IGN: Half Life 2 Is Gold (XBOX)

Is this the last AAA title on the box? Any hits in December? EA Sports titles?

Oh yeah, should've been a 360 title.

Looks UGLY ?! Stop smoking crack. The Xbox has 64megs of frikken RAM you clown. Try running HL2 on a PC with that much ram and tell me if it looks/plays better.

I'm not comparing it to PCs, I'm comparing it to other XBOX titles like Halo 2 and Chronicles of Riddick.. There's no comparison. It looks ugly.

The texture quality on the models is the only thing I see that could possibly be considered ugly.

They should have just ported this to 360. It comes out 1 week before launch.

So what if you have more than 64megs of RAM? :(

The game looks great on Xbox and plays even better. I played the PC version through 3 times and can't wait to get it on Xbox.

"Yeah!"

This will soon be sitting near Serious Sam2 and Far Cry,can't wait. :D

Btw-to me Halo2 isn't the best looking shooter on the XBox nowdays,FarCry is. :)

can't wait to get this. i have never played nor seen half-life 2 in action because a) my computer can barely run half life 1, let alone hl2, and 2) since there was never any possibility for me to play the pc version, why would i download videos to see how it looked? :D

screens look great to me though.

Halo 2? Oh come now.

Yeah, comparing Halo 2 to Half Life 2 PC shots really helps :D

Here's an XBOX shot that tells a completely different story..

The environment/character geometry and textures are rather poor for an XBOX last gen title. To each their own, of course, but I'm not sold :)

Anyway, I played it on PC so I'm probably spoilt and biased because of that.

You would be right, if the shot I posted was a PC shot. It isn't.

And I don't know what screen you posted, but it isn't showing up. The one I posted articulates the comparison quite well, anyway, and like epmode said, Half-Life 2 has far, far superior art design that puts it on another level, regardless of technical merit.

Your screenshot is captured at 1024x640 resolution, it very obviously has MSAA on (check the power lines), high resolution textures and at least trilinear filtering or probably better going on. That can be no ingame screenshot from the XBOX, it's very likely a pre-rendered scene. If it is in-game, and the game runs at a decent framerate, I hang my head in shame and apologize, but please check out the screenshot I posted, it should be available now.. The two are most certainly not the same game..

Considering your screen is in a screen resolution the xbox can't produce and has antialiasing and ansiotropic filtering which the xbox also cannot produce, but hey keep convincing yourself that isn't a shot from the PC version.

Questionable texturework aside, Half-Life 2's art/sound/world design >>>>>>>>>> Halo 2's. It's not even close.

At the risk of turning this into a further Halo 2 vs. HL2 debate, I have to diasgree with the world design asepct. Art and Sound are thing are up for grabs as well, but Halo 2 trumps Half Life 2 in terms of the level layout and pacing.

Half Life 2 has a decent setup, but at least on the PC side of things you were stuck LOADING every 30 feet. I'd imagine on the Xbox it'll be every 15 feet.

Am I missing something here?

Check Schafer's post. Try for a real comparison, not PR propaganda. I can easily find a PR Halo 2 shot that looks ten times better than the one you "found".

Double standards for the win, eh?

I've got the fucking game on the PC and play it handily at the maximum graphical settings, I don't need to convince myself of anything. The screen is from GameSpot's page for the Xbox version of the game. Don't be an ass.

Load times are unfortunate, I agree.

However, according to Valve, the Xbox port will actually have less loading than the PC version, due to engine optimizations. We'll know for sure in a few weeks.

they haven't updated their screens since may 2004, if I were to search for an accurate representation of HL2 on xbox, I wouldn't look there

It's not about being an ass, it's not even about comparing HL2 on Xbox to HL2 on PC.

It's about you posting probably the worst possible Halo 2 shot ("clean and uncut") and comparing it to a photoshopped to hell and back again HL2 shot. That isn't quite helping your argument (that HL2 is the best looking Xbox game).

And that would be the first time we've seen pre-renders listed among screenshots on an online review site.. because it just doesn't happen. Ever.

ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THOSE SCREENSHOTS ARE FROM MAY 2004 WHEN THE XBOX PORT WAS NOT EVEN IN ITS INFANCY..

Well, fuck, I'm sorry. GameSpot is all I really go to for media, and I honestly didn't know.

I personally still think Half-Life 2 looks better from purely a visual standpoint, but I see I was wrong in respect to the Xbox version. You don't have to acuse me of fucking double standards and what not, though.

I am totally getting it. Surround sound and HDTV demand it. I hope it's backward compat though, since it's terribly inconvenient timing-wise.

I think it will look and play great on the XBOX. Doom 3 also looked straight terrible in screenshots, but once moving, it was suprisingly accurate on the box. If you focus on any of the smaller details, you'll see where corners were cut, but while playing, these things won't become nearly as much of a problem.

I agree I was shocked at how much more I enjoyed Doom3 On the Xbox over my PC. I noticed things were not as clean looking but the use of the XBox controller and being able to play in the TV room was great. HOpefully this turns out as well as the Doom port did.

I actually saw this game running at Digital Life a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if it was a Demo (I think it was the whole game though), but the game did not look smooth in motion. I think it was running at 30FPS. But I could be wrong. Fact is, whoever is hoping that this looks like the PC version, stop.

Doom3 turned out very well, gave me some hope for HL2 since I much prefer a controller, I have similar hopes

The last time I saw HL2 in action for the XBOX was about a month ago and it couldn't hold a steady framerate to save it's life. But considering all the ridiculously high praise it's getting from critics, that may have gotten ironed out.

If so, kudos to Valve because those were some pretty god damned big wrinkles.

yes, it appears the framerate has been worked out beautifully, thats usually the last thing a dev works on during the dev cycle i believe.
