IGN: Splatoon's lack of voice chat is "cheap and lazy"

I think all of the guys talking in their teamseak or on skype would have a laugh about it. The random matchmaking people would get mad because they couldn't finish their thorough analysis of why one of the teams snipers likes putting things in his ass.

You know what, I did not expect this type of discussion. But for the heck of it, let's say the game magically temporarily bans people for using alternative voice chat to communicate with teammates. What do you think of this now?

You should probably ask him what he meant by it.

Second guessing him, one of the first rules of design is to question assumptions, and given all of the posts in this topic about it being 2015 and every competitive game must have built in voice chat I would imagine he is pointing out that that is an assumption that has evidence against it being true.
And people have already pointed how that for it to be true, you have to ignore a lot of factors about PC gaming. He didn't do a very good job at making his point.

Then he shouldn't have tweeted it without explanation, because honestly, some of his suggestions without context look hilariously dumb and he should've realized it / explained it more. The indie cred you referenced means nothing due to that. I'm unfamiliar with Journey, would agree with LoL, and raise a brow and wonder what he's smoking with Hearthstone.

Progressing strategies with randoms? That happens?

As you said with regulars you can easily use teamspeak or other forms of vc.

IF they have a mic I ask them in the lobby, and tell them if u get rodeed call it out, or u see a pilot running on rooftop somewhere call it out, or if they rush/ flank call it.

It let's the team know. Or if they put down arc mines they let you know where, because if u shoot or they go off near you they do damage to u as well.

So yea, regardless if I have regular team mates or randoms communication is key in LTS.

When was the last time any of you anti-voice chat guys played a competitive shooter. The community isn't nearly as toxic as it was 2/3 years ago, mainly due to party chat. I played Advanced Warfare for about 3 months, and have a couple of hundred hours in Destiny (a lot of which is in crucible) and literally haven't been insulted once, over a mic or over a message. In fact the only message I received in that time was this one

The shooter communities aren't anywhere near as bad as people in this thread are making out. The moba community on the other hand are awful (at least in Dota).

There is a lot of heat in this thread. But I am really on team It-should-have-chat-and-there-is-no-good-reason-it-doesn't.

I mean I am already getting it day one, and it's a great game. The truth is I don't mind personally, I don't use VC at all really. But the reason is that I pretty much stick to Nintendo consoles! I never really play online with friends. 1. Because I don't have many friends with Wii U, and 2. Even if I did, Nintendo makes it really hard.

It isn't even a system thing. CoD Ghosts for Wii U which I play quite often, has VC implemented. On top of that, when entering an online match I can bring up a list of currently on line friends and message/invite to game etc. I can also add people I was currently playing with to my Wii U friends list.

And also I have never had obsenities screamed at me in CoD on Wii U.

If it's about stranger danger, then make it friends only chat. If it's about obsenities, then make it unlockable by 10p card payment or something. The ONLY reason I can thimnk that it might be worth it would be performance, and in games like smash where it is based on twitchy nanosecond movements I understand. But I don't think this is the case considering so many other games on the system have voice chat.

Wii U doesn't have party chat, does it?

No

While I myself wouldn't use voicechat, I do think it's something that should be included. Having it included but off as the default I think would be the best solution.

More of a case I think of moba communities being that much worse. Not that shooter communities have gotten better. I think Destiny is a different story because that's more of an RPG with shooting. I've always felt that game attracted and ultimately maintained a different type of player overall then the player that sticks with Call of Duty. You're not the first person I've seen talk about how non-toxic the Destiny environment is and I believe that but mainly because how different the game is to your standard FPS.

Crucible is really no different than any other FPS. But like I mentioned I played Advanced Warfer for a few months, and I've played the previous CoD games a TON. More than Is like to admit probably, as well as a few months of BF4 when I first got my PS4. The community is definitely nowhere near as bad as it was, and the MOBA community is worse that the FPS community ever was, but that's probably because it's easier to talk shit over a keyboard than it is a headset, and because they're way more reliant on teamwork than any console FPS.

Lack or limitations of voice chat on popular games has actively kept me away from the Wii U. The only time I get to play anymore I choose to spend playing with buddies, and we do it to shoot the shit and play some games. Mario Kart or Smash would have been excellent, but we can't talk to eachother, that limits 50% of the reason I play games. Throw Splatoon in that bucket now. It's lame, it would be a lot of fun and would probably be my go-to system, but not with the lack of chat support. "Won't someone think of the children" is a crappy defense, make it optional / family controlled.

