IGN: Splatoon's lack of voice chat is "cheap and lazy"

I don't even know what to say about Nintendo's insistence on shunning voice chat. It's baffling to me that they would not want friends and family being able to actually speak to each other while playing a game. Whenever I play a Nintendo game online, I quickly remember it's the loneliest gaming experience ever and then stop. The entire idea of online is communication and they just don't get it I guess.

What is Swapnote.

Since Splatoon mixes players from all over the world in one server (without lag, surprisingly), it would be a mess. Everyone that tried the demo yesterday saw many Japanese names despite being from EU or US for example. Splatoon is frantic and fast, and voice chat with strangers would be terrible. I rarely use voice chat in MP games with strangers, there's just no point unless it's a comp setting like CS:GO. Maybe it's more of a US thing, but Splatoon's random shuffled matchmaking system would not benefit from voice chat.

There's no excuse for not adding voice chat amongst friends though, however that feature gets unlocked a few weeks after release so..... maybe there is some hope? Probably not, though.

Nobody, didn't you hear? Everyone on the internet is 12 which is rather convenient for Nintendo fans wouldn't ya say

No, that's not it. Everyone on the internet has a smartphone now and can call people if they want to talk (that's why no one used Wii Speak). Nintendo investors have been trying to tell Iwata this for years and he's just got the memo.

Just like when people bitched about entering 30 digit friend codes, Nintendo just replaced the numbers with a user defined NNID without sorting out the actual account system.

Stuff just gets lost in translation.

They probably should have voice chat, but I really hate voice chat and disable it whenever possible. I've spent too many games of Counter Strike listening to dudes who sound exactly the same thinking they're special ops' strategists or whining because they suck. It's exactly the same in Halo public matches, with 12 year olds cursing up a storm whenever they get sniped.

Voice chat definitely has major benefits, but I absolutely hate listening to morons when I play online. I'm not gonna miss it at all.

They might also enforce the no chat thing to make sure most players actually aren't co-operating in a hardcore manner. Compare it to running into a clan in the cod games. They're usually a bunch of try-hards exploiting the most annoying tactics and co-operating in such a way that it results in a spawntrap or unwinnable situation where the other team just has an awful time or lots of ragequits. As this game is trying to promote itself as newcomer friendly game, the voice ban not only prevents toxic people, it prevents toxic gameplay as well.

This also shines true in other parts of the gameplay, like not always having to engage in fights cause you should be covering ground and forcing the use of the gamepad so players can always see where they're most needed at any time. All the design decisions, including no voice chat, are there to add up that specific game experience they're trying to create. I can only commend them for trying to create what they want to create instead just add things because they can or because it's 2015 or blablabla.

I feel the same. The game design is intuitive enough (maybe not the initial gyro controls) that voice chat isn't necessary. In fact, I would argue the bad outweighs the good as voice chat isn't needed to overcome poor design flaws or games that have large, slow paced gameplay that requires communication (CS).

The gameplay is fast paced and chaotic. Constant orders going out by someone as the map changes will not be fun and make the game more of a chore than what its supposed to be... a game.

Read what I quoted and tell me what I should have thought?

Dont go thinking I dislike all voice chat in games and approve of nintendos decision just cause I told you of the few times I had a bad voice chat experience in a game.
Everyone who plays online goes has gone through that many times.

I won't lie and say I know fully how tech works but would voice chat in any way affect how smoothly online play can be? I seriously don't know o3o

I wouldn't think it would cause that much of a difference in play.

It should definitely be included. good on IGN. Online multiplayer games benefit immensely from voicechat when playing with friends.

Without in game voice chat, people are gonna have to use Skype or whatever

The entire idea of online is communication and they just don't get it I guess.

Not for me. I love the online in MK8 and Smash because I can play against real people but not have to hear or talk to them. It's the best of both worlds!

I don't know if cheap and lazy is how I would describe it, but it's absolutely bad game design. It's crazy that in 2015 there is an online game without voice chat. Even crazier that I've seen people defend it not being in the game. It should be a basic feature at this point. There is no excuse for it being absent.

I still can't believe Nintendo actually has the gall to think its okay to release a multiplayer focused game without the most basic and standard of features like voice chat and fucking playing in a party with friends.

I have never read a legitimate argument against including voice chat. The people that seem to be against it don't seem to know what "options" are. That's where the "cheap and lazy" really applies. Too cheap to get a headset (which doesn't make sense on the Wii U, 'cause the the Gamepad has a built-in mic) and too lazy to turn off voice chat if they don't want to use it.

in my experience, the only time someone was talking in AW was to just talk shit or have everyone hear their music. No promoting tactics or anything of the sort.

