IGN episode 3 review

6.0 Presentation
There are a few unlockables that just happen to spontaneously unlock and the game incorporates poorly compressed clips from the movie to complement its many in-game cutscenes.
6.5 Graphics
Lots of animations and the occasionally finely combed environment come alongside poorly handled animation transitions, obvious glitches and a good bit of "rather bland."
7.0 Sound
Yes, the music and effects are great. Right, it's Star Wars. We know already. But look who's still speaking? The dialogue needs to be sealed in a box and left on the surface of the sun for our safety.
4.0 Gameplay
So we didn't give the player any responsiveness. Hmmm, maybe it'll pass as a feature? You know, we can always shovel the player into horribly laid out levels so that it won't be so noticeable.
3.0 Lasting Appeal
Let's unlock stuff so that we can never bother with it. Oh goodie. At least the game's only three to five hours long.
4.5 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

It's the same score for both PS2 and Xbox

I saw someone playing it at EB..didnt look 4.5 bad

It's 4.5 bad if you hate all things Star Wars and despise console-style games.

This is the same guy who thought that Monolith Software (Xenosaga) was the same Monolith Productions who made Shogo and had to quickly re-record his dialog for a video review when the kids on the IGN boards went nuts with laughter.

I beat the game late last night.

You can read my impressions about it right here

IGN pretty much nailed it. Even though I love the Star Wars franchise, even the prequels, I'm not going to make any excuses for what turned out to be a turd wrapped in a Jedi robe.

From the movies and trailers I watched, this game didn't look too bad. Plus it was from the Collective and according to GAF they were a really good developer.

If this game got 4.5, I fear the fate of the Episode 3 game for the DS.

Gamespy gave it 4 stars

Nah, the DS game will get a decent review because it's being reviewed by someone who isn't bitter and doesn't like to trash a game just to make a name for himself :)

The only reason to play through the campaign is probably to spoil the movie. And yet it doesn't even do that particularly well. The game intentionally omits a great deal of the fiction's critical scenes -- as they were told by the official book I've read, at least -- and instead fills space with a bunch of flashy action sequences. Fine. Great. Terrific. But why must we also be subjected to the repetitious in-game whining of Anakin and the dry jabs of his stoic master? Balance that force, fellas.

From the IGN Roundtable two days ago:

George Lucas looks like a walrus and his movie is going to suck because I read the book and it sucked! But, I suppose I can still dig the 20 minute Anakin versus Obi-Wan fight scene even if it will cost me 10 bones in movie tickets and 100 units of pride.

Yea, he's not someone who wants to hate it.

This man should be fired.

I finished it today and I liked it quite a bit, but I would give it around a 7, 7.5 due to the fact that it's short and the lock on system is a bit shitty, making you attack in undesired directions by accident.

Also I wished they would've scrapped all the mid fight cutscenes or at least come up with a way to make the transition smoother. There's nothing worst that being in the middle of a combo with a boss character and some stupid cutscene kicking in to let me know that were moving to another fighting level or room.

The game is no where near as bad as Army Men: Sarge's War, Catwoman, Grooverider: Slot Car Thunder, The Dukes of Hazzard: Return of the General Lee, and Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue which are the other 4.5 scoring Xbox games on IGN.

Good man.

Is senor Ivan Sulic someone that usually writes angry reviews for shit's n giggles? I don't keep up with any of these people..

He's the biggest MGS hater ever, and up until 2 weeks before mgs3 was to be reviewed, ign decided to make someone else review the game, in light of a huge petition

so did george lucas rape ivan sulics' childhood, too? haven't played the game, but i've seen the demo. looked to be the same forumla EA used for the the LotR hack'n'slash games which isn't that bad a thing (not something i like personally but i know a lot of people who do)

Bought the Xbox and DS versions yesterday

Xbox version is really fun but a lil repetitive.... I like it a lot... IMO there is not much difference between this and the LoTR games... nice job for a movie game and I am enjoying it... The dooku battle was awesome...

The DS version reminds me of Double Dragon for Super Nintendo sooooo much.... only played it for about 40 min.. liked it a lot... brings back memories of 16 bit TMNT/DD games.... ill be playing it more tonight on a trip to LA....

Last Star Wars game i did enjoy was "Shadow of The Empire" on the N64 when it came out and it didn't age very well now...

Why are you doing this to me Lucas? ;(

um...so you're telling me kotor, rogue leader, republic commando, or battlefront did nothing for you? i won't argue that they're all great games but they're generally thought to be solid or better.

No, those all sucked because they were Star Wars. Any other license and they'd be great.

I suspect the movie will suck because the book sucked. So DarthBrian (great name for someone who calls other people biased, by the way), how does me not digging the book and subsequently suspecting the movie to be a stinker because of that fact make me predisposed to hating the game?

Your "A to B to let's jump all the freaking way to Y" kind of logic makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The booked sucked. The book was based off the movie. Thus, the movie will likely suck. Coincidentally, the game sucks.

Whether you believe me or not is your own problem. Buy it and convince yourself it's awesome if that's what you please. That's cool with me.

:lol

I aggree that Rogue is good but most other games i didn't really like or cared. Like in the case of Kotor per example, i don't own an Xbox and i don't play games on my PC.
I wish to play an adventure type of game under the Star Wars franchise.

The Collective should have been working another Buffy,Indy or an Angel game.

They will probably do the Indy 4 game and since the script is finalized and they will start shooting next year, they may even be doing some pre-production on the game.

We will probably not see another Buffy game since the second one flopped.

Yeah, Eurocom pretty much killed any chance of another Buffy with that subpar effort with Chaos Bleeds. Another Indy game? I would preorder tomorrow if this were confirmed.:) Thanks for that info. Hope it turns out true.

ah, gotcha. yeah, most recent star wars games have been more action based than adventure. kotor would be the exception...but, yeah, xbox/pc only.

How does this game compare with the Collective's Indiana Jones game? That game had some hokey scenarios and was a little buggy, but I enjoyed the BEU and platforming elements (esp. those involving the whip). It's hard to imagine an EPIII game based on the same engine turning out to be crap.

Jeez, ManaByte, you don't have to defend every Star Wars product :P

The only explanation for the review is knee-jerk Star Wars hate. The game is nowhere near that bad, and is actually one of the better SW games in recent years. The combat system is surprisingly complex, but I expect most people (including this guy) will just button mash until they die or win.

It's a solid 6 game at least, good concepts just feels a little rushed. And the levels do suck, EVERY SINGLE 'puzzle' involves you sticking your lightsaber through a panel or a door

If they make a sequel to this game based on the Clone Wars with full coop + some fixes to all the complaints people had with this game then I'd be all over it. Heck may as well take the whole thing cell shaded and use the CN series as a template for the artwork.

One thing is for sure though, the episode III footage in game is pretty damn captivating.

As it is I'd give it a 7 or so (I kind of dig the boss fights).
