'If the PSP network becomes stable, we'll develop PSO for PSP'

Phantasy Star Universe wäre für einen Handheld wie PSP nicht geeignet. Wenn das Netzwerk allerdings stabiler wird, könnte er sich vorstellen, Phantasy Star Online für PSP umzusetzen. - Yuji Naka

Crap translation: Phantasy Star Universe wouldn't be suitable for the handhelds. If the (PSP) network becomes stable, we'll develop PSO for the PSP. - Yuji Naka

DS, PSP, I don't care which it's made for, just give me portable PSO!

Although, I really would like a DS version of PSO Episode III Card battle.

No, it's from the latest issue of EGM - there's even the front page scan at the Gamefront. Somebody better get that issue ASAP.

Weren't they talking about a PSO for the DS previously? Or was that just a rumor?

Considering that I could play PSO on my DC just fine with an unstable, slow dial-up connection, I'm sure both the DS and the PSP networks could handle it without problems. Communication and item management would be far easier on the DS, much like in Animal Crossing DS, so I don't see why the PSP would be the target, if anything.

PSO Ep. III I'd love to see go handheld, but the rest of the series is horribly, horribly broken and to add insult to injury, all the fixes are in the PC version of PSO. If they can't do server-side saves in a PSP version, then it isn't worth a damn.

It was just rumors, never anything really from ST. The PSP is going to have a keyboard released for it, so communication shouldn't be a problem either.

i'd rather have PSO hit the DS. it would be godly.

on the fly menus, chat, and well, everything that doesn't have to do with actual gameplay.

they could probably get a decent port of Episode I on there considering those levels didn't have much going on. character models weren't anything special either.

PSO for PSP would rock since I never got to play it on Dreamcast. PSP has the same controls as the Dreamcast controller and the game can most likely look like the dreamcast PSO as well. In addition to some USB keyboards in the works for the PSP like:

PSO on the Go! Gunstar77 and Wario will never leave their PSP's. Capcom just needs to make Monster Hunter PSP with WiFi for 4 players and I'll be in heaven :)

Decent in terms of how it plays or how it looks? Because it could do a good one gameplay wise, but visually compared to previous games? Not at all.

I wonder what he means when he says "stable".

Well the PSP network is sort of up in the air.

"What you say! But it has stuff already running on it!"

Allow me to explain. I was talking to some Sony PSP Dev's at GDC, basically asked them about how Sony was handling online etc, (these were first party dev's btw, not 3rd) and they told me flat out that they had to do it on their own. This is a Sony 1st part developer. They were left on their own to handle their own networked solutions. Basically Sony has no online platform, they just tossed developers a wifi connection and said 'have at it' (the same way they handled the PS2 really).

Shit, even Nintendo has a friggin' online platform (middlewear, support, unified infastructure) for the DS. While I appreciate Sony's laisse Faire approach I think its going to bite them in the ass. I think Xbox Live has shown that in the console space at least. Having unified Middleware and a dependable working solution for online gaming is a lot more enticing to developers than just handing them a connection and telling them to work it out themselves.

duh doy.

visuals would be the only problem here. that aside, i see no reason why this wouldn't be the best version of the game as far as gameplay goes. the touch screen would allow for the game to be played without any kinds of interuptions that there was when playing Episode I & II on GameCube (or Dreamcast). the game would feel soooo much more intuitive and natual with the touch screen used for menus, chat, and any other non gameplay related stuff.

the flow of the gameplay would be a million times better. flow = most important thing in a game to Naka from what i remember him saying.

D-pad for character movement might be frustrating in PSO when it comes to moving around (especially mid-battle), and selecting targets. Despite the advantages of the touchscreen for menus and stuff, I'd still probably go for PSP for a more traditional PSO experience. Both in terms of how it plays and how it looks.

how would it play any different on DS? the touch screen would just make things more convinient.

but hey, if you like tradional same old PSO, more power to you. great game.

It's the same thing:

EGM: Do you think a game like PSU would work on a handheld?

YN: I literally don't think it's possible to put PSU on PSP, as we're using the full power of the PS2. But if the network gets better and it's stable, maybe we could conceive of porting PSO to PSP. It's very interesting, but we don't have enough people to do that at this point.

As I said in the first part of the post, I don't think playing PSO with a d-pad would be that great. And that combined with the hit the game would take graphically would probably push me towards a PSP version.

But PSO on either DS or PSP doesn't really excite me as much as it could do now that PSU is on the horizon.

Did they say anything about what may or may not be planned? Did they know?

Well, actually it was part of a larger rumor that partially came true. Specifically that PSO DS and Puyo Fever DS were in the works.

On the other hand, PSP is rather prefect for DC ports (both in system capabailities and control interface)... how about PSO for both?

On PSP, I'd rather it added voice chat than need that awkward keyboard though.

From the sound of it nothing. Sony's usual MO is to wait until someone makes a really nice solution for their platform, then they buy it up / adapt it for wider use.

I think they're just figuring that hey, it works for PCs, and it worked for the PS2 (for what little support there was).

Basically I'd expect Sony's 1st party, Capcom, and Square to push online stuff.
