My comment was more aimed at OP. This article was discussed months ago here on neogaf.
We are in 🐌 week of gaming. People need little bit outrage.

Its still interesting topic though.

People need to realize, these companies aren't their friends.

I bought switch 2 days ago, because switch emulator on my pc, was yucky. Now I have to be very selective of the games there. Because a 2017 game, cost 60$, while God of war 2018 cost 10$ on sale, normal 20$. Their new remaster is costing 60$.

This is why, I dont worship any of these companies. They will do, what ever it takes, to take them fun out of gaming, and charge you all the pennies to make more money.

Even xbox has gamepass, a recurring revenue to them. You will get alot of free games. But you will still be locked on that system, because you don't want to stop playing free games. Same reason why I can't cancel my Netflix. There is 7 accounts for the whole family, just for 20$ a month. Who is gonna cancel that sweet deal.

Do IGN research anything at all? Like literally fucking anything about the checks this does for first plays?

I dunno, people seemed to believe them when they were coming to the conclusion that Xbox was selling better in India based on interviewing anonymous gaming store owners in the country.

Well, Gamepass is just DRM with better PR.....

The push for DRM by Microsoft never stopped IMO.
Well said! A monthly subscription service with a rotating list of games, where all first party games are included permanently, is basically identical to the Xbone's console-level 24 hour online DRM check! I mean, sure, Gamepass is an optional service no one has to use, and you can play games downloaded via Gamepass offline for 30 days, but its basically the same thing! Wake up, sheeple!

I have been a gamer since the original Nes. I remember my family having an Atari, Intellivision, and Colecovision. I have personally owned every console besides a ps5 (and not for a lack of trying to get one). I have never, ever....ever, ever, ever....had a problem playing a game (digital or physical) on any console....EVER (unless the console or games were damaged).

Has anyone here had a problem where a game won't play? What games? What system?

It's kinda true.

Yesterday my Internet stopped working (maintenance or something), I turned on my Series S and went to play State of Decay 2 after work... Guess what? I couldn't.

I had to connect to the internet with my mobile plan, then select Play offline (something like that) on the settings for me to be able to play it. The quick resume thing stopped working and when I was about to load my save the console warned me that I could lost the progress from last time because the console couldn't connect to the internet.

I was like? WTF? And yes! The console is activated on the account.

I said screw this and I turned off the Xbox and went to play on my Ps4... That is able to play everything I own digitally without the internet.

It was my first bad experience with the Xbox Series S since owning it from launch...

I hope that MS changes this, because it fucking sucks.... On the bright side, it was the first time this year that my home internet plan had an issue, which makes this kinda enlightening, since I always thought that the Xbox worked offline just like the Ps4.

it would have been better if it was all offline but this sounds like a good compromise to have as long as it's going to work offline past the first launch.
it's true that most of us have access to the internet 99% of the times but it specially makes those downtime moments that much harder to deal with.

the topic of drm and game preservation is a long and complicated one and it deserves all the attention it gets and them some.

This is at worse, an inconvenience and only applies to disc based games.

While you can't play an Xbox game after installing the disc, I can't see many people if any not having internet access for their Xbox (or any console for that matter) because regardless of it being a pre-order bonus, DLC, season/expansion pass content, etc. you're going to need an internet connection. Of course, with internet access, the solution is simple. After installing the game disc, you start the game while connected online which is what I do after downloading the day one patch because there's well, always a day one patch and once I get to title screen, I go back to dashboard and quit the game. Unless I uninstall and then reinstall the disc based game, I am good for the entire duration of me playing that game even if it's months later. So again, it's an annoying inconvenience but not a major issue mainly due to games having a day one patch nowadays anyway.

Also, I don't know why people are attacking Microsoft for game preservation. First, I thought people here, on other sites and Twitter don't play old games so nothing to preserve if that's the case and second, you can't play a PS3 game (disc or digital) on your PS5 nor can you play a Wii U game (disc or digital) on your Switch.

Funny how whenever there's a negative against Microsoft and Xbox, it gets blown out of proportion but yet if Sony and/or Nintendo do the same or in this case, worse, no one seems to bitch about it. Gee, I wonder why.

