Idea for RTS games

So I really want to like RTS games, but one thing always keeps me from liking them. I guess it's that I'm too lazy, or just too laid back. Like, I really like the concept, but since it's possible to go ridiculously fast zipping around to 15 different locations using keyboard shortcuts and whatnot, competitive people do. And since it gives you an advantage, to make the game fun for people developers make the CPU go fast, and then suddenly everyone has to play fast.

Well for me personally that's too hectic and you spend so much time blinking to different parts of the map directing everything that you often can't even enjoy watching the battles which is a major part of the coolness for me. The alternative is turn-based strategy games, which are fun, but they are an entirely different beast and miss a certain appeal that real time games have. Few give the feel of a real battle going on when you submit your turn, and it's harder to be surprised by your opponent.

So I got this idea... what if you had an RTS where you could only give out so many commands at one time, or like you could only give one command every ten seconds or something? That would force everyone to slow down, but it would also force you to think about your commands and make sure you have the most effective one. If you sent troops in to fight from a bad direction, you wouldn't be able to fix the issue until 10 seconds later and you'd lose some.

What do you think of this idea? Would those of you who go blazingly fast (pretty much any RTS player, I guess) think of a game like that as boring? Or would you like the increase in thoughtfulness and ability to watch the battles a bit more? If you think about it, such a game would train you to be more effective in your commands for the faster games, too.

Or maybe as an adjustment of that same idea you could get one development command and one battle command every 10 seconds, and if you are busy developing you could stock up battle commands, so approaching the enemy and getting into the battle would be smoother, but once you're in the heat of it you don't have as much micromanagement ability (like real war)

That's called lag. I think it would mostly be frustrating, rather than adding something interesting to the combat dynamic. If you really want to watch the battles, just save a replay game.

That would be cool, but I would maybe make that an option in a skirmish because most of the fun of RTS is keeping up with large scale attacks while trying to keep your barracks pumping out guys etc. But that's just my opinion.

I thought you were going to suggest making an RTS without a mini-map, which I thought might actually be a cool idea.

Having a limit on commands though would be pretty annoying, imo.
