IGN PSP Hands-On Playtest

"Prior to the free play time, Sony Computer Entertainment leader Ken Kutaragi stated that the price and release date for the system would not be revealed until after the Tokyo Game Show. Apparently, SCE wants to get the reaction of people and investors following their TGS experience with the system, and will then announce launch specifics."

So is that pricing we've heard BS or not?

The system is certainly much cooler than our cell phones get when we play even simple 2D games.
What kind of shitty cell phones do you have over there? 0_o

Really nice impressions ahead.

Amazingly, the system is very quiet -- there doesn't seem to be anything moving around to cool it off inside.
Tits.

More or less, if for no other reason than is isn't from Sony themselves.

Yay, so the price hasn't been decided on.

Wow I've never though about heat related issues when using a portable. I hope it doesn't get noticably warm when you use it, I hate that.

ony Computer Entertainment gave members of the press a preview of the Tokyo Game Show PSP experience, readying five playable PSP units and one copy each of Minna no Golf Portable, Dynasty Warriors (Shin Sangokumusou), Shin Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid and Dokodemo Issho.

Ridge Racer. :D

Because there were no AC adapter plugs coming out of the system, it seems reasonable to assume that Sony had all the demos running through battery power. We were at the trial event when it started and left an hour later; the battery meter in the menu screen remained at three notches throughout. You can read into that however you like. SCE is expected to reveal more details on battery life at a later date (and if they don't, you can be sure we'll put the final Japanese retail version through hell and back to determine how long the battery lasts).
:D

After reading those reviews... PSP +1. I would even give my first born for it!... seriously...

I don't mind paying 300$US IF IT COMES WITH A GAME/Accessories. But hell I HATE when stupid people keep saying it costs 300$ when Sony has not made any annonucement of any sort as to what the final price will be.

How do they keep devices like the PSP, PocketPCs etc., cool?

I've always wondered that.

The ability to watch porn on the go with new smaller technology is always a + for the pocket PC market...

ohh cool... as in cold?... that's a good question :D

well there goes the argument that the battery dies after two hours.

i might pony up the cash and import this thing if the battery last for over five or six hours.

ditto

RRV looks no better than the RR PSP video that you can get on their site. Actually, I'd be willing to bet image quality of the RR PSP would leave RRV buried under the thick layer of dust.

All Pocket PCs that I've used do get a little warm after some time of continuous use.

September 21, 2004 - In a Q&A session following a press conference held today in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment chief Ken Kutaragi restated that the PSP system will see Japanese release before the end of the calendar year

The PSP is still due to release this year in Japan? I thought is was moved to April?

About the battery. Not sure how much you all know about batteries, but assuming they use voltage to measure the charge left in the battery, the most common way to do it, relationship between voltage and charge is not linear. It sort of stays about the same and then drops off quickly as it empties. Notice that most cell phones stay at about 3 or 4 bars and then once they get to two bars drop very quickly down to 1 bar and then off comparatively. I think the 2 hour mark was probably lower than reasonable anyway, but we still may see much weaker battery performance than an SP.

How the hell can you tell based on this washed out video?

Not necessarily, the onscreen battery meter could be a fake ;)

That's not what I've seen happening on my Pocket PC and cellphone. There's definitely no quick drop-off or anything like that on their battery meters. As a matter of fact the SE phone that I have seems to stay quite long on each and every battery drop it makes. It becomes quite obvious when the battery is almost out, but it keeps the low setting displayed for a very long time. Sony's photo camera that uses their 'info lithium' battery, displays the remaining charge time in minutes, and again, I didn't notice any quick drop-offs.

That has actually crossed my mind, because in that hands on update they say that the user interface is still very incomplete and only shows that battery meter.

anecdotal counterpoint, my sanyo phone does exactly what KingV described. lots of time on 3, then from 2 to 0 it's like nothing.

I wouldn't consider that comparison to be... relevant.

Fair enough, but the devices I'm referring to, (phone and the camera) are both made by Sony, use Sony battery and are fairly recently developed.

My Sony cordless phones had the worst batteries-after three months, it had to be back on the hook except when calling or the phone would go dead from no juice. My Sony camcorder battery is pretty good. So the jury is out whether the PSP battery is any good. At $299, rumored price, it sure better be damn good:10+ hours of game playing.

Is the battery pack swappable? That would solve the issue as far as I'm concerned, i.e. if you can just take along an extra battery.
