IGN: Nintendo Has 'No Real Need' for New Franchises, Veteran Says, and Can Just 'Pick Whatever' Existing Series Fits New Gameplay

The problem isn't the franchises themselves, the problem is that nintendo games have had all of the challenge taken out of their games which leaves them feeling braindead easy/boring. And we're still getting games like fire emblem/zelda etc that have terrible writing which frankly is ridiculous nowadays when writing is becoming a crucial part of gaming. I'd argue that nintendo games have gotten less complex and interesting for me personally as the years have went by and it's made me not as interested in any of their franchises.

Yet they still create them. That's what I love about them. They don't rest on their laurels. We a due for them to make another RPG franchise...........from Monolith Soft.
Not an RPG, but this post reminds me that we never got Monolith Soft's fresh new Wii IP in the USA: Disaster: Day of Crisis.

I'd like to see them do a Neil Druckmann-style highly cinematic, story driven game with Mario as the protagonist and Luigi as the main villain.

I agree since the only interesting new series and upcoming new series are Routine, Stellar Blade, Tides of Annihilation.

Still lots of awesome existing series that have lay dormant for far too long that they could bring out like a Starcraft 3, Half Life, Starcraft Ghost, System Shock 3, Ratchet and Clank, Dishonored 3. Infamous, Tiberium Wars 5, Red Alert 4, among many others.

And of course there's a lot of great confirmed ones from existing franchises coming like Resident Evil, GTA VI, Witcher 4, Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5, Dawn of War 4.

Basically they could do sequels or remakes for existing franchises so lots of choices there.

Don't really see much need of new franchises because it's extremely hard for one to start off good these days.

and that why they keep get away with it, nostalgia is a hell of a drug, they ll ride on Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Metroid to the end of days.

fun note, their last big new IP was Xenoblade 15 years ago.

Edit: i forgot about Splatoon, Splatoon was their last big new IP 10 years ago, thanks @poodaddy

Ring Fit Adventure did huge numbers.

Makes sense.

The idea of new ip is also overrated. New gameplay experiences is what matters, you can do that with any existing IP. Meanwhile many new IP are just retreading the same experiences.

Sry to all

Nintendo latest new IP was Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, keep them coming Nintendo.

Lol. Well do we count that ? Really though, the small ips can become huge. Animal Crossing on the N64 sold about 210k. It was only released in Japan. The Gamecube version of the same game with some updates sold 2 to 3 million and has gone on to be one of Nintendos biggest franchises.

I think it can work for a decent amount of game ideas, and it's been working in keeping their IP relevant...I just think enough game ideas would hit harder when wrapped entirely around a new IP's world, characters and aesthetic vs. reusing the same IP to fit the mechanics.

I mean, it's true, but it's also good they don't shy away from actually making new ones, like Splatoon or ARMS, even if they'd probably sell way more if they had an already big IP name attached to them instead (especially ARMS, so underrated).