AW is on consoles with proper online and actual party systems, so people tend to be silent as they're in their own groups of friends talking while in a match.

I will probably be in said parties while playing Splatoon because otherwise the whole thing is way too silent and disconnected feeling.

I wouldn't think it would cause that much of a difference in play.

They'd have to have a different server for it, probably, and it wouldn't necessarily affect the direct connection but would likely end up with bandwidth limitations on the user end, depending on the internet provider/speeds/bandwidths.

The bigger issue with all-in voice chat would be that Splatoon doesn't have a regional split for its online multiplayer. So any given match would be drawing from across the globe with a high probability of a bunch of non-yourlanguage speakers. Obviously this isn't an issue with friend lobbies, though.

You're ignoring people with IRL friends and family that want to talk to each other while playing the game. The game telling them "you do your own voice chat solution because we ain't giving you any" is a pretty terrible idea, pure and simple. That doesn't realy have anything to do with "toxic gaming communities" or whatever, it's about simple features for people who need them.

I've no clue why people pretend online voice chat is exclusively about randoms. The reason why nobody uses voice chat with randoms on the PS4/XB1 is because of party chat, whereas Splatoon won't even have party chat.

You're right, I am ignoring those people because my argument is against universal public voice chat. I don't give a rats ass how friends are talking to each other and what implementations Nintendo has made, if any. I talk to my friend's via Skype or Facetime because the sound quality is superb and better than what any console (except Xbox One maybe) can give me.

Ever heard of a mute button? There's really no excuse; if you want to be a hermit that's cool but some of us like communicating with other humans.

I'm glad Nintendo has never (and will never due to their kid friendly image despite it being mostly kids who use voice chat) enabled voice chat with randoms. Its annoying hearing other people talk. Especially in a game like Splatoon where I want to focus fully on the game instead of being distracted by voices. (And listen to awesome music/sound effects)

Who chats on a console anymore?

The only reason I play games online is to play with my friends who now live in other states. We buy the games we plan on playing online together. We basically use it like we would a phone, to catch up and chat like once every few weeks. In fact, we're about to do it right now.

But my friends don't have a wii u, only I do.

Screw voice chat. 85% of the time it's just a bunch of stupid prepubescent kids. And that's on Xbox and Playstation. God forbid you voice chat on a system made for kids.

I don't mind this. But with friends it should be an option

It blows my mind that it blows other people's minds that a game could not have voice chat in 2015. Sure, it may be "cheap and lazy" but why bother with something as small as this if it may hinder the online experience, community-wise and connection-wise. If you're one of those saying you aren't gonna buy the game because of this, you likely weren't gonna buy the game anyway.

But, I agree they should add it when they add in party matches (which is the real travesty). I've also never seen any game that has all voice disabled as default and I'm not sure why that is. Also, pretty much every MOBA has no in-game voice-chat and they are arguably the biggest team basted multiplayer games today. Valve and Riot have commented on why many times I believe.

I don't think they leave out voice chat because of laziness.
And while I strongly prefer the option to be available, I am SICK of creeps and ill-mannered people who cannot complete a sentence without a certain word start with the letter "F". That's the solo reason I have never enabled microphone in MH3U.

I wouldn't think it would cause that much of a difference in play.

That was the official reason they gave for only having it between matches with friends in Smash. I dunno if it's actually accurate or not

Friends only. Every one happy

Interesting. Would suck for me and my crappy internet then haha

Perhaps it might be probable that they patch it in once the friend lobbies update is up in like August I think?

There's voice chat in MH3U o.o ??!?

Whoa, they're actually not allowing that in 2015?

Yep.

- You can join matches with friends at launch, but teams are randomized. Matchmaking with friends where you can have a specific Team A v.s. Team B, and pick a specific mode/map won't be out until the August update.

3 months for an update that adds the most basic features.

Yes they are, but the feature gets unlocked at most a few weeks after launch.

Yeah try 3 months.

I don't own a Wii U, so no dog in this fight, but they should really include party chat as an option at the very least. I'm agreed that chatting with randoms almost never works out (Destiny is one of the only games I've ever played that randoms are decent to talk with), and for the most part I mute any random that pipes up... that being said, if I'm playing with friends, I'd want to party chat and either strategize, or just shoot the shart while we play.

In this day and age, it should at least be an option. Nintendo makes some great games, but they really seem clueless at times when it comes to modern gaming.

It's astounding that the lack of voice chat options is being defended as if it's inclusion would be a detriment. It would can easily be an option. And if you don't like it then turn it off, but don't pretend not having voice chat in any kind of team game is some great boon to the game's quality or isn't actually limiting in any way whatsoever.

Really? I'm pretty sure Dota 2 has voice chat =/
