IGN Review Dead or Alive 4

9.0/10

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/678/678269p1.html

DOA4 is a move in the right direction for the series in the long run, even if, in the short run, the changes to the counter system, blocks, throws and the ground game are a little annoying at first. The fighting is now deeper and more sophisticated, and while it may not seem so at first, there is a solution to every attack. For instance, if you see the warthog driving toward you in Gambler's Paradise, you can jump it. You can still counter nearly everything, and the ground game and the use of the environment is much greater. DOA4's online mode is also a tremendous improvement, giving the series another layer of play that should take off and breathe new life into the series. The game is also incredibly funny, too. The breadth of game endings is vast, and some are incredibly hilarious (Zack and Kasumi for starters).

...but before you get your hopes too high remember this is the same IGN channel/editors that gave Jade Empire a 9.9...ruh-oh.

No it isn't. That was xbox.ign.com, this is xbox360.ign.com.

My comment may be worthless, but so was yours.

Our review goes up Thurs/Fri midnight.

I haven't played it... Milky did our review.

I can't wait to get into this game on 360. Next week, people!

My JP version should ship today, so maybe we could give a US vs Europe match a try next week. I'd like to see how the game plays with such a difficult online setup.

The Gamestop I pre-ordered it said "Tomorrow". As in Thursday.

I'm going to be stupid and believe his news. I'm ridiculously amped for this ;____;

Considering some people have it already... I would say that you are not stupid to believe them at all.

So a 5 from gamepro and a 9 from IGN eh? it would almost be no better to have no reviews at all. For the record tekken 5 deserves a 7/10 which is a step up from the 5 /10 I'd give the 4th one.

I'm predicting atleast an 8.9 from gamespot , milky will give it a 9.5 and EGM will give it 7,8,8.5. It's gamerankings score will be 8X% after 30 days with atleast 2 reviews that give it like a 3/5 or something.

Agreed, 9.5+ from 1up, easy.

EDIT: That is if the semi-obvious fact that Milky = James Mielke is indeed correct... >.>

The actual online fighting is technically sound and impressive. Graphically, the game doesn't suffer in any noticeable way. The game looks and plays the same. Nintety-nine percent of my fights were totally lag free.
:D

Online is the only reason I would consider buying a fighting game, so this is good news.

99% of the fights are lag free

Wow. So what the hell is Sega's problem again?

I haven't played it, but can anyone comment on how Ultimate played online? In terms of lag etc.

DOAU was a bit worse.

Id say about 70% of the fights were lag free.

Lag on DOAU was minimal. Remember that Team Ninja went and wrote their own code for online as well.

Will I be able to have my own soundtrack while i'm fighting?

psst. it doesn't matter what 360 game is in your system, you can play custom soundtracks on every single one.

I found DOAU to be nigh unplayable on Xbox Live, and I have a pretty good DSL connection (3-4mbit down, 640kbit up)...

I played against a high ranked player, and all he did was do the same move over and over against me, which was hard to counter because of the lag. Once I got used to the lag and started countering, he'd switch to another move. Once I started countering everything, he disconnected. :(

1up doesn't use fractional points... Whatever score he gives will be a whole number.

From the IGN review....

For starters, the speed with which each of the characters moves is incredible. This game blazes away at 60 FPS with nary a hitch, and the art team worked diligently to create smooth animations that blend between every move, fall, throw, and taunt. With the powerful Xbox 360 grinding away in the background, Itagaki and team have created a fighter that will satisfy your twitchy split-second demands without any issues. Oh yeah, and DOA4 loads in four seconds. Yes, it will load in four seconds from any mode of play.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect the talent of Itagaki and Team Ninja.

It is not physically possible to have pings as fast as necessary for virtua fighter. Who knows what their definition of "lag free" is.

It's all about client prediction and their implementation of it.

Actually for a "small" country like France and with a very good DSL connection (Fastpath) it's possible. For example from my home I'm 14 ms away from a friend who lives in southern France (600 km away).
In Japan where lots of people have an optic fiber connection, this time should be even better.
sefskillz: How would you predict when someone will react to someone's else action? Games like VF4 have opportunity windows of like 3-4 frames, meaning 48 or 64 ms for a 60 fps game. There is no way you can predict what someone will do in a fighting game, it's all about the time it takes for the information to go from one player's system to the other one. Of course you can handle the lag one way or another, but it won't play the same as the game normally would.

im reading the review right now and the first image caption says

"You too can capture screens and save them with as much blur effect as your want." what is wrong with ign? seriously

Yep. Why don't the VF fans want online? Wh can't they at least give it a try? Every thread I see the same thing, "online would suck," "online can't handle it."

Let Sega AM2 make it online, then judge from there.

Probably the format length. I know if I had to write multi-page reviews over something as shallow on a descriptive level as a fighting game, I'd resort to that too. :p

well thats the thing actually, its not the fans telling am2 that online will suck (even though we believe it will) am2 has flat out said it just wont work in a way that they are happy with.

I look forward to playing the next VF. Haven't played the previous ones since earlier sega days but it looks interesting.

I'm still unsure about this new DOA though. Hopefully they focus more on the fighting mechanics than the ummm...other stuff this time around.

Tekken has always been a subpar fighting game IMO. Yes they can make it look flashier, but until the mechanics undergo major changes it will continue to be a button-mashers dream come true. Meh.

Comical. I guess they abandoned the whole "critical eye on the next generation" angle right in time for DOA4. They have bitched about this and that game not being next gen or innovative enough, and then they turn around and give this game a high score for simply fixing what's been broken all along.

Uh, no it's not. Jade Empire was reviewed by someone else.

I wonder how many DOA4 ads are up on IGN sites today.

I don't see the contoversy.... if you fix something, shouldn't it be better?
