I had satellite tv installed recently in my home and while flipping through channels, I managed to catch the tail end of a show called "Icons". What made me stop to watch it was that the whole 30 minute slot of this show consisted of interviews and discussion about the Metal Gear Solid games, their history and even the fandom itself.

I'm pretty naive to anything outside of local television, so I'm sorry if I come off sounding like I'm living in the dark ages here, but it totally blows me away that there is actually a show that would talk about a single videogame or series at length for 30 minutes on tv like this; especially MGS. Has anyone ever seen this show and do they know if it regularly showcases specific videogames or videogame series' like this? Are there are any others like it on satellite/Dish Network that I don't know about?

It's the best videogame show ever made. I have all of Seasons 1-4, and every episode keeps you glued (so long as you find videogames interesting). They always interview the guys who make the games, and you'll find out about some talent you never knew about, and some cool videogame facts as well. Really a great show.

It's on DVD? Sweet I should look it up.

I only saw one episode of it before I stopped getting G4 but I thought it was fantastic. And it was on DOA, a series I don't even care for that much. Amazing.

Yeah. They did one with Donkey Kong, and it was awesome seeing them show Miyamoto saying how Donkey Kong Country "Just proved that Americans have no taste in videogames and will buy absolute crap as long as it looks good." hahahah

Is there or isn't there a DVD? Because I'd be really interested in buying it. o_o I want to see them interview Hideo Kojima.

There is NO DVD.

I really wish they would put the shows on DVD. Maybe extend the shows, add the stuff that didn't make air and sell them from the G4 website.

Me too, especially since they're supposedly changing the format of the show to focus more on Hollywood luminaries. Would be nice to preserve the original spirit of the only good thing ever to air on G4.

On the flipside, what's with G4 turning that show into the village whore? The Icons: Splinter Cell episode does indeed start off with a testimonial on the series and why it's popular... but the second half is a "making-of Chaos Theory". And like most "makings-of", it's a giant circle jerk over how much better it is. Stuff like "but for Chaos Theory Ubisoft is taking things TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL!". Sure, that's how these features go (kinda like how previews rarely criticise a game), but that's why it should be kept out of a show like Icons.

And there's also an Icons: Dead or Alive. Which makes me shake my head and wonder what a game has to do to get in there. What, no Icons: Army Men?

EDIT: Oh yeah, and there's the shift towards more Hollywood stuff -- like the recent Frank Miller/Sin City one.

That's the sleazy darkside to this show, they did the exact same thing with the Doom episode. They have quite a history of doing stuff like this, but for the most part the whoring only happens like every blue moon.

If you like Icons, check out Game Makers. It's basically Icons without the history, for a game that's about to be released. So far they've done two, one for God of War and one for Jade Empire. Lots of behind the scenes footage and developer interviews, but it does come off sounding a little like a 30 minute commercial.
