I used a health potion on the 1st level of Ninja Gaiden- am I screwed?

WHO DEY!?
I have heard of how legendary the difficulty is in this game, and being an old man now, I'm not as good at games as I used to be. Will using a single potion on the first level be my undoing???

No, you'll be fine. The first chapter is actually one of the tougher ones, simply because you are getting used to the control mechanics, not to mention the camera takes some getting used to, as well.

No. You'll reach some item shops a little later on where you can buy some more if you need them. I usually kept fully stocked up if I could, but once you get the beautiful flow of the action down (Usually occurs by stage 3, 4, or 5), you won't need them as much!

Now, I would be very careful about holding onto your Talisman of Rebirth until much later in the game when you can make enough money to stock up on them (I think the max is 3 you can have).

from a movie i seen the first level or whichever it was had terrible camera angles. mostly the camera is way too close to the ground. does this get better? what on earth were they thinking? it's not that hard to set the camera a bit higher. pfft

No. The game has a system of earning essence and using it to upgrade weapons and buy items, including potions.

In the event that you get stuck, you can always go back to an easier area and 'farm' essence to buy more potions.

Also, use ALL the save files available to you. There are parts where you can't reach a 'store' to get potions and you might not be prepared for what comes next. So backtracking a previous save can be a life saver.

Camera is perfectly fine. If you still think it is bad don't waste your time and play the game you already have the viewpoint in your head that it is bad.

Thanks Itakgi, make a game a good portion of poeple cant complete.

The higher difficulties are tough, yes. But normal is fine. Gamers give up to easily nowadays. We've become weak sauce if the game doesn't hold our hand the entire way. Once you reach stage 3 or 4 you should be getting into the flow of battle. Especially since you have the ability to upgrade your dragon sword on stage 3. I have a feeling Gaiden 2 is going to offer a lesser difficulty but I hope Team Ninja keeps an option for the challenge of the first for those who want to play it like it should be played.

the only parts of ninja gaiden that were really frustrating were alma and a few of the places with skeleton archers. everything else was do-able.

What's up, Wobe? Great to see you over here.

Hey hey, took me a few to get approved to post.

Level 6 with the helicopter on the Bridge I almost tossed the controller into the TV, and I'm a seasoned gamer, this game is just aggrivating at points.

I think the trick is to 'farm' essence at certain points and buff up your weapons as much as possible. As you start to get the hang of the fighting mechanics, the game gets easier. It is definately old-school in the sense that you must learn a particular skill set to progress- you cannot button mash the whole way through and expect a frustration-free experience. Which is also the most rewarding aspect of the game, in my opinion. My roomate would sit and watch me play the later levels- by that point, you get muscle memory on some of the moveset, and will get into 'the zone'. The resulting fight scenes are pretty spectacular. Just hang in there. :D

Definitely agree here. Making the first two bosses some of the hardest in the game, and then being able to coast through bosses (more or less) later to a certain point=WTF

I agree 100%. I don't consider myself an expert gamer or anything and I finished it.

Very true. I tried to fight Alma without any health potions... :lol. I had foolishly used all of them up, and I had no choice but to start over, since my brother saved over my earlier save point. With health potions, the fight was so much easier.

My thoughts exactly. The first two bosses alone are much harder than all but the later ones, IMO

And then Stage 7. But imo, the hardest level in the game for the first time through is Level 4 due to the distance between save points. First time I made it up to lvl 4 it got to the point when I had to restart cos I had no health potions left. After that I was set.

Definitely my personal GOTY.

No. This isn't Resident Evil now

Resident Evil games (which I barely even like!) have trained me to be a total miser with any power-up items. When I played through Ninja Gaiden, every time I used one of those "save from death" items, I assumed I was screwed and reloaded my game. When I found out you could only carry 3, I was a TINY bit more accepting (I'd not reload unless I lost more than one), but really, for half the game if I did a section badly, I'd just reload.

Then again, there's something to be said for a game that controls so well that when you do a section badly you feel it's your fault and there's room for improvement.

Boy, you aughta tie a hankerchiff soaked in kerosene 'round yer ankles before them ants eat your CANDY ASS.

Alma version 1 is definitely the hardest boss. I don't understand how the horse boss is so hard. Maybe you guys forgot that there is a block button :lol

I got stuck at the part where you have to go underneath the cathedral and the zombies wake up. Too much effort.

Exactly. I only played through Gaiden twice, but I still think it's one the most satisfying games I played this year. Specifically because of how it rewarded you for mastering the moveset.

Alma wasn't that hard because when I died it was due to me fucking up.

I was stuck on Alma 1 for a week, then i just magically did it without changing my strategy at all.

To the original poster, dont worry about finding the first levels hard, the game actually gets easier once you upgrade the dragon sword a bit and get some more of the magic, plus you learn the combos without even thinking about it.....You will scream a thousand lungs worth of death when you first meet the black ninjas though.

Hardest boss in the game? I had the most problems with Alma by far. The bubble trap and kick combo hurts like a mofo. And dodging the pillars she throw requires that you have the controls down pat (constantly re-centering, rolling, wall running and jumping). She's easy as cake now as is the majority of the game for me but she's brutal during that initial encounter.

Doesn't he spear you and drag you around like a Ninja Kebab even if you block?

Yeah, it couldn't be the fact that the camera prevents you from getting a proper lock on the guy, plus you have two other targets to worry about too, right?

Alma is a pussy. I've played and beaten her twice so far, using only a single Great Spirit Elixer the second time (which was several months later).
