IGN reviews the "new" Commodore 64

Definitely on my radar, but initial ship-dates were missed so I've been a little gunshy on putting an order in.

C64 is a great hobbyist platform still. There are some insane things being done in the demo scene and there are amazingly a steady stream of new games for it after all these years.

Its a genuinely fun thing to work on as emulation is basically perfect these days and although architecturally its incredibly simple, the various tricks and undocumented hardware features keep it interesting.

Long live the C64. Best home computer ever!

The Commodore 64 Ultimate is an incredible retro revival of the world's all-time best selling personal computer. Its modern additions are all positive and don't take anything away from the genuineness of its 8-bit experience. This is the piece of hardware to which all future retro-revivals should aspire.

I am really tempted to put an order in before price goes up next year. It just seems a blast to try and mess around with something like this with clear hardware limitations.

And retro vibes are out of this world!

Nostalgia Nerd did a great video on this thing. I have no nostalgia for Commodore but its really cool that this exists

I don't have a lot of nostalgia for the Commodore 64... I have a cousin who use to own one back in the day, and he had a full monitor, disk drives and everything, and I remember playing things like Hot Wheels and other game son it. I knew a few random people with them. Never owned one myself. I had a Coco 3 when I was a kid.

If there is any one youtuber who I would like to see a review from, I suppose it is the Nostalgia Nerd, since he is pretty nitpick-y about these C64 machines... and Ashens.

I am always on the fence with these retro inspired micro computers as most are just ARM SBC's in a retro case. But this is FPGA, which is pretty cool. It looks like it gives a pretty authentic experience with some advanced features. I like the idea that it can emulate BBS software through an interest connection.

I know nostalgia has a powerful pull in relation to movies and music, but there's only so far I want to go back when it comes to computer graphics. I couldn't think of anything worse than actually paying to play those crude old games again, even if Last Ninja 2 is one of the GOATED (and the best version) on the C64.

My original C64 still works today, yet I kind of want this new version too as they really did a great job with it. And mine certainly can't last forever.

Commodore is back with a brand new, but familiar computer - The Commodore 64 Ultimate is a modern FPGA-based recreation of the original C64 from 1982. It builds on years of work by Gideon Zweijtzer and turns it into a complete, officially branded machine. In today's episode we do a full breakdown of the hardware and cover every aspect of the product.