Is it a Nintendo policy to not have voice chat due to it's family friendly image?

Would be a weird policy if so.

Im wondering what is the Nintendo standard for family friendly?

Does Bayonetta,Call of Duty, and Sniper Elite within that standard? If so why would voice chat be (at least OS party chat), as they all can be moderated by some type of parental consent/control.

If they dont fall into that standard, is this Nintendo removing itself from those type of games/features?

Its been in several of their games, even on the DS/3DS, all of them family games. They all required you to have each other on your friends list though.

What IGN is asking for is a free for all voicechat which as far as i know they have never done.

There already was a family friendly shooter that aimed for a younger audience than the usual shooter crowd.

And it had voice chat!

And one of the first comments somebody made in this thread was about that:

Voice chat is by far (by far by far) the by far shittiest thing about PvZ Garden Warfare. By far. It almost makes the game unplayable just out of pure infuriation when you're loading a map and someone is spamming crap on the mic and you can't mute it because you're not in yet.

Whoever decided to let chat come in before you're even loaded into the game screwed up bad.

I'm okay with any game not prioritizing it after that.

And one of the first comments somebody made in this thread was about that:

It never bothered me while playing. I probably wouldn't have had anywhere near as much fun with the game if it wasn't for voice chat. Not being able to talk to the people you play with in team based multiplayer just doesn't sound very fun.

Does not change that his argument was shitty.

Sorry dude, that one guy's experiences prove voice chat is nothing but a burden. I mean, just imagine the horror of having to include an option to mute before a load screen - or even waiting until the game begins to let players talk!

Interestingly there's a great new preview of Splatoon, which mentions this game:

http://communityvoices.post-gazette...oon-impresses-on-wii-u-in-weekend-server-test

It’s not easy to reimagine today’s multiplayer shooters. “Titanfall” for Xbox One attempted to, as did “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare,” but those releases still contained foundations similar to the “Call of Duty” franchise. “Splatoon” is truly unique in that the goal of each match is to paint or ink the majority of the map rather than killing the opposing team.
I never imagined “Splatoon” would be as fun as it turned out being. Even in defeat, I was happy to be a part of each round. This is a rare case where fun factor takes precedence over competition in a competitive shooter, and it will be even better when we can jump in rounds with friends.

I'm not so sure that PvZ:GW is a good example of a family friendly shooter, given how the whole game was designed to get people to spend money on microtransactions, many of which are consumable.

Anyway, everyone's just going in circles now. The pro-voice chat group isn't going to convince the anti-voice chat group and vice versa. I don't see Nintendo backpedaling on this issue either.

Thats nice to hear, i still remember pretty much the moment i said i was done, some asshat spent five minutes cussing out this kid who was trying to learn how to play NS, and wasted a bunch of points on a form he knew nothing about. And it didnt even matter, that match wouldnt have been won anyways

Monster hunter also has a fantastic community, well, back when we could talk. But honestly, i dont really miss it, enough to loade up 3u again because mh4 is pretty damn awesome.

But really, its hard to believe thats the case when all you see are knee jerk reactions from the people who very clearly would be the ones on the mic. Especially for random matches.

Its not really needed in the same way, the situational visual feed is comprehensive, in real time, and each player can be pinged.

And i really dont see it happening until or even if splatoon gets its own 'for glory' mode.

And its just not that big of a deal.

Play the game not the features.

Team "It doesn't need voice chat at all, but might as well have it to appease the people who insist it does."

Also team, "No, Mario Party can't be done online because it has all the problems of both turn-based and real-time games and that doesn't work well over the internet."

Huh? The game gives away free maps, and you unlock new characters/items by purchasing packs of cards with in game currency earned while playing the game. If anything it's a super family friendly game, and usually I'm hearing the voices of younger children playing the game.

Have you spent any time with the game?

Also team, "No, Mario Party can't be done online because it has all the problems of both turn-based and real-time games and that doesn't work well over the internet."

I have a hard time believing this is a thing.

i also have a hard time believing anyone actually finds mario party or even worse wii u party enjoyable.

Wii party u was my free mk8 game because i already had everything else, i dont see how replacing miis with mario will be any better, and i want my money back.

