A mid grade RE-4 clone. Can't say I'm surprised.

Yeah this is the game that ripped off RE4's 3rd-person laser aiming system.
I just can't get over the fact that people continue to call this game an RE4 clone. Cold Fear has been around longer than RE4 and was created by many of the people responsible for the series cloned by the original Resident Evil 1. Give these guys a break. It's not like they had access to the near infinite budget that RE4 most likely had. It IS possible to have a great time with something that isn't exactly AAA material, ya know...
Heck, if people actually played just 5 minutes of this game, they'd see how little it shares with RE4. The controls, environment, progression, and presentation are NOTHING like RE4. It did NOT rip off of the RE4 aiming system. If anything, you could claim that it is more like Splinter Cell. I mean, the movement system is full 3D analog and you can freely walk and aim when your gun is drawn. It's a good system and should be used...

Can we stop the what game ripped off what game talk and focus on how good/bad Cold Fear is? I'd appreciate impressions from people who played it.

I didn't really like this system. The view would not always fix behind the character in one try, sometimes you'll have to push the button several times before it works. Also, because the game isn't always in this view, the controls and switching between the two view point felt very confusing and unaccurate. I was ambushed by enemies several times because the system just didn't work right.

Walking around the ship felt excellent, though. The rain doesn't look as nice as MGS2, as expected, but it is a lot more intense. The ship rocks all of the place, water splashes up all over the deck and camera, shadows from most objects dance all over the place with the ship movement, etc. It's really beautiful to behold. Like I said, it controls wonderfully. Sadly, I really didn't get far enough to say anything else. I'll probably rent it or even buy it down the road for cheaper. Sadly, they picked a REALLY bad time to release this. Next week is one of the greatest gaming weeks we've had in a long time, and Cold Fear is just going to have to wait...
I really feel bad for Dark Works, though. They've been working on this for a while, they kinda created the genre, and now people are claiming they copied RE4 and their game is being released right before a major "game storm".

Well, like I said, I did not have the chance to play for more than 5 minutes. From that short period of time, however, I found the controls to be excellent. They weren't as precise as RE4 nor as satisfying (not many games are), but they did offer more freedom.

I'll pick up the Xbox version today. I assume that's the best version.

Played a bit of the Xbox version, made it up to the Upper Deck.
Graphics are just OK, kind of bland although you are on a Russian tanker so I suppose it's apropos. Rain effects are decent and the swaying of the boat in the opening sequence is pretty well done. Fire doesn't look so hot though, so to speak.
The control is over the shoulder ala Splinter Cell but you don't have free camera look with right analog until you get into aiming mode by pulling the right trigger. So you can walk around like this if you wish.
Camera's swung around on me wildly a few times.
Voice acting I don't care much about so the B-grade voices and cheesy dialogue don't bother me a bit.
No big scares so far, a couple Russian sailors tried to pop me but no biggie.
Overall I was kind of getting Carrier flashbacks, if anyone remembers that game.
