I don't understand this "if it's successful" business. There already are a ton of fighting games on PS5, basically every major franchise accounted for, a ton of arcade compilations, a ton of arcade-style games. Like dozens of them at least. It's successful now.
It's interesting Sony is releasing an arcade stick five years into the PS5's launch, but I think you're reading too much into it.
Because you don't see the bigger picture here. I agree that it isn't about some arcade game revival.
It's about Sony investing (yes, investing) in multiple key areas of gaming and making sure they have a presence in those key areas. It doesn't matter if you come out day one or year 5.
If it is successful as in if it sells well on PS5 and PC, Sony will probably come out with another model for PS6 and probably a leverless model.
Sony released a Dual Shock 4 back button attachment. It sold well and that lead to the DualSense Edge. That controller has had tremendous success on the market.
If this is affordable and high quality, it could lead to more people buying them and a larger fighting game market, which could lead to the return of franchises like Soul Calibur and/or Dead or Alive. If more casual gamers buy fight sticks, it's good for the fighting game market.
It'll also probably encourage Sony to try more things like a HOTAS, a racing wheel, an official keyboard and mouse...
If Sony came out with an official keyboard and mouse, maybe games like Civilization would have KBM support like Age of Empire/Mythology and more RTS would release on console... This is the stuff that can actually increase TAM on the margins.
