I want to be able to use Switch 2 as a mini-pc/tablet out of the box.

With the new joycons pulling double-duty as a mouse, I really want to be able to get some extra functionality out of the Switch 2 other than just games. Maybe it won't be able to serve as a replacement for my iPad or phone, but for children, it could serve as an educational tool or a "my first PC" kind of vibe... OG Switch was severely lacking in this area. No web browser, no Netflix/media apps, no friends chat, no system themes even. However, after jailbreaking a switch, the Switch really comes into its own. It's a genuinely great little tablet! I use my OLED, and Switch Lite with OLED mod daily.

I think if Switch 2 was to be just a simple iteration of the Switch 1, just with more power, they would have released it back in 2023 like all the rumours predicted. It doesn't make any sense why they've let it cook for so long to just release a console with the exact same feature set but with more power. I hope they have taken this extra time develop an awesome SwitchOS, and move the hybrid concept in the direction of the PC, as a purely iterative Switch 2 is gonna be a hard sell imo.

What say you GAF? Would you like more media functionality from the Switch 2, or would you prefer if Switch 2 stayed focused just on the games, like Switch 1?

Nintendo would never ever allow this. If there's productivity software it will be utterly bizarre like all non gaming Nintendo software.

I think the joycon mouse is brilliant because PC games like Civ are surprisingly popular on Switch. I bet MS ports AoE series to Switch 2 too.

Sounds like you want a vTech friend

Nah, man, keep that media functionality OUT of my Switch 2

Papa Nintendo doesn't need to waste time trying to turn the Switch into some half baked tablet when it's meant for gaming. You want a web browser? Use your phone. Need Netflix? Get a TV. The moment Nintendo starts focusing on stuff like that, it takes resources away from what actually matters

And if you seriously think Papa Nintendo should waste time turning the Switch into a janky ass wannabe smartphone instead of perfecting their gaming experience, you deserve to be stuck using a Wii u in 2025

No, not interested in watching porn on my Switch 2, but Nvidia better fucking take this new chip and make a new Shield with it.

I Just wanna play the new Metroid on this thing.
Expecting Nintendo do release a device that will actually function as anything close to a PC is far fetched. And using those joy cons as a mouse looks terrible.
Give me Metroid and hopefully a new 3D Mario this year i'll be a very happy camper.

I don't understand why people who buy consoles expect to receive pc features on the thing, just buy a pc already there's plenty of form factor to choose from.

Eh? That's what most consoles are, no? Just upgrades of the previous version with more power. The PS5 is a more powerful PS4 with a SSD. That's it. I can't pull up a Word, Excel or start coding with Python on my PS5, because it's not a PC. It's a games console.

Best we'll get is better media support. Maybe apps like Prime Video or Spotify, but even that's a long shot.

I don't understand how a more powerful Switch will be a hard sell? We don't have this debate with other consoles, so why the Switch?

other consoles pride themselves on power in order to deliver game experiences with amazing graphics and "cinematic" framerates.

Nintendo games don't really need that kind of stuff because they're more focused on gameplay, so why do they need more power all of a sudden? What the hell will the new processing power accomplish that couldn't already be done on Switch 1?

I don't understand? If they want to release a new console then it needs to be more powerful than it's predecessor. Otherwise what's the point of upgrading? It also allows developers to put games out on the Switch 2 that wouldn't be possible on the OG Switch, thus making the Switch 2 more appealing to gamers.

That doesn't mean that they need to go hard with bleeding edge tech. I would love it if they did, but we need to be realistic. Nintendo haven't been in the power race with Sony and Microsoft for almost 20 years now, and besides the Wii U, it's paid off for them. They can release hardware that is capable, but doesn't cost the earth so they can make a profit on hardware as well as software.

For other consoles yes more power is the primary function. But with Nintendo a new gimmick is always expected. They're known for always trying to shake up the gameplay experience even if it doesn't always pan out. So making a new console where the gimmick is just "more power" after sticking it to the "more power" philosophy for years kind of rubs me the wrong way.

on the topic of the thread, nah. It's an android tablet so it wouldn't really do well with PC functionalities anyways. Just buy a handheld PC if you want that stuff, Switch is for a different audience and has different goals in mind.

Good luck if you think nintendo will have anything more than a barebones os. Not even a free paint app you will pay $60 for mario paint switch.

Nintendo are on track to outsell the PS2 and place the Switch as the best selling console in history. It's at what? over 150 million units sold? Clearly this is a successful formula. Why shake things up and do something wildly different when the Switch is such a success? That would be a massive risk that's not worth taking.

Remember the Wii and Wii U? The Wii sold over 100 million. It was Nintendo's most successful home console in a long time after the underperforming N64 and Gamecube. They then shook things up with the Wii U and offered a confusing concept with a tablet controller. The public rejected it, so they had to go back to the drawing board and struck gold with the Switch.

The Switch 2 will have more than just some power. We also have the controllers that function as a mouse, which is a 'lite' gimmick. It adds some new gameplay ideas, but it's still very much a Switch.

No need to rock the boat when you're on top. Remember, if it's not broke, don't fix it!

I always wanted Switch to have more tablet functionality as well. Mainly more streaming options and a web browser. Doesn't need to be an iPad Pro, but it could have more than what it has and not lose its identity.

Because gameplay over an unlocked 30fps at 720 is important… it's not 2015 anymore, it's time to move forward.

Nintendo had the last straw last gen with browser hack vulnerabilities and spamming dicks all over miiverse.

Now they have a companion phone app so you can't even communicate with anybody using a Switch.

It's a completely kid proof device.

Edit: until your kid opens the eshop
