talk, I don't think the audio quality would be garbage if they're willing to make that claim

A change to the stock standard ear buds is good, they've always been quite awful. These look like an interesting mix of ear bud and iem, I'm curious to see how they sound.

I can't stand iem phones personally. I much prefer something like Yuin PK's, but most of the time I rock full size Beyers.

That said... that quote is just ridiculous. If they said something realistic like "the sound quality is much improved" I wouldn't be rolling my eyes right now.

I don't understand what's going on. No one's talking about how they actually sound, just pre-emptively talking shit. Are there any reviews?

Like I said, the quote is hyperbole, but I don't think they'd sound like garbage if they're willing to shower them with such effusive praise.

Not really no. There are just tech blogs offering previews, but I wouldn't trust any of them to actually go indepth nor understand what constitutes good sound. That coupled with the fact that a loud venue such as the Apple event is hardly an ideal environment to be auditioning phones anyhow.

So has anyone picked up a pair of these earpods? I was looking at them the other day at the apple store, and I was curious if they were that much better than the crappy earbuds that came with the 4S, so I went on the product page, but its filled with all 5 star ratings, and I am pretty sure those are Apple die-hards, so I was hoping someone here might have picked up a pair...

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Apple earbuds, or any earbuds made of rigid plastic, never comfortably fit in my ear.

Soft heads for life. I can fall asleep with these things in my ears.

Had a pair of earphones with silicon heads and they were so good. Hard plastic earphones hurt my ears after just a few minutes but i could keep the others in for hours.

yep, posted this in iPhone 5 thread since I didnt see this one:

So I just tried the new EarPods

man it was weird getting used to them, I wanted to put them in the other way (right to left ear) and then I wanted to fit them in the long way instead of the side haha.

They feel very sturdy and fit in smugly and are easy to take out and put in. The sound seems better, the big difference is how much clearer everything is. I can't really tell the difference in quality between them and the Sennheiser headset I use for gaming, but I'm not much of an audiophile

oh also the remote is much nicer

As they don't create a seal, I'm guessing they isolate sound bad. So they are not for me. I prefer to blast full volume and not making a sound around me.

I'd be more okay with using my giant Senns (HD-580s) outside of the house if they were closed. I'm going to give in and order a pair of Denon D-2000s sooner or later.

Wait, they discontinued them? ;_;

I actually think the new itunes update was the best thing to come out of that conference. I also thought every single new piece of hardware they introduced looked uglier than the previous model :/

Sound leaks at max volume but not a lot and reasonably high doesnt seem to leak much. They dont isolate much outside sound, if any, which I prefer since I use them at work but thats not for everyone

some measurements

http://rinchoi.blogspot.ca/2012/09/apple-earpods.html

of note: the frequency response is mostly linear with the expected drop off in sub bass and a little peak around 5K (lower treble region). honestly, not too shabby

the distortion is actually pretty good aside from the subbass region. the high subbass distortion is typical for buds under 50 bucks. Impulse response looks OK. I'd like to see some square wave responses but I guess we'll need to wait for innerfidelity to get them.

compared to the old buds (see link below, near bottom of that page), the measurements are better and would seem to back up Apple's claims of improved sound although perhaps not the bit about matching performance of headphones that cost "hundreds more" . not all measurements and scales are the same as the link up above.

555s were my headphone for years but I'd keep breaking the frame because I have a massive head. They're good though, even if the open sound design means you broadcast your audio to the rest of the train, they need to know what I'm listening to anyways.

I've switched to ATH-AD700, just as open but a lot more durable. IMO

I tried a bone-conduction headphone in a doctor's office once (my right ear canal is blocked up but I can still hear out of it). I remember the sound quality being really horrible but the Wired review says that it's better than previous bone-conduction headphones so maybe they're worth a try.

Those measurements would definitely indicate sound quality exceeding $20-60 earbuds. That's pretty dang awesome!

My mom has a bad memory for tech terms and has been calling earbuds "earpods" for years. I did a double-take when a first saw a news story announcing them.

I agree with the Gizmodo review, I think it's sort of cool that did this so that people who either don't know better or don't care have slightly better sound. It seems like an improvement they didn't have to do, I bet they could have called it a day after changing their appearance and most people would have liked them as much as they do now.

Can't say it's too exciting though, I'll never use a pair.

Techradar and Gizmodo were the lowest reviews seen:
http://gdgt.com/apple/earpod/

I think they should be reviewed separately in the context of pack-in buds and separately as for-sale items. As pack-in buds, they are pretty great, as separate for-sale items, they're a bad deal.

Interesting. I assume, then, that these are some of the best IEMs that come free with any smartphone?

Mine will never make it out of the box anyway, though.

Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10vi all day erryday. I might use them for gym abuse...but probably not. Bad audio can distract me from my workout.
