IGN's Top 100 Games 2005

Really? Runs fine in Mozilla for me, and my computer's kinda suck.

Anyway, only #100-91 are posted yet.

I love these threads. People bitching and whining that their favorite game either didn't make the list, or isn't rated high enough, and others bitching that certain games that, because they didn't like it, don't deserve to be even on the list in the first place.

Then we get the posts about how unoriginal the lists are to begin with. Then that snowballs into writer bias, site bias, and Microsoft paying people off.

Time to sit back and enjoy the festivities... :D

Man, that Reader's Choice one was pretty crap. It was basically a bunch of new games, and Resident Evil 4 won the best ever. But RE4 was released 2 weeks ago, so of course they are going to vote for the game that just came out.

Use the grease monkey script. It makes IGN useable.

This game was genius. It was so ahead of its time, it's not funny. It was full-3d in a way that had not been seen before. A contemporary game, for example, was Wolfenstein 3D.

Compare:

i never understood the TOP 100 games, there are too many opinions that differ, they should do top 100 games every 5 years and there should be no ranking with them. Every year they do these lists and every year they get worse and worse.

So...

Am I the only one that clicked it assuming the #1 was posted and hoping to see Zelda/Halo/GTA as #1 and ready to flame away if Zelda/Halo/GTA wasn't #1?

:lol

Herzog Zwei should be WAY lower.

Zelda OoT or FF7?

Though Super Mario Bros 3 is my real choice.
It definitely won't be SMB 3. That was like number 32 in their old list.

It'll probably be RE4, Halo 2, OoT, or Super Mario Bros (hey, it was #1 last time!)

Why all the hate on Mafia? It's one of my personal Top 10 PC games of all time (The PS2/Xbox games are decidedly inferior, so if you're basing your hate on that, realize the PC game is the only acceptable version). It has a fantastic story and immersive atmosphere, with great music. The whole game world is very cohesive. I think most people who've completed it to the end will agree it's a fantastic game. I'm hoping we'll see a sequel to it someday.

Mafia on PC is a great game but I heard that the console ports were butchered. I liked it more than any GTA I have played, also hope they make a sequel to it someday.

I'm curious - are the people bitching about Mafia basing their opinion on the shitty console version?

The PC version was fantastic and it doesn't surprise me to see it on a top-100 list.

Nope - I played the shitty PC version of Mafia. :D

Cars handle and perform like ass, and since driving is probably more than half the game then there's a problem. As a result, getting into chases or just going from place to place is annoying......almost as annoying as the "get pulled over if you go more than 45 mph" system that's in place. The music gets old quickly (did they even record more than an hour?), and you never approach the sense of mayhem or freedom that you got in GTA3. Outside of that the combat/on-foot sections are adequately done, but nothing special.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they were absolutely in love with the game's theme. That's the only thing Mafia has going for it, and why it shouldn't be on any Top 100 lists.

Cars back in the 30's (or whenever Mafia took place) "handled like ass" so it's an attempt to be realistic. I think comparisons to GTA3 are understandable, but misplaced. The game really isn't designed for free-roaming or mayhem. I actually liked the slow cars, etc., because I felt it was authentic to the atmosphere. When you did have a chase you had to actually drive with cars at high speeds because the cars were crap. When you got better cars later, it actually made a huge difference in speed and handling.

I agree the game's theme is the main draw because it really throws right into a 1930's mob scenario. The characters are well written and the story isn't too crazy or over the top. Also the environments are really well-designed and varied. I think if less people approached the game with a "GTA in the 30's" attitude, it would be more appreciated (Not that it isn't appreciated - I think it has a 90% at gamerankings.com). Sorry for the rant, I just really like the game.

I hope Halo 2 is number one so forums the world over explode.

These lists are pretty terrible. I think once you get to the relm of top 50 games, you can't really say one is better than the other. It's all about taste. Taste in genre, plot, characters. It's up to the person.

A list of most influential games is more measurable and reasonable, and probably you would find alot more people agreeing that game A is the most influential, than game A is the best ever.

Realism at the cost of fun and playability is stupid. Particularly when the developers insist on blatantly unrealistic elements (cops with radar guns that can tell if you're doing 5-10 miles over the limit) that also drag down the fun. This hurt the game as much as the poor speed and handling, because it wouldn't have been as interminable had I been able to at least navigate the city at top speed....but you are largely forced to obey the speed limit because outrunning the cops is so difficult with such ass-y cars. With GTA3, Rockstar was smart enough not to sick the police on you for every minor traffic infraction, because they know that's just a fucking hassle. People want realism within reason.

If you approach Mafia as something other than a GTA free-roaming game? Well then it's a mostly an adequate third person shooter where you have to take long boring drives to get to the next level. There's the car chase stuff too, but that again is kind of borked by the low-grade automobiles.

Well, I think the mechanics on both games suck. Sorry, but Tidus>Cloud. I enjoyed the story of FFX more than FFVII

Personally i couldnt care less either way. To me square hasnt made a good game since the SNES. Even then the only square games i have ever liked are Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger.
