IGN: New IP for Revolution

Quizzed on the subject, Nintendo's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, promised that Revolution owners would not have to worry about the same fate. "Wait for Revolution," she said. "At least one new franchise. Brand new."

Further pressed on whether this new franchise would debut with the launch of the Revolution, Kaplan said yes.

Ninteno should give out tidbits like this every other week or so until they're ready to show the revolution. This is E3 though and most likely there won't be many leaks later. :|

So, what kind of game do you think it is? I'm hoping for something epic and huge, like a 40-50 hour RPG that rivals Final Fantasy. Or a game with gameplay as awesome as Pikmin, I wouldn't mind that either. :p
 
I'm not satisfied to be honest.

One new franchise at launch? There should be at least two, or even three.

The fact remains that the best time to launch a new franchise is within the launch window.

I really, really hated Pikmin. But after playing Pikmin 2, it's a hard game to put down because the time limit no longer hurts the game.

Hopefully Nintendo doesn't rush this one out the door.

Kaplan said at least one new franchise. I'm guessing 2 though only 1 might make it to launch.
 
I think what Nintendo's problem is that when people associate Nintendo games with Nintendo systems, they get kiddy looking stuff.

You look at games like Pikmin and Animal Crossing and the same problem plagues them both - the image factor.

I'd love to see Nintendo get away from that problem entirely. That's why I'm happy with games like Polarium and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess or non-games like Electroplankton and Nintendogs.

They don't look like Nintendo games, and that's a good thing.
 
If Mario 128 isn't a launch title for Revolution...I just don't know what else to say.

If it were, Mario 128, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Brothers Online, plus new IP=Nintendo redeemed.

If it was stated that Miyamoto was in charge of this new IP, I would feel a little better about it. Haven't read the article yet though.

In the press conference, Iwata said that he was overseeing it.

Isn't this the new Miyamoto franchise? Not to say that his ideas are not noteworthy, but is this the project she's referring to. And yes, there was a plethora of new IPs being offered for the PS3. (come back to me rolleyes)

I really doubt Miyamoto would be behind it. The last time they said he was making a new game, it was actually someone else behind it (Pikmin). It's nearing a decade since he's directed a game.

EDIT: Actually, they credited Miyamoto with Nintendogs. I'm not sure he had much to do with that either.

I dont think they see this as a problem. Animal Crossing has almost broken 1 million copies in america. They're not going to see fault with that. Nintendo's image plagues older Nintendo fans, Nintendo is just making money off of it.

i hope he's directing it. He needs to be DIRECTING games.
 
i know what new game is about

it is about RATS.


and i know how Miyamoto thought of making game about rats, one day he was doing staff in his basement and he saw a rat wondering around, THERE it came to his mind that his next game will be about rats and their lives. then he spent his next five months with rats studying their daily life. :lol

i actually think he was probably more involved in pikmin than your average producer. i'm betting he came up with the whole idea behind the gameplay and the whole concept for the game, then let somebody else oversee the making of it while he occasionally looked over their shoulder... Thats about enough to deserve a co-directing credit IMO, even if he didn't get one. i'm betting kojimw will have about the same role on mgs4 and they are crediting him as a director for it.

also, on nintendogs, why not? He has to be doing something, and supposedly he's been working on DS games pretty heavily for a while. also, the titles success, quality and style seem to match his track record.. it's not like this guy is suddenly not able to direct good games. It wasn't that long ago that he made mario 64 and reinvented platformers. People are still copying that.

it almost seems like it's fashionable to think myamoto is just a figure head now as far as the actual meat and potatoes of game design.. i bet thats probably innacurate.
 
I remember miyamoto said in an interview once, when asked about 'mature' games, that the younger staff at EAD would like to create games like that. It would be awesome to see EAD make an action game like Devi May Cry or Ninja Gaiden.

What worries me though is miyamoto's influence. He said he doesn't like turn-based RPGs for example, and how many of those did nintendo release? Exactly. We'll see. One year to go. :lol

Well at the start of the GC's lifetime, he was said to be working on about 30 games at any given time. Now, since the transition to Iwata, it's been cut down to 7 or so. So maybe he does have a little more input nowadays. Him creating a brand new game at this point is really something I can't imagine.

That's semantics, the producer is behind the director and in the case of Pikmin Miyamoto was more involved in that title than perhaps any other since Mario 64. He's done his best work as Producer; Super Mario Bros. 3, Link to the Past, Yoshi's Island. He hasn't really directed a game in twenty years and admits he is far more suited to the producer role.

If they had all four games at once, i would become very poor.

1 new ip is cool...any more than that would be gravy.
 
Cramming a launch day like that would just be a waste (the 4 titles thing). These aren't the days when a company had to fill their launch lineup themselves, with maybe a couple of third party titles as well, to get a marketable number of games.

Without his intervention, MP wouldn't be what it became. Pikmin/2 were fresh original IPs, his touch are on all Zeldas from the beginning. Ridicule him all you want, he deserves our respect.

Didn't Iwata or Yamauchi state that they were nudging him back into the director's chair? I assumed at the time that they said this, (about a year ago iirc), it was going to be either the next Zelda or the next Mario; but with LoZ:TP being Aonuma's, is, if this is correct, the next Mario being Miyamoto-directed? Maybe it's this new franchise; I dunno.
 
They should bring back Roll-a-Rama for the Rev launch. If it really does have Gyro control then a graphically pumped version of Roll-a-Rama would be a perfect launch title.
 
i can't remember where i read it, but a year ago Iwata said that Miyamoto would be demoted (well, maybe not demoted, but relocated), and would be directing again.

it was around the time they announced IRD was back. a bit after they announced the Tokyo studio.

I remember the quote but I don't think they specifically said directing again though. What they meant was that before he had taken on a role where he had overseen somewhere between 25 to 30 games at a time but he felt that stretched him too thin so now he is taking on a more conservative number of games around 4 or 5 at a time but none of them I think are in the directors position. Would be nice though.

I also remember reading somewhere that Nintendo announced they would be concentrating on creating new IP's for GameCube...

mp was heavily overseen by miyamoto as i recall. this was obvious from the interviews around at the time. he was concerned about the transition into 3d.

i think miyamoto understands videogames better than anyone. i can't wait to see his new game.
