IGN reviews Unreal Championship 2

Nice...I'm thinking about picking it up. I played the demo and liked it. But I have Halo 2 and Chaos Theory that I play on XBL right now. Do I need another Live game at the moment?

I think I'll get it. Only a few XBox Live games left, and this sounds really interesting how they tailored it to the system. Sounds nice and meaty too, solid single, good multi, lots o' maps n' modes. Good stuff.

I couldn't get into the demo too much, so I'm not sure I'll get it.

It'll be on sale at CC next week for $40 I believe, so that might persuade me to give it a try.

What were some qualms with the demo? Either way, I think I'll just take the chance.

On that note, is it just me or does no one ever put any real effort into a quality demo experience anymore?

The first UC was published by Atari, this one by Midway so there is hope. UC2 also has Mortal Kombat character(s) from Midway's storied franchise.

Downloading vid review...

I thought the demo was pretty good. I mean I didn't spend time learning the nuances such as how to wall jump properly, or utilize the various special powers. But I DID feel badass reflecting rockets back at fools with my staff.

I hate the Unreal and Quake games. I don't understand how people enjoy playing FPS at that speed. Halo is like the perfect speed for a FPS.

Not an FPS this time around, they really seemed to have changed it up something fierce.

As for the typical games, it's something you just adapt to.

Should be the best Xbox Live title yet. I think offline it would completely suck though.

The UT series is great fun online and off, and UC 2 looks to be no different. (In fact, the recent CGW article about the new Unreal title in development mentions that statistically, more people play the games offline than on-.) This is because all the games in the series have had excellent bot support. Now if only some other companies would follow their example and add bots to their games , too...

UT bots rule the school.

Every video of this game looks terrible. The animation is awkward, the camera is jittery, and the game just doesn't look like it involves any skill.

The video review made my eyes water

EDIT: I take some of it back. Some events look like they require SSB:M like timing. I think that's cool.

i REALLY liked Unreal Championship, and thought the demo of UC2 blew... so i guess people who hated the first might like this...

Is it because you were expecting a FPS, by any chance? UC2 takes the game in a completely different direction. The game is a 3rd person deathmatch game with more of an emphasis on the melee combat than the ranged weapons. You can play in a first person view when using guns, but it's not recommended, since you need the third person view to see more of your surroundings and use all the various acrobatic movements to dodge attacks. I also love how you can reflect bullets back at your opponent, and actually BLOCK, making the game feel much less like a button mash fest when you are in a room with several other players, unlike the chaos that results in games like Jedi Academy.

You can also see the MK influence in the game. It's not just Raiden; you can also perform fatality moves on opponents, and you can also switch the announcer to the MK voice. :)

Hope no one minds a repost of my demo impressions in order to give more buzz to this great looking game. Since this was just the demo, I expect the game to even more polished.

I tried this the past two nights on live and against bots. The complaint about it not feeling like a UT game is on the mark but it was designed that way. If you watch the developer video on the demo disk they specificaslly address this. Paraphrasing; "The first UC was a straight port and not much effort went into it to make it console friendly and that was a mistake. Because UC2 is built from the ground up for the Xbox we took many liberties to make the game the ultimate console expereince." Also, technically it is not a true FPS. From listening to him I got the feeling that Epic expects most players to use 3rd person all of the time though (paraphrasing) "everyone will play to their own style". If you look through the options all of the weapons are fully customizable so when they're equipped you automatically go to 3rd or 1st person.

The complaint about being the game being unbalanced is premature. The goods are in the characters, the weapons and the adrenaline abilities. There are so many possible permutations you as the player need to find what works and in what situation. The adrenaline abilities are sweet. I was using the female character and she had 6 abilities among which were speed (this is gonna be killer in capture the flag), nimble (jump where you normally can't), wraith (I have no idea but it looked way cool), etheral (your opponent I believe knows you are in this mode but you appear to them slightly off from your actual position), vampire (I believe as you damge other players you channel their damge into your health) and siphon (I believe you drain health from other players, a non persistent state). Some abilities are shared while most are unique to the character.

The controller interface is well done. The abilities are easily accessible with no more than two presses of X and a press of LT, RT or A. Each press of X denotes a set of abilities.

A - Jump
B - Melee switch / Melee power attack
Y - Switch weapon
X - Adrenaline menu
LA Click - Jump (very useful not having to press A)
RA Click - Target (does not aim for you, just keeps the player in view)
RT - Fire
LT - Secondary Attack

The graphics are gorgeous. The levels are purdy and the character models are solid. The framerate, considering this is a Unreal game running on old hardware is excellent.

The matches I played were all lag free except for one. This game is shipping with an amazing 40 maps plus content download. Don't have XBL, no sweat the games I played against the bots were good and the AI is very good having multiple (the same as UT) difficulty levels. The demo had a few mutators and I'm sure the final version will have more. I was on the fence about UC2 because of how shitty UC was. After the demo this has moved into must get status.

lol sold.

This was one of the best demos I've ever played, if not the best.

I loved deflecting attacks. I remember playing rocket ping-pong with someone; one of us would fire a rocket and then we'd bounce it back and forth until someone messed up. You can even deflect sniper fire (and get headshots).

And 40 maps is just insane. Puts just about every other mp game like this to shame.

My lack of interest is due to being a little burnt out with online shooter/fighting. But I can't see how one could deny the quality of the package. The demo was outstanding and the content looks really deep. Though the gameplay was different (not in a bad way, just different) it's the only console version I've tried that approaches the awesomness of the PC game.

I'll probably fold and get it.

FireZ, I've been looking at info on this game all weekend, and haven't read anything about a deflect limit in the final version. Or did you mean the number of times in a row you can deflect attacks?

Keep in mind that you can only play certain maps in certain game type modes and also with certain amounts of players, however.

There are some new modes in the game that look to be very fun, too. One of them has you running around the map with the sole purpose of slaughtering more (helpless) NPCs than your opponents, and another is a "grab the ball and bring it to the goal" type match; gives the game some more variety.

You can check Gamefaqs for more info, since the game was "released" (I.E. YARRRRRRRR) a few days ago. Apparently the 1P mode only features a story mode with Anubis, and while short, it's got a lot of cinema scenes. You can use all the other characters in story, and there's also challenge modes too, which make you use a specific character to complete what can be a very hard task to overcome in game (such as starting a level with only a minute or two left with no frags, and your opponent has 10 frags, which you must beat)

Anyway, can't wait to pick this game up Tuesday; it's all paid up (or else Doom 3 would be getting the boot)and ready for me to pick up! It's very different from the likes of Halo 2 and Splinter Cell CT; definitely deserves a spot in any Xbox LIVE player's collection. :)

UC2 is the freshest most exciting Unreal game to come out since Unreal Tournament in '99.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.

And you are the one thinking that Pariah looks great in the IGN videos...
I don't think I'll ever be able to agree with you on anything where gaming is concerned, at this point it's almost as if you would just do it on purpose :D

It seems that you need to charge the adrenaline meter to deflect, in the demo you can deflect anytime you want (some people abused of this on the demo even with the timing, I can tell for my own experience),
I'm very confident with the pop. of this game the original is still played and the demo has a very decent number of games at peak hours.
and yes some maps are exclusive of the game mode (ex: you cant use the facing worlds like map for deatmatch or use praxis or remanent for CTF) but is still a lot of maps.

Doesn't look like it involves any skill? As opposed to what? I take it that you haven't played the demo? UC2 will be awesome on Live.
