The Mortal Kombat series has always been a phenomenon. There are legions of dedicated fans out there that absolutely love it, and even more that can't stand it. But more often than not, it seems to boil down to the one simple argument: Are you a Street Fighter guy or a Mortal Kombat guy? Yet despite the fact that I, myself, have always been a Ryu and Ken supporter, the last couple of fighters from Midway have really gotten my attention. Especially this one: which is so huge and intimidating, that it will take even the most dedicated franchise fans out there quite some time to vanquish it.

Don't be misled by the overly positive score below, though. Because despite the fact that I enjoyed the game thoroughly, was impressed by its replayablity and depth, and felt that it has the best online fighting model of any other game on the market until Dead or Alive Ultimate comes out, it's still not recommended for everyone. Japanese 2D fighting elitists or hardcore Tekken addicts may not be able to accept it -- and that's fine, personal tastes are personal tastes.

As for me, I found Mortal Kombat: Deception to be a great diversion from the usual fighting game template. So while it may not be as complex or responsive as a number of other 3D (or even 2D) fighters out there, it's a hell of a lot of fun whether you stink at it or not. And sometimes at the end of the day, that's all you need to matter.

Yes, but not playable. Everyone from the past games are in the Konquest mode.

As for actual fightable characters, the boss is a giant lizard monster, but there's no 4 armed Shokan characters.

Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, Baraka, Mileena, Jade, Noob-Smoke, Sindel, Nightwolf, Kabal, Ermac, Tanya, Bo' Rai Cho, Kenshi and Li Mei are the returning characters.

Thanks for the info. Damn, no goro. I've always wanted a playable version of him. I'll still buy it though.

Noob Smoke? eh?

Did they change the name from Noob Saibot to Noob Smoke because Tobias isn't involved with MK anymore?

They are actually two people. When you switch fighting style, you switch from noob to smoke

Yeah, supposedly as the story goes, Noob Saibot found Smoke's robot body, reactivated and reprogrammed it, and now he controls him.

Odd thing about Liu Kang is that when he was first shown in the Hotaru bio a few months ago, he looked normal, like he always did, but before that Boon & Co. had said he was gonna be a ghost and/or a zombie. Now they show his character select pic and he looks like something out of the original Evil Dead.

Can't wait till monday.

No, despite what a lot of people claim. John's been gone since 1999 and there's been 3 games since then that have used the name "Noob Saibot".

Sonya and Cage were beaten in MKDA and are now in prison.

Yeah, her and Kano were chained up in the Kahn's Arena stage.

Most of the good guys(Kitana, Kung Lao, Cage, Sonya....) that were in MKDA are now either captured or killed. The Deadly Alliance actually won in MKDA. It's cool because since all the big name good guys are out, they have a reason to bring in less used characters like Sindel, Nightwolf and Kabal.

The Prison stage in MKD is really cool. There's a bunch of cells and it randomly picks different old school MK characters to be in them. Like you can see Kahn, Fujin, Jarek, Reptile, ect. locked up.

Mortal Kombat is shovelware. always has been, always will be.

Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive is where its at :)

Goro's playable in MK1(gameboy), MK Trilogy(all versions except N64), MK4(all home versions) and MK Gold.

There are no MK4 home versions. The closest thing is MK Gold on Dreamcast.

MK 1-3 were decent. And I really don't see how people can rate DOA so high and MKD so low. I'm a Tekken fan personally, but I don't see what makes DOA so much better than MKD or vice versa. They seem about the same in gameplay depth and that's all that matters in a fighting game.

FYI... The interactive stages in MKD are superior to the stages in DOA3, and what I've seen of Ultimate, although the review build hasn't come in for Ultimate so I can't be 100% sure on that.

That's his alt costume. One is a Zombie, the other is basically normal.

I am so hyped!

Zombie Liu Kang will be awesome.

Don't get too hyped, he'll be the last person you unlock, and you won't get him within the first week you have the game unless you play nonstop... guaranteed.

MK4 was on PSOne, N64, and PC. I have a review of the N64 version up on this very site.

I stand corrected, by apologies... it appears it was on GBC as well.

The game in my N64 right now says otherwise.

You have to forgive DrDogg. I know I also tried as hard as I could to erase the memory of Mortal Krap 4 from my mind as well. :P

MK got good with Deadly Alliance, and even now, it still has a ways to go before it can compete with the big boys. That said, MK DA was fun fighter despite its flaws, and I'm looking forward to the sequel this week.

Are you guys aware that the Premium Pack is the only way to get the arcade perfect version of MK1? Didn't know that until I saw the ad in the paper today for it. I just assumed it was unlockable in the game and not actually a perk for the collector's edition. Went and pre-ordered today.

yes I took back def jam FFNY, and fully paid for the premium edition. got the last availible reserve also (I guess the collectors editions are limited)

I'm getting both the special editions for Xbox and PS2. Scorpion cover for Xbox.

I hope the history of MK1 vid is not the same one from MKDA(which was weak). I also hope the bios are not the same ones from IGN, although those were decent.

I'm going to check out the bios and MK1 before playing MKD. I have a feeling MK1 won't really be arcade perfect.

i, too, have that feeling. thats my biggest concern however, and ill also be giving MK1 a thorough examination before messing with deception

Is it out today? I preordered it andnever got a clear date on when it was coming in.

Same here, but I'm hopeful for MK1, if the MAT2 videos of it before they decided to bundle it with Deception were any indication, it looked arcade perfect and moved smoothly, although it will be hard to know until we have the controller in our hands.