I play Mario Party 1, 2 and 3 online sometimes and it's always a blast. Crazy how that series still hasn't gone online and the same people defending a lack of voice chat in Splatoon are surely the same people advocating a lack of online multiplayer in Mario Party.

A damn shame.

I have a hard time believing this is a thing.

Turn-Based games allow you to take your turn and then step away from, or even turn off, the game until everyone else has had their turn. Game can span days/weeks/months, but that's not an issue since no one has to be online at the same time.

Real-Time games are generally brief sessions and even if they're long they can continue even if some of the players leave.

Mario Party requires everyone to be around to take their turn to progress, but doesn't allow you to leave because a mini-game that requires active participation will happen not only once everyone has had their turn, but can also happen randomly at any time.

If anyone stops playing then the game cannot progress.

It's like playing civilization except you have to sit your ass down and WATCH every turn, just in case.

If you schedule out a time for you and your friends to get together and play, it can work... until someone has to leave. Odds are most of your games will remain incomplete. And playing with randos is right out.

And the format change makes it much worse for it as now mid-turn minigames are frequent instead of just an ocassional thing.

It sure as hell stopped me from playing. Having to mute people separately every game was such a pain in the ass.

Fuck that shit.

Waaaaa this thread still going?

Get over it people, it aint gonna happen, and you will buy it anyway!

;)

We'll see...
I probably won't buy it, have to check how well it sells,
and how well the online community does.

Seems the devs only want to cater to people new to the online environment.

Maybe. Depends if the community is still going after I beat P&D Z.

In action though, no voice chat does not bother me. However, I have zero connection with my teammates because of it.
Plus have to see if single player is worth anything. Won't probably invest much time in MP.

The irony is that Nintendo's misguided attempt at "protecting the kids" is just going to lead little Johnny to pursue voice chat through other means, and Skype is a far more dangerous place than Nintendo's own ecosystem.

It depends. Being able to social with other people is what is going to keep me coming back to the game.

Full priced games with a heavy focus on the online component are worth it if I think I'm going to really sink a lot of time into them.
And I'm worried about my desire to keep coming back to a game where everyone is silent.

Nintendo doesn't care, as long as it doesn't happen on their product.

Pretty interesting. It doesn't bother me too much, but I'd love to see the feature added in. Everyone would be pleased then. Can turn it on or leave it off. I think it'd be cool to have for friend's lobby, at the very least.

Well, that maybe just ust me and probably a certain portion of the people around here, but online game, as example cod, well, i just get tired of em. Last one i play till i bleed was Black Ops. Gave time to Black Ops 2 , MW3, Ghost, and just bought AW cheap for the single player online. Trying some local games with bots, and u lnow what, im just tired of the same thing.

Meanwhile, Splatton seem to bring something new. I just hope it wont be another Titanfall, forgotten after 3 month. But there seem to be lots of stuff to unlock so its a day one for me, chat included or not.

Hoping people will not skip this game because only of the voive chat, because the game itself is pretty amazing imo, and it was just a demo.

MH3U had built in voice chat with the gamepad, you could also type to a chat window via the gamepad or plug in a USB keyboard.

I think the real reason behind this is so that splatoon can keep their E rating.

That's what they said about Mario Kart 8. And I still bought it because, whatever, it's Mario Kart, I already know I'll love it. I still do. Play it regularly with the fam.

And I actually got two of my buddies to buy the system and game too! (well one of them bought the system for 3D World, but whatever)

And we've played online like three times together. And they've since both sold the game, probably no longer than a month or two since they bought it.

And the reason?

If you guessed 'they don't like to keep their phone tied up for the next hour just to play games with one another, and the alternative might as well be playing with randoms, which is one hundred percent less entertaining and engaging than playing with good friends in general', well... bingo

for what it's worth I'll probably get them to buy Splatoon too and if anything they'll probably keep the game despite lack of voice chat. Why? because we love playing as a team, together, engaging in meaningful interactions in the game so that we perform better together than we ever would alone. For example, I fucking hated Destiny and my post history will corroborate this. And yet, I've got a level thirty Warlock, and a Titan in the late teens, and I know they'd both be 32 if I still owned a PS4. Because playing together and triumphing as a team of friends makes even shit games pretty fun to play, sometimes. And Splatoon is far from a shit game as far as I can tell. so we'll use Skype, or TS on our respective laptops and tablets, and we'll do that shit up anyways. (in august lols)
