IGN "Complaints are mounting about the Nintendo and PlayStation storefronts promoting samey-looking cash-grabs. But what’s really going on?"

I mean it is an issue but IGN is irrelevant.
I'm not on the Sony store bur the Eshop is basically unusuable.

I wish they had a "curated" shop and then a wild wild west shop. The current shop is wild wild west. A more currated shop with deals and well reviewed games would be great. A s Of right now I use Deku Deals to look into the esphop.

???

Only devs could to want publish anything. Gamers only not and those are not to blame there.

You're wrong.

Go back and follow the discourse on the forums at the time. The gaming media were shitting on Sony and MS for curating games on their store. Devs were coming out and bitching that their shitty indies games didn't get greenlight for sale on PSN and/or XBL but were allowed on Steam.

Gamers on the forum were collectively on the side of the devs, wanting Sony and MS to open up their walled gardens, because, "why should some exec at PS or Xbox get to decide if a game is good enough quality on my behalf?"

Gamers are totally to blame because they wanted this.

Just create shovelware first-person, grid-based dungeon crawlers and I'd buy every single of them. Somehow it's the genre that has probably the least amount of thrash around, I guess nobody wants to compete against Minecraft.

when physical was king, producing copies cost money, so there was more financial risk, so companies didnt just plaster the wall with shit and hope something would stick... they actually had to try a little.

ps1 library probably got the most slop, but any online marketplace is 10000x worse.

thought nintendo would be the one to actually have standards, but nope.

Except my functioning brain deduced all of this for myself years ago. Do we need someone else to tell us something we can know for ourselves?

These games are absolute trash and they bury potentially good games. I search for these specifically and it spit out 6 Pages of them on PSN.

Gamers and devs collectively begged for this.

I remember during the PS3 days where devs endlessly bitched and moaned about Sony gamekeeping their online store by not allowing any Tom, Dick and Harry to publish slop on it. Sony tightly curated content they would sell on their store and the media fucking tore them a new one over it because, "b-b-but... steam".

So, Sony figured, why spend the valuable resource and time curating content for the store when gamers and devs want to just be able to publish anything, despite the fact that this would self-evidently result in an avalanche of horseshit asset flips and Trophy-whore games?

Congratulations gamers! You got your wish. Don't start bitching about it now.
This is accurate, I remember the conversations being made about this exact topic on the official playstation forums.
Gaming media have no fucking clue what they want.

I doubt there’s anyone on this forum, or at least anyone who would admit to it, but if you’re buying those games for the 30 second platinum trophies. What the fuck are you doing and why the fuck are you doing it?

I've done it lol. I am not a trophy or Platinum hunter, but I've had a few too many drinks and then laughed at pressing the same button for two minutes and getting a Platinum trophy since it pisses people off.

(Not my proudest moments, but at least I'm honest about it?) :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Sony was supposed to deal with "samey-looking cash-grabs" created primarily for trophy hunters. They aren't doing shit, the store is still flooded with tons of crap and it makes it easy to miss some indie gems that can't rely on the usual spotlight in gaming media.

All right, but I mean you bought a few of them maybe. I’ve bought My Name is Mayo. I’m talking about the people who buy lots of them, and have like 6,000 platinums consisting of mostly shovelware.

Nah I'm not that bad lol. I just wanted to admit it since most people will not admit to it, as you said. Yes, I've bought a handful of them maybe. I have the Mayo games, and two or three of the Jumping games.

Xbox is the only store that managed to avoid this issue and ended up being also the worst performing console this gen. I guess it's pretty clear that this problem is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

Nintendo’s storefront is worse because it’s slower, so it takes you much longer to shuffle around the shovelware. PSN is just sad. You’ll see one high quality game in a sea of trash. They need some quality control. I remember when Square-Enix claimed they put together some team to assess games for a certain quality.

It’s good for the person wanting to start out in the industry, but God I wish I could filter it out of my storefront.

There was a point a few years ago where my daughter would only nap in the car. I used to buy some of those quick hit games from Ratalaika that you could finish in a single session to play on my Vita while she napped. I have a couple of those My Name is Mayo, Bouncy Bullet type platinums but the current crop of AI shovelware on PSN makes those look like AAA games. It's an issue now, it's hard to find new releases and upcoming games. I went on there to wishlist Forza and I had to search for it to find it. Same with a few recent releases I was waiting for, if I didn't know they were releasing that day, I wouldn't have found them.

The Nintendo eShop is not navigable because it runs like crap. On a Switch they could improve their recommendation engine and implement curators, user reviews, user tags, etc to crowdsource curation and it'd be unusable on a Switch. PlayStation/Xbox, there was way less content back in the PS3/360 days but it didn't take long even with higher barriers for those digital game stores to be all about what people recommend on reddit and youtube. Now with more open storefronts, they pretty much all need crowdsourced curation

Who is trying to wade through the slop? This is such a non-issue.

If I am buying something off of the store, I either know exactly what I am looking for, am browsing preorders, looking at the deals page, or in very rare cases looking through recommended titles. These are all curated experiences and don’t require that I scroll past 75 glorified screensavers.

Yes I wish there was a way to remove all this slop or to segregate it into it’s own dedicated section because it’s making it hard to search and find normal games on the stores.

Yeah, because there's no shovelware on pc and elsewhere.

Not the point.
Steam, GOG and the Xbox store are less likely to bombard your "latest" page with shovelware because there seems to be a system of recommendations and/or moderation that pushes those shovelware titles down the stack or limits how many show up.

eShop and PSN its like theres no moderation and since these devs can pump out 100s of these games, they clog up discover pages.

All these games are on steam. Well the random ones I spent 30 seconds checking are. And schoolboy simulator looks like a legit game, running away from angry dad and studying or something. kind of hilarious someone made a game about their childhood.

There has been a ton of shovelware for a long time on all platforms. Its not the issue the issue is there is no curation. Also we used to have good people working that did the psblog and community stuff.
This was key in the ps3 era with Quore, PSBLog, Psn Podcast, etc... Once Sony got their audience back from Xbox, a lot of this stopped. Eventually they went woke and stopped catering to the people in the ps3 era that got them back on top. Shame.

Your post makes no sense... you just said the devs and media complained and gave Sony shit for not allowing shovelware crap on the store so why are the gamers the ones getting the stick when they didn't wish for it in the first place!
No, gamers did "wish for it" out of platform warring and genuine naivety. The PCMR was acting all high and mighty because Valve's permissibility gave them access to shovelware that's only value was not being on other platforms, with the most minor handful of actual stuff worth getting. Xbox fanboys also hyped up the number of indies on XBLG right up until they started calling the PS4 the IndieStation.

Worth mentioning that most of these indie gems mostly came out a year after Steam on PS, or on the same day if you're talking about the PS4.

Some people were just going along with the games media's populist LARP, which I think had pretty clear ulterior motives.

In fairness some of you clowns see a Japanese visual novel and start crying shovelware.
At the end of the day someone needs to curate- which in case of GOG was an ignorant xenophobic Slav.