With all of that said, should you be able to play a disc based game on Xbox without require an internet connection of any kind? Absolutely. But is a major issue or big deal? No. Like, not even close. If it was a decade ago, perhaps and twenty years ago, definitely but now, nah. If Sony/Nintendo had this same issue, not a single person would be bitching about it whatsoever.

Is their argument that backwards compatibility isn't native? Of course it isn't.
It’s native on PS5.

Imagine being pissed at Microsoft, when they brought compatibility with Xbox 360 and Xbox (even if plenty of games are not supported) while Sony is just pretending that PSOne, PS2 and PS3 does not exist outside of streaming and I won't even try to talk about Nintendo.

Tell that to the 420 comments for 10 fucking €/$ for the GoT upgrade or the multiple threads whining about the ANNOUNCED contents of the latest SoP.
Or all the negative discussions regarding the Switch OLED.

How can the article have been discussed weeks ago if it was written yesterday? The topic has resurfaced because of Phil's recent comments on preservation.
Lmao. IGN (because they have nothing else to talk about) are specifically referring to a video done by modern vintage gamer. We discussed this previously here:

So is the article incorrect, and IGN haven't been called out on it?

Should be brought up and they need to change the article if it's incorrect.

I'm a little confused because I can play my games offline even install a disc and play that offline too & my digital titles offline too.

Is that because I have my console set to home? Or am I missing something here.

For titles that have both Xbox one and series versions of games though, you do need to download the series X version.

Or is this some sort of misleading fear mongering?

Because obvious future titles that don't have Xbox one versions won't have this issue where you download the enhanced version.

Seems like a non story imo.

This is the future many on here and in the wider gaming community are happy with. Streaming. Subscription services. It’s all designed so you own nothing and they own you. I sometimes wish we could just experience the SNES/Mega Drive-Genesis days over again.

Ironically, Sega was the first to deliver games as a service.

We had this topic months ago. Xbox One games do not work on Series X before connecting to the internet at least once after installation, because they require an XSX profile that must be downloaded. Series X games can be played always offline off disc. This is not a drm measure.

Microsoft should give an option to download every Xbox One config file at once tho sonyou have them ready at all times. they shouldn't be big, a few MiB each, if even that.

Only one I have is Tron: Evolution on Steam. Disney decided to shutdown the server used for the DRM so the game no longer works. There's apparently a workaround but I've never got it to work. Some of the games released using GFWL can be a little finicky too but can generally be salvaged. Never had an issue with console games as of yet

So IGN posted an inaccurate statement from Modern Vintage Gamer, which is a game developer.

So a game maker didnt know this?

Yes, I would appreciate if they could integrate the config files into future os updates or offer them as a separate download, ideally also to PC, to make Xbox One games on Series consoles future proof. But as long as Xbox One can play them always offline and Series X can play Series X games always offline, I am less concerned than with PS5 (because of the clock issue). Even though I am a PS5 owner currently and not an XSX owner. However, the longevity issue with the PS5 is actually a reason I want to sell my PS5, when I am done with the games I currently have.

They could just remove DRM years from now when it wont hurt them as bad financially. I wouldn't change it this second just because some neckbeards are bitching.

I literally forgot to deactivate my copy of Office 2019 on my Mac and they refused to reactivate it like they used to do in the past in these situations but we’re happy to try to sell me another copy or a 365 subscription. Everything they do they HAVE to have hyper control over the product and treat you like a thief. It’s not like Office is even the best suite anymore as excel is bested by Google Sheets, word is dead last to just about anything on the market that does word processing, and PowerPoint is a joke to the Apple equivalent.

Some of these game preservationists remind me of dooms day preppers.

....except "end of the world" to them means you can't play Halo Infinite.....one day.

Man it’s not like we’re slowing moving towards a you’ll own nothing and be happy future. There’s even washer/dryer setups coming you can’t own, you just lease monthly but you’re still on the hook for detergent, energy and cleaning. It’s just so weird growing up people pushed back against shitty companies doing these type of things and now somehow you’re the crazy one for NOT wanting to give up control. This hail corporate attitude that’s creeped itself into the public concise is beyond weird to me and I don’t feel like pointing that out makes anyone crazy.
