This is very encouraging, I just hope there is some kind of official home-brew support for the PS3 system much like the PS2. I've had the PS2 Linux Kit for a year but have done next to nothing with it because of school and work commitments. At this point though I don't really even want to bother with it because it seems like such a dead-end architecture once the PS2 is out of the limelight. PS3/Cell development seems like it will possibly have many other applications outside PS3 if the Cell becomes pervasive in other areas of computing, so I'm much more interested in digging into it than slaving away at the EE and the VU's at this point.
Could someone that understands this stuff answer a few of my questions please?
1. Does this mean it could be possible for indie games like we have indie movies, you know were any person with an understanding of how to code on the cell will be able to make their own games?
2. Does this make it anymore easier for piracy like we had on the PS2?

I guess that depends on how easy it is to take advantage of the GPU as well. The system will be more than just the CELL. Although given the various inputs on the PS3, you might be able to recompile something to run off the PS3.

No, piracy will still probably necesitate a modchip. Look at the xbox - it pretty much runs on off-the-shelf PC parts and you still had to mod that or take advantage of an exploit in a game to have piracy on that.
This is opening up specs on the cell NOT the ps3. Nothing in there suggests ps3 dev kits, etc.
In fact, this will only bring the cell up to the same place where the x86 and PowerPC already are in terms of specs and software support.
The next problem is the hardware - how does someone get a copy that they can use? A add-on card to their PC, etc? Or do they expect sales of complete systems?
