I heard a version of this last Friday. A Trump supporter was telling people that the democrats planted people pretending to be neo-Nazis in the pro-Confederate side. When they say 60% of Trump supporters will stand by him regardless of what he does, its because of a world view that is wiling to believe anything to fit into the narratives they desire.
Obama and Soros invented racism and slavery. You heard it right, both of them are time travelers that decided they wanted to stick it to true American Freedom Fighters by making them look bad going back in time to create both racism and slavery, tie it to the Confederacy, and make it seem like the GOP are to blame.

Like Sandy Hook Trutherism, this theory was made up by people who don't to face the truth that their promotion of violence led to something horrible happening. They're fucking cowards who don't have the balls to admit that they're fine with innocents being killed over their cause.

Every time a state or national rep opens their mouth and says stuff like this, I'm reminded that sometimes the Founding Fathers' fundamental unease with pure democratic government was warranted.
Strangely enough I've never encountered it, though. Why holocaust denial would be such a big thing when we have far better records and video and pictures in comparison, I dunno.
Usually there's no denial about slavery, they just do stuff like deflect from the horrors by pointing out that slavery was way worse in the Caribbean. Then there's the "blacks had it better when they were slaves" racism/paternalism thing. But no, I've never heard anyone deny it.

IMO part of this is wanting to believe in a "real" truth that is buried beneath the surface, because that means they've uncovered something, which in turn means they're smarter than everyone else. This is important because in reality they're the dumbest among us. Knowing the real truth gives them a reason to hold their heads high. It's a reaction to an inferiority complex taken to an extreme.

They're influencing textbooks. A McGraw Hill history textbook tried calling slaves "workers" when discussing immigration patterns. Textbook makers often go out of their way to try not to offend white southerners, so they constantly put in lies and misinformation when it comes to slavery's role in our history.
