IGN:New Scalebound Details. Klobb: "Has potential to be Game of all Time"

Platinum Combat

+

Open World?
Online Multiplayer?
Decent Story?
"Emergent" Gameplay?

I don't know what are MS' first party strengths at all.

I'd like the first and third added into the Platinum formula though, here's hoping the AAA budget and collaboration will lead to it.

Typcial AAA PR. It was a pretty ridiculous statement but at least it's giving a good sounding game more attention.

Scalebound needs all the attention it can get. But it's all for a good cause. They know Kamiya makes freaking spectacular games that don't sell. Clearly, he is trying to remedy that. But I think he is speaking more as a fan of Kamiya than anything. And for that, I don't blame him.

Shocking news: Kamiya's going to make an awesome game.

It's pretty obvious that it's going to be great given his track record. GOAT is obviously hyperbole, though (especially since none of his games are even in contention imo)

haha, yeah, we were talking about this in the TIC podcast thread.
He was very excited for it, and also said that crackdown development was going extremely well....
Reiterated that this is big year for rare, and that they have some surprise spring games unanounced (probably nothing too big), and Oh, I think he said Ori was Feb-March game.

I don't think I've liked a single platinum game. When they were clover I liked Viewtiful Joe but that's it. So maybe?

the point isn't that at all. the point is MS guys shouldn't be spouting out ridiculous stuff like that.

I don't doubt the game will be incredible BTW. but I don't think anyone is questioning that here.

Alright. What I'm gathering now is that mS seemingly just has bad PR or PR reps.

I think it's going to look exactly like bayonetta (character action game) but with the scale of the game increasing and decreasing to drastic effect, thus 'scalebound'

That's my guess

What is game of all time even meant to mean? I mean I'm fairly certain it is a game and will fall somewhere in the spectrum of all of time.

pretty different thing from a Sony official like Yoshida or Boyes saying before we know any gameplay features that the entire product will be the "game of all time"
Which is different from Ken Lobb talking in a podcast with fans. It's not like he is screaming in a PR release, he just seems generally excited and got a carried away a bit in a casual podcast.

It was a genuine conversation with fan podcast. Not like he had press conference and said this

Sure, but it's still major hyperbole. I mean, Lobb is a designer/director, so I understand that his hype might be more genuine than a figurehead like, say, Reggie Fils-Aime (who I personally can't stand in interviews), but it's still a really over-the-top statement.

When it comes out and reviews hit this whole thread will be eating crow. Cant wait

So you think it will be the highest reviewed game ever? It would pretty much have to be to be the "game of all time."

That's the corner you get backed into with quotes like this. Then, if the game does underwhelm, next time Lobb tries to hype something up, he gets laughed at with quotes like "yeah yeah just like Scalebound"

I just don't understand what you gain with quotes like this, Lobb is setting up huge expectations that aren't really fair to Platinum....

I'm waiting for that one time a PR guy is gonna say: "Oh yeah, that game is totally gonna suck." And everybody goes: "Well... shit..."

not sure where I said yoshida or boyes would need to scream it in a PR statement for it to be a silly thing to say but OK! neat!

"Game of all time?" Sounds like something Sony would say back in 2006. Anyways its a silly thing to say because for some, GOAT can be something from past gens so yea.

What does Platninum do well?

Make games that dont sell.

What does Microsoft do well?

Kill great studios.

Uh oh.

Nice XD

but seriously...

He means that it will be a great platinum game (as usual), but that they are helping them make it a lot more accessible to a mass western audience (hence more sales).

Also interesting to see that Platinum (he said) is "very self aware" about how their games get these great reviews everywhere, and people who play them love it, but that they never sell well.

That is why they went to MS to pitch the game (and yes it was them going to MS, not the other way around) which he was really delighted to have happen, because (he said) it has been a lifelong dream of his to work with Platinum.

What a surprise, people overreacting

100% agree. Many aren't familiar with Platinum's games due to the reasons you've stated. If this statement will make some of them interested in Scalebound then there's nothing wrong with it -- all for a good cause (as you've said).

Yeah, Lobb is such a dick. Can't believe he would say such shit. Gamers should get really mad since we all know it really isn't going to be the game of all time. How could someone even say that on a podcast having a conversation with a fan?

This is sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious.

pretty different thing from a Sony official like Yoshida or Boyes saying before we know any gameplay features that the entire product will be the "game of all time"

Because when you want to let everyone know that your game is going to be the best of all time, you do so on a podcast with less than 2,000 subscribers that averages a few hundred views per video.

The context of this entire interview is lost when you extract quotes from it. It's very much an interview about Lobb's experiences within the industry, and a lot of questions are answered from a more personalized perspective.

Truly how unfortunate. Such statements are begging for critical backlash if the game fails to meet such an unreasonable target.

If you are going to get cocky and point towards the outfield seats, you better bring it like Babe Ruth. Given that Platinum is the developer, I would love to see them hit it out of the park but this is the last thing they need hanging over their development cycle.
